This is a no-hookup campground with paved sites, and within walking distance of the museum/visitor's center. The sites are located among large cottonwood trees, so most are well-shaded, and it's cooler here than you would expect because of the shade. If you take one of the tours through the canyon, you will be picked up in the campground and returned to your campsite. I would definitely stay here again. We camped at Cottonwood Campground-Canyon de Chelly National Monument in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

I highly recommend one of the jeep tours through the canyon. You'll see the ruins and petroglyphs up close that you would otherwise see only from a great distance along the rim drives.

This is the campground to stay for visiting Canyon de Chelly. It has a very pleasant feel and seems to be well kept up. The sites are nicely spaced. There is a dump station and water fill. We had reasonably good Verizon voice and data (3G) on extended network. If you want satellite, you will need to choose your site carefully as there are a number of cottonwood trees. There are a number of signs warning about protecting your valuables from theft, but we did not have any problem. There are also signs stating no vendors, but we did have a couple of folks come by and try to sell us items. When we declined to purchase, they readily moved on. We did hear some barking dogs in the distance but it was not a problem. The campground was relatively quiet at night. We camped at Cottonwood Campground-Canyon de Chelly National Monument in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

A tour into the Canyon is a must if you are going to really experience Canyon de Chelly. Just gazing from the rim does not do it justice. There is a fairly good Basha's food store in Chinle.

Been coming here 20 years...I remember the days of free camping and The historic Thunderbird Lodge. Stayed 5 days this trip. All 3 loops open but very few campers (<10/night). Quiet except for local roaming dogs. Trenches not drained thus a mosquito farm is out of control. Could not sit outside in daytime or night. Asked about clearing debris to reduce standing water and let it flow to river, Park Ranger said it wasn't something they "dealt with". With more rain forecasted, this problem will be here for awhile. Too many bullheads in grass to walk dogs off the hot pavement. Overhead branches not trimmed and lost hatch cover from scraping. Weeds hip-high around many sites. Beautiful setting, just lacking care and maintenance. Functional dump site is a plus. We camped at Cottonwood Campground-Canyon de Chelly National Monument in a Fifth Wheel.

Tips for other Campers:

In-Canyon sightseeing requires a guide. Overlooks by car are free. 10% added discount at gift shop at Sacred Canyon Lodge (aka Thunderbird) if you mention campground. New ACE Hardware in Chinle has some RV supplies---but no replacement hatch covers :-(

The campground is operated by the Navajo Nation. There is no National Park discount. Somewhat more than half the sites have shade from big cottonwood trees. These sites are nice. The sites in the sun were all overgrown with weeds to the extent that you couldn't see the picnic tables. The campground has sites to accommodate just about any size rig. There is a single water spigot and a restroom for each loop in the campground. There is no electricity or sewer at the sites. My first night, the Ranger left at 5:00 PM, after which the beggars came around asking for "gas money" and selling rocks on which they had scratched crude copies of the petroglyphs found in the the canyon. My second night the Ranger didn't leave until 8:00 or 9:00 PM and the beggars stayed away.
So, security is pretty inconsistent. I would camp here again, if in the area. We camped at Cottonwood Campground-Canyon de Chelly National Monument in a Travel Trailer.

Tips for other Campers:

Both the north and the south rim roads have a number of overlooks so you can see down into the canyon. There are Navajo concessionaires who conduct half-day and full-day jeep tours and horse tours into the canyon.

Campground not easy to find, signage non-existent. Know your directions beforehand. Easy enough to get around for a big rig. Our 38' fifth wheel fit in a spot with enough room for truck parked sideways in front. Quiet. No spring clean-up had been started and there were picnic tables overgrown with weeds. Third loop wasn't open although it was needed when people came in late and there were no spaces left. Since there are no hook-ups and no clean-up, why keep that loop closed this time of year? Very convenient to Canyon de Chelly. Would stay again. We camped at Cottonwood Campground-Canyon de Chelly National Monument in a Fifth Wheel.

Dry camping only but we were pleasantly surprised at how nice this park is. The roads & sites are paved and have a good amount of space. There are lots of big trees & some grassy areas. There are no amenities but overall the park is really pleasant & quiet. We camped at Cottonwood Campground-Canyon de Chelly National Monument in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

You must book a tour to go into Canyon de Chelly but you can drive the rim and stop at several lookout points for free.

