We camped here for 5 days with our motorhome and the only complaint I had was the heat. The temp was between 108-114 for the entire stay. A bit to warm to do much hiking (other than early in the morning which we did) or bike riding. There are a ton of trails in the park and some that connect to other trails outside the park. The hosts and rangers were great with lots information to share. For those camping the sites are big and most in the Quail loop had a good amount of shade but some of the pull through sites were a bit close. We were in #17 and loved it. The bathrooms are clean, and showers are very good with lots of hot water. There is also a wash sink at the bathrooms for dishes if you wanted. We would stay here again if in the area. momdoc. Tips for other Campers:

Much to do around Sedona, which was about 20 miles away. Conchos was a good Mexican restaurant in town.

This is a large state park with lots to do. Hiking trails galore, horse rentals.trails, river and lagoons for kayaking and picnicking and fishing, orienteering course, gift shop, and scads of other places to visit nearby. Sites are well-kept and include a picnic table. Not all are shaded, and some look pretty uneven front to back. Tent areas, too. Very quiet at nite during our visit. We liked it so much, we stayed for 3 days just enjoying the place, although we have explored this area more several times before. Already looking forward to a return visit. Dump station is located near the entrance. No sewers onsite. Great view of Jerome on the hill! We camped at Dead Horse Ranch State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Tips for other Campers:

You could probably spend 10-14 days here in order to see even part of the sights of Sedona, Jerome, Camp Verde, Cottonwood, etc. History, archeology, Indian ways, wineries, old town districts, hundreds of miles of hiking trails, shopping, tours, you name it. Or, you can sit by the water and fish, go birding, and look at the stars at nite!

I stayed in the quail loop site 14, which is the preferred area. everything is on a blacktop, with minimal leveling needed. Site has a picnic table, stand up grill, and a grill over the fire pit. I arrived on Sunday afternoon and left Tuesday morning. Not very busy park during that time. Very quiet, and friendly people neighboring our site. Sites have plenty of space and spread out pretty good. Their were walking trails close by that go all the way around the park, sometimes not very well marked, so you may have to do a little navigating of your own. Plenty of outdoor activities fishing in the lagoons or river and canoeing. When I go back again this will most likely be the place I go back to, it is in the Town of Cottonwood which has all amenities you will need. It is also close to Sedona, Camp Verde, and Jerome. I recommend checking out Tuzigoot National Monument , Fossil Creek, Devils Bridge, and Montezuma Castle National Monument. If you like a little gambling their is Cliff Castle Casino near by. Just a couple of other things be careful on the trails there are deer running around and we also encountered a rattle snake on the road walking back to camp, good idea to always have a large stick when walking out in the wilderness anyway. The only reason I did not give a 10 or a 5 star for Value is because no sewer at site then it would be a 10. I don't give anything for service because I really never dealt with the staff except when they came by my site to check me in and tag my site, they seemed nice. somebody did spill soda or something on the pavement which attracted ants which had to be rinsed away. Have a good time camping. We camped at Dead Horse Ranch State Park in a Travel Trailer.

The location is very nice, located near water and vegetation. Sites are oversized and are offset from your neighbor. The hiking trails are extensive. The largest lagoon at the end is acceptable for kayaks or canoes. Verizon had 4G and Tmobile had 3 bars. Entry into the park and site access was acceptable for big rigs. Aside from not having sewer sites and a ranger who can write tickets for agressige dogs, this park is a not to miss! Conveniently situated outside of Cottonwood and Sedona, it is an oasis in the high desert. All of the sites are spacious, on pavement with grass are well-maintained and include a fire ring and table. Many of the loops are terraced and can accommodate extremely large RVs. The hosts and staff were helpful. With abundant wildlife and trails to hike and cycle throughout the park, Dead Horse Ranch St. Park is a not-to-miss. We camped for 12 nights in a 37' 5th wheel and look forward to a return visit in the future. We camped at Dead Horse Ranch State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

This is a wonderful park. I love the lagoons and their bird life. The hiking trails are good. I like that some trails lead to the river. The horse-riding stable can get smelly and messy when their trails intersect with hiking trails, but overall, I don't have a problem with the idea of giving people a chance to experience horseback riding. Overall, great experience. One annoyance: campground/road signs as you're leaving the park. I drove by my camp site turn-off at least twice because there either were no signs or the signs were practically hidden. Also, improve those showers (in Red-tailed Hawk loop). What a stupid layout! The shower head can't be moved, and it faces the changing area. The water pressure is very high. Turn on the shower, and the water splashes into the changing area, your dry clothes and towel -- unless you think advance to pull the shower curtain closed in front of you. We camped at Dead Horse Ranch State Park in a Travel Trailer.

Tips for other Campers:

Cottonwood, AZ has plenty to offer -- but would the city council and/or tourism bureau please request that Main St. locations put up obvious address numbers on the fronts of their facades? I looked and looked for a certain address but gave up because it was so frustrating.

Great park with lots of hiking and bike trails connected. Large camping pads with privacy. Grass and trees in some locations. Very clean and well kept. Very nice state park. Had to juggle sites in order to stay for full 2 weeks. Every site was large, clean, and level enough. The staff is very friendly and helpful. There are no sewers so had to dump - located near entrance but not difficult to access. Depending on site there are some great views. Easily accessible to everything - groceries, restaurants, etc. Easy drive into Sedona and Jerome. Would definitely stay here again. We camped at Dead Horse Ranch State Park in a Motorhome.

We loved everything about this park! The sites were a good size and level. Utilities were easy to access. Park was well maintained and designed. The check-in was easy and camp hosts were nice and helpful. The access to mountain bike trails can't be beat! The proximity to town was excellent. Can't wait to return! This is a beautiful park, and very large. Plenty of activities, including many trails that are dog friendly. We took our bikes, but it rained 2 of the three days we were there so we didn't ride. Unfortunate because it's a great place to ride a bike. Campground hosts were very friendly and helpful. We camped in Coopers Hawk Loop, which has a nice wood-chip loop trail in the center used as a pet relief walk. Our site, #85, was plenty long for our MH and toad, but it had a incline at the front, so it would be very difficult to keep the toad connected and still get the MH level. We disconnected, so we were able to keep the MH in the flat portion. There's a two-lane dump station near the entrance. This was my first dump station experience, and it was a piece of cake. We camped at Dead Horse Ranch State Park in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

Don't miss Jerome - really cool old town. Historic old Cottonwood is very quaint. The wineries along Page Springs Rd are very nice. Page Springs Cellars has a beautiful deck overlooking Oak Creek. The tasting room at Oak Creek vineyards is very festive, and the wines are good - the Zin was excellent. We bought 4 bottles. Creekside American Bistro in Sedona is dog friendly, and they actually have a separate doggie menu.

We stayed in Quail loop, down nearer to the river. The sites had plenty of room and it was very quiet. The campground got pretty busy but it was still not noisy. The host was available if needed; but not intrusive. I walked the dogs all over the park on trails and roads. Plenty of places to go. Unfortunately, many are not picking up after their pets adjacent to and within the campground. C'mon people!! Clean up after your dogs! We camped at Dead Horse Ranch State Park in a Fifth Wheel.
