Date of Stay: August, 2017 - $30.00
Overall Rating:

We stayed a total of 4 nights at this campground - 2 nights in July on the way to the Kenai, and 2 nights in August on the way back. Nice campground, the staff is friendly and helpful. A bit close to the Parks Highway and the Alaska Railroad, but not really an obtrusive noise. It's a bit of a drive into Anchorage, but the RV parks there are not great. Pretty easy on and off from Parks Highway. We camped at Big Bear Campground & RV Park in a Motorhome.

For a campground in Alaska this was wonderful. The gravel road & sites were level and very well maintained. With grassy areas, some trees and landscaping it had a welcoming feel. Some sites were a little narrower but mostly alright, and ours was very long and wide. Our Dish satellite worked just fine. They provide free Wifi that worked alright most of the time. This place is very convenient to Palmer & Wasilla with Anchorage being a day trip away. My only fault is that it is located right off of Hwy 1 so there was some traffic noise, but it died down at night so sleeping was no problem. We were here 8 nights and would definitely stay here again. We camped at Big Bear Campground & RV Park in a Fifth Wheel.

This is the nicest RV park we found in the Anchorage area. It has generous spaces with lawn in between, clean and roomy restrooms and showers. There's room to walk nearby. We felt the $29-30 price was very fair. Staff were wonderfully friendly and helpful. We liked it so much we came back for a second night later in our trip. We camped at Big Bear Campground & RV Park in a Motorhome.

Nice park. Easy to get to and easy to move around in. The girls up front were very friendly and knowledgeable. They showed us where everything was to see on a nice take away map. There was grass everywhere! It's been so long since we have seen grass in a park! We camped at Big Bear Campground & RV Park in a Motorhome.

We had stayed at Big Bear four years ago when touring Alaska and went back because we liked it then. The staff was very friendly and helpful. The campground sites are set up on concentric circles so if you get on the outside like we did, it was a longer walk to the office, but very peaceful, great grass for our dogs, and lots of room between sites. We highly recommend this campground just north of Anchorage. We camped at Big Bear Campground & RV Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Tips for other Campers:

If you are interested in a day trip through Hatcher Pass, this place is perfect because it is near an entrance and on the highway if you go through and come back from Wasilla. It is also very close to Eklutna Lake which is great for kayaking and hiking...but there are bears there...one in the parking lot when we stopped.

RV parks in Alaska seem to be a lot like the state itself...rough around the edges. In a month travelling here I haven't seen anything I would consider a "class A" park. That being said, this one is as close as we've come. The pads are gravel and at least they don't have a bunch of weeds growing in the middle of them like the last park we went to (although there are a bunch of weeds around the picnic table). The site was relatively level and the line of pull thrus near the office are fairly close together, but not as bad as a lot of places. We had an E & W site, both utilities worked fine. The rest of the sites in the park seem to be more generously spaced. The restroom/shower room is bright and clean although the shower stalls are quite small. I used the handicapped one which was excellent. The shower head was adjustable which is nice and the pressure and hot water were good although a bit hard to regulate. They get high marks for having hair dryers in the washroom though, something I've never seen anywhere else in 16 months on the road except Alaska. I could've lived without the earsplitting loud piped in rock music though. But, whatever. My only complaint was that there are big signs everywhere saying the building is closed from 12 p.m. to 2 p.m., so I went to take my shower at 11:20. Nope. The girl "started early" with the cleaning so I had to wait an hour! There is a very nice looking laundry room that I did not use but it has quite a few machines and several bit folding tables which I really appreciate. It's overpriced at $3 per load, but so where the other places I went so I guess that's the going rip-off rate here in AK. The Tengo wi-fi was free but didn't work the first day. Worked ok day two. Verizon signal was strong. Front desk staff was friendly and professional. All in all, even with a few complaints, the price is right and the value is good, especially for Alaska. We camped at Big Bear Campground & RV Park in a Truck Camper.

We pulled in late. Office made it easy to register and find a spot after hours. Staff was friendly and by far the showers were the cleanest we have seen this week. Sites were spacious and easy to get into. We camped at Big Bear Campground & RV Park in a Travel Trailer.

Park is OK. Navigation is easy. We had a 'super site' which is what you need if you want a long enough site to park the tow vehicle. There is a playground for kids, but they are rabid about having adult supervision--so, what is the point of having the park exactly? They are also a bit nutty about rugs on the grass--wouldn't even allow a small 'welcome' mat (to wipe our feet). Seriously?

No cable available. We camped at Big Bear Campground & RV Park in a Motorhome.

Friendly staff who managed to save me a site at the last minute (for July at least make reservations). Park roads and sites are gravel. Our site was a level pull-through. All utilities worked fine. No cable TV, but plenty of channels off the air. Wi-Fi was the only disappointment. Internet access provided by Tengo and it was terrible. It took forever to log on and it was too slow to work with so I gave up. There was an alternative though. If unable to use the Tengo connection there was an office connection that could be accessed near the office or laundromat. I didn't bother to use it so no comment on effectiveness. We would definitely stay here again if in the area. We camped at Big Bear Campground & RV Park in a Motorhome.

We had a level spot with picnic table and fire ring. Bothers was some traffic noise but it was not too disturbing. The bathrooms were very clean, freshly painted, roomy, and hair dryer included. The woman in the office was very friendly. Would stay here again and would recommend to friends. We camped at Big Bear Campground & RV Park in a Motorhome.

This is an excellent campground we would recommend to anyone staying in the Anchorage area. The campground is extremely well-maintained. The laundromat is the best we have seen in Alaska (we've been here for 8 weeks). The staff is very friendly and helpful. We were here because of truck problems and the staff made sure we had a place to stay even though we kept extending. I really can't say enough about this campground. The buildings, picnic tables, etc. were freshly painted, the grass was mowed and the fire pits were cleaned. Plus, Wasilla is just down the road for shopping, restaurants, etc. We camped at Big Bear Campground & RV Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Very nice office personnel, quiet and close to shopping and sightseeing. The sites are easily accessible and allow a big turn. The dog walk is all grass and is supplied with bags and a dedicated trash can. Even though the park is close to the highway, it's pretty quiet. The park is well maintained and the utilities are easily accessible. The sites are fairly level and have some grass and shade trees. There are two areas of the park, we stayed in the one with the trees away from the playground which had less grass but was closer to the dog walk. We stayed for three night and then came back a week later for another two night. We camped at Big Bear Campground & RV Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Nice park. Some road noise in the full hook up side but OK. Good power and water. Gravel roads like all of Alaska. Could be smoother. Get a few TV stations on your antenna. WiFi is good. Nice helpful people working in the office. 45 min from Anchorage . Nothing bad to say. Would stay again. We camped at Big Bear Campground & RV Park in a Motorhome.

Easy access from Parks Hwy.; quiet, yet close to shopping, restaurants, etc. Good gravel roads and level, gravel sites. Back row "super sites" are long, wide pull-throughs.
