Overall Rating:

We were looking for a CG that would be convenient to the town of Waterton and hiking in Waterton NP. We're self-contained and don't use the facilities except for an occasional shower. We stayed in mid-September in our 8 metre (25 foot) MH. This is a beautiful and nicely situated CG. There are 8 loops and each is different. B and H were closed for renovation. A is mostly full hookups (some are not) with a few pull throughs. C, D, E and F are primitive (no hookups). G is electric only. Although there are views throughout the CG, some of the sites in G are quite near Waterton Lake with gorgeous views. We stayed in loop G. The sites are arrayed in an open grassy field with a few trees. Although there're no trees/shrubbery for privacy, the sites are generously sized. The sites are gravel, most are level. The washroom is clean and heated and includes good-sized, push-button showers with ample hot water and water pressure. There was good ATT coverage while roaming on Rogers or Bell service and good Verizon while roaming on Telus. Our visit was one year after the 2017 Kenow wildfire. Some sections of the park remain closed for clean up, road clearing and hiking trail repair. Roads and trails are re-opening as work is complete and several trails re-opened during our visit. Although the fire burned close to the town of Waterton, the town was spared and shops, restaurants, services, boats cruises were operational. Dump station with water in CG. We camped at Townsite Campground (Parks Canada) in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

The temporary visitor center is in town and quite helpful with up to the minute info on trail conditions/openings. All of the shorter trails near town are open. The Lakeside Trail was open to the US border. The Bertha Lake Trail (with shorter options to a view point and Bertha Falls) was beautiful. The Red Rocks Parkway is partially re-opened to bicycles and hikers.

Overall Rating:

A nice, big rig friendly campground. Quiet except for unsupervised screaming kids and a few loud car stereos. Mostly open sites with little to no shade, but it wasn't a problem in August except for a few very warm days. Sites are nicely spaced, level, with grass between them (with lots of holes from the huge population of ground squirrels). We really enjoyed our stay here even with well over half the trails closed, very smoky days from nearby fires, and a fire evacuation alert which lasted several days. Some very nice to outstanding (crypt lake) hiking trails. We will return, hopefully with some clear days. The entire perimeter of town is about 2.5 miles, so everything is in walking distance. Clear sky for satellite reception. A couple of dings - Sewer hookup is in middle of pad under RV. No dog waste bags. We camped at Townsite Campground (Parks Canada) in a Motorhome.

Overall Rating:

The campground is well-maintained. It could have been cleaner, but given that they were at full capacity, the staff was doing as good a job as possible. Sites are close together, but we lucked out with site A25 at the end of a row, giving us more lawn room. Beauty abounds, with views of the lakes and mountains on all sides. We enjoyed the interpretive programs, especially from the Blackfoot people. Our site had full hookups, which is beyond what we expected in a National Park. Smoke from the nearby wildfires was a factor, but not a deal breaker. We camped at Townsite Campground (Parks Canada) in a Travel Trailer.

Take the boat trip tour of Lower Waterton Lake, it was well worth it. We went to high tea at the Prince of Wales Hotel. Great tea with an incredible view of the lake and mountains.

Overall Rating:

Last year's wildfire destroyed the trees to the west of Waterton Townsite including the Crandall Mountain Campground. The firefighters did a heroic effort protecting the Townsite, campground, and Prince of Wales hotel. Most trails are closed, but the town is open as was this campground and it was about 85% full when we were there and at that time 1st come campers could easily find as spot even late in the afternoon. The Sept 2017 fire has likely discouraged some from visiting, yet the campground remains in an incredibly scenic area. The campsites were immaculate and well spaced and the utilities worked well. The only odd thing is that the sewer inlet is placed nearly dead center in the paved pad meaning you had to park forward or behind to access it possibly requiring an extension to the power cable as in our case. I definitely would stay here again. We camped at Townsite Campground (Parks Canada) in a Travel Trailer.

Packed to the last site (probably pretty common during summer season) it was surprisingly quiet. Either all campers behaved well or the rangers enforced the quiet time. Sites are level and mostly in the open. Little to no privacy here. Hookups in good order. Just the sewer intake was a bit off the usual course - a hole in the middle of the site, covered by a rock. Unfortunately one road and remaining accessible trails were closed due to wildfires so we need to and will come back to explore more of this beautiful NP. We camped at Townsite Campground (Parks Canada) in a Truck Camper.