Large, very shaded, bare bones campground. Three large loops, pick your spot, pay at the gate or self-pay via envelope. No hookups, but there is a dump station and potable water in Loop 1. We were concerned with 80-degree temps and no air conditioning, but our RV stayed cool with all the shade. There are restrooms in each loop, but no showers. No grass, mostly weeds and tons of painful goat heads, so we couldn’t walk the dogs much. Not bad for a night or two. We camped at Cottonwood Campground-Canyon de Chelly National Monument in a Fifth Wheel.

For dry camping, this was a great park. In August, it was still very pleasant, due to all the shade trees. There were less than 10 campers in the park the 2 nights we were there (Wed & Thur). We really enjoyed the solitude. Our 30' trailer fit into site 78 without issue; we just had to park the truck at a bit of an angle once we disconnected. Note: be prepared for Navajo vendors coming around after 7 pm to hawk their wares. We camped at Cottonwood Campground-Canyon de Chelly National Monument in a Travel Trailer.

I was leery of staying in a campground with no electricity during the summer in Arizona but it was definitely not a problem. The huge shade trees kept it pleasant. Our 35' motorhome would not have fit in all sites, but we didn't have a problem finding a nice one for the night. It was definitely convenient for touring the park. We got the name of a tour company at the visitor center and had a 3 hour tour into the canyon and we were glad we did. We sure learned a lot about the Navajo lifestyle and saw the canyon up close. We camped at Cottonwood Campground-Canyon de Chelly National Monument in a Motorhome.

This campground appears to have evolved from something less formal. One way loops make it almost impossible to back into some sites. No hookups but a good dump station with water to fill your tank. Great location to start a tour of the south rim overlooks. Pleasant place with lots of mature cottonwoods to provide shade. Short walk to the visitor center. Navaho parks has taken this over and now charges a fee. Cash only, so stop at the ATM before you arrive. We camped at Cottonwood Campground-Canyon de Chelly National Monument in a Motorhome.

We arrived at early afternoon, self registration. Roads and sites are paved and narrow, sites are short, some very short and some longer ones. Most of them are in an odd angle so you have to drive in instead of backing into them. It doesn't really matter as there are no hookups at all. We found a back in site long enough for our 5er and truck with enough space for slide out and awning. Restrooms are toilets only and could have been cleaner. At this time, there was only 1 other RV staying here. It is very nice but could be even way nicer with a little bit of maintenance. It is a perfect place to start your tour of Canyon de Chelly. We would return if again in the area as it is the only campground here and we think it is not worth wile pulling the RV to the other campground which is quite a way into the park. We camped at Cottonwood Campground-Canyon de Chelly National Monument in a Fifth Wheel.

Very nice setting among large cottonwood trees. Can have shade if you want it; we chose a sunny spot for warmth on cold mornings. Restrooms fine and have electricity, but no showers available. Campground roads narrow and confusing. Most sites are back-in. We camped at Cottonwood Campground-Canyon de Chelly National Monument in a Travel Trailer.

Lots of Cottonwoods for shade in middle area; outside has sites for satellite users. Sites are all paved and very level. Some pull throughs and some sites can handle some big rigs. Clean restrooms with no showers. Dump site available and water fill. Great stay to see Canyon de Chelly. Will stay here again. Overall this is a nice campground, but I see signs of neglect. The Navajo Nation took over this campground several years ago. The interior roads and sites have recently been paved. However, this is a confusing campground to navigate in. There are two-way roads that only one RV can safely pass. The bathrooms are old, tired looking, and a bit smelly. The bathrooms did not have paper towels, blow dryers, or soap. There are no showers at this campground. About ¼ of the sites can accommodate large rigs (over 38 feet). Caution must be taken because the interior roads are narrow. Some sites are more level than others. There is one water spigot (without threads) per camp loop. There is a dump station with fresh water. Surprisingly, there was no trash can at the dump station. This campground is dry camping only. We camped at Cottonwood Campground-Canyon de Chelly National Monument in a Fifth Wheel.