August 20 & 21 Waterton-Glacier International Peace Park, Canada, Townsite, Waterton Lakes, Site B15, $43, full hookups, This Canadian National Park campground is in walking distance of the town and Cameron Falls. It is big with a number of loops. Mostly open sites in the sun. Bathhouses and showers were nice. Our site was gravel but many of the roads need repair. The ranger show at night about the 150 years of history of this park was an excellent and creative presentation. We were here two nights driving over from St. Mary's Campground in Glacier taking route 89 to Chief Mt. Highway (17) to Waterton Lakes, Canada. The road travels through open range with the mountains in the background. Need your passports and dog records for the border stop but it was quick. So much to do in this town and park. Drive the Akamina Parkway to Cameron Lake, Red Rock Parkway to Red Rock Canyon, visit the Historic Prince of Wales Hotel, shop and eat in the town right on the lake, take a boat ride and see wildlife. Deer, bears and tons of Big Horned Sheep. We saw Big Horned Sheep on both drives right on the road and on the main street in town about a dozen of them, including babies, walked towards us as we were driving in. One bear crossed in front of us as we were coming down the driveway from the hotel. It was a good two days at this park. We camped at Townsite Campground (Parks Canada) in a Motorhome.

Check-in at the registration kiosk was quick and efficient since we had a reservation. At this time of year, the campground is usually full, so make reservations for at least July and August. Campground roads are sealcoat gravel and I noticed a few potholes, but nothing major. This campground has a variety of sites from no services to full hookups. Our site (A25) had full hookups. It was a fairly level, gravel pull-through that included a picnic table on a concrete pad. Electric and water connections were in the middle while the sewer dump was in the middle of the parking pad which made it a challenge to connect. All hookups worked fine, but the sewer needed extra hose and a bit of fiddling to drain properly. For those sites without sewer, there is a dump station on Waterton Avenue close to the mouth of Cameron Creek. The surrounding grass landscape was full of gopher holes made by the hundreds of the resident ground squirrels. We had some great views of the surrounding mountains. Picked up 2 channels on OTA TV, but chose to watch satellite since our site was wide open. There was a notice that the park Wi-Fi was down and nearest open access was a block away near the village playground. There are a series of trails through the campground that go to Cameron Falls, Upper Waterton Lake, and connections to other trails further into the mountains. There is an Interpretive Theatre on the falls trail. The village is walking distance away. We would definitely stay here again for any future visits to the area. We camped at Townsite Campground (Parks Canada) in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

The drives up to Red Rock Canyon and Cameron Lake are worthwhile, but only for smaller rigs. Anything over 30 ft may have some issues with the narrow or windy roads. Cameron Lake has canoe and other boat rentals.

The Prince of Wales Hotel has a lobby lounge view of Upper Waterton Lake that is spectacular. In their restaurant you are served by kilt wearing waiters.

We loved the location of the park. You are steps from Waterton Lakes, in my opinion one of the most beautiful views in the Rockies. You are also a walk or bike ride from the town with many shops and restaurants. A bit longer ride/walk will get you to the park office and Prince of Wales Hotel. The campground is within walking distance to several trail heads. We hiked Bertha Falls trail and it was beautiful. Our complaint about the campground was the roads. Many potholes! Deer in Waterton are plentiful so don't be surprise if you find them wandering the campground. There were movies every night shown about nature and wildlife in the ampitheater. We camped at Townsite Campground (Parks Canada) in a Motorhome.

Park has great views of mountains around the area. Sites are not the most level I ever had but do work. Just outside the park you can see black bears on both sides of the highway. Water and electric worked just fine, however the sewer connection is in the middle of the gravel site and not at all easy to get to. We camped here in a 40' motorhome. We got lucky and were able to make a 5 day reservation, three days before arriving at the end of June. Not a recommended approach, book as far in advance as possible. This is a lovely open campground on the shores of Waterton Lake, surrounded on three sides by mountains. A full service pull-through site is just under $40 per night (Ntl Park entry fees extra). Our site was perfectly level and had commanding views of the surrounding mountains. As I am composing this review, a male deer is grazing on the grass outside my RV window. The picturesque little town of Waterton is less than a 5 minute walk from the campground. If you plan on cooking your own meals, bring food with you as selection is extremely limited and ridiculously overpriced. Diesel is not available in the town. The closest place for diesel is Mountain View about 20k East of the park and the closest full grocery store is in Pincher Creek about 50 km North East of the park. The town has free WiFi throughout and it is possible to connect from the campground. Both Bell and Rogers phones work in the park. We camped at Townsite Campground (Parks Canada) in a Fifth Wheel.

There are plenty of restaurants in town, from a hot dog and fries restaurant to higher end dining.

Visit the Bison compound a few km outside the park gate, admission = free.

The hike up Bear's hump is strenuous, but the views from the summit are spectacular.

Evening walks along the shoreline are a relaxing way to end the day

Love this campground. We had car problems so this was an easy walk into town, marina,etc.. The price includes the online reservation fee. While we could see the other campers there was enough room between sites. We enjoyed the shows at the Interpretive Center and the many paved walkways. Each night after dinner the deer came into the park. The only negative would be the numerous holes made by the ground squirrels. Some are break an ankle size. No fires due to dry conditions. This is a great place to stay. It is adjacent to the town of Waterton and the park has many great hiking and biking trails. The views are spectacular. The sites are spacious with many being pull through for easy access. The washrooms and showers are clean and plentiful. The only negative is that the sewer connection is in the centre of the site, under the RV. This creates a problem if you don't notice this until you are set up.
