Date of Stay: November, 2016 - $10.00
Overall Rating:

I'm rating this campground based on the fact that they only provide electric hook-up at a rate of $10 ($10.75 after tax). Sites #1-4 have a trench that would make it difficult to back a trailer into without possibly hitting the back support legs, but truck campers and vans have been using those sites without problem. The rest of sites #5-10 are flat and level. All sites are back-in but the area for maneuvering is spacious and easy to get the job done, even for newbies. They only offer 30 amp service, but we tripped the breaker and discovered it's only rated for 20 amps. They keep the electric boxes locked so you must arrive while the gift shop (west side) is open from 11am-6pm. There is absolutely no water here other than bottled water you can purchase from the gift shop. They explained it's well water that is really cruddy and they only use it for sanitation needs. The lady that runs the museum gift shop on the east side lives in her trailer behind the building and even she hauls her water in from the town of Holbrook. We filled our water and emptied the sewer tanks before we arrived, so we enjoyed resting here for a week. We wanted to see the supermoon occurring 11/14/16 and the night skies here are wide, open, and bright - perfect spot for astronomical events.

We work online so Verizon service is important - we got 3 strong bars of LTE (50-60% strength) without needing our WE boost. 3 bars of steady voice signal. I also noticed among the wifi networks that someone was using T-mobile as their hotspot, so apparently this one works here too.

Across the street (east side), you can camp for free. There are several teepees built from plywood that anyone with a sleeping bag can use for free - score one for the traveling car campers! We camped at Crystal Forest Gift Shop Campground in a Fifth Wheel.

Tips for other Campers:

Nearest town 18 miles away is Holbrook, AZ. They have one grocery store - Safeway. I also called the KOA campground there and they let you fill your RV water tanks for $5. Post office requires you to sign on a list before they will accept General Delivery mail for you, closes early at 3pm. Wells Fargo will notarize your documents for free! Free WIFI at the Holbrook Library.

We stayed in the campground with 30 amp service and thought it was more than adequate for our needs. We chose a large site, which was level and easy to back into. Some of the sites did have a trench of sorts that had to be crossed when backing in, but for the most part, people had no trouble getting leveled out. We would definitely stay here again. Our unit is self-contained, so we didn't miss having a toilet or water on site. We camped at Crystal Forest Gift Shop Campground in a Fifth Wheel.

Mostly this is to refine some points of these campgrounds. There are 2 Museums at this entrance to Petrified National Park. The one on the west side of the road has 30 amp power and that site cost $10.75/day. The Museum on the east side has the free camping. There are about 6 sites up front with de-energized 30 amp plugs. There are multiple dry camping sites behind these sites. There was water available but I was told by a gentleman in the store that he wouldn't put it in his radiator or give to a dog. This place has flat parking, is the only place within 25 miles, is right at the entrance to the Park, and it's free. It also has pretty good Verizon MiFi 4G service. You should come with a full fresh water tank and empty waste tanks, and full fuel tanks in your rig and your toad. We camped at Crystal Forest Gift Shop Campground in a Motorhome.

This is a basic, gravel parking lot with only 20A. service. It's handy to the Park and will work fine. Some of the sites have picnic tables.

The view is beautiful and almost worth the $10.75 itself. Staff person was very friendly. We camped at Crystal Forest Gift Shop Campground in a Motorhome.

This spot is located on the left side of the road, about 18 miles toward the NP. The other side has
"free" camping without electricity. It was busy later, so come early.

This is one of those electric only, self contained units only sites. The location couldn't get any better if you're here to see Petrified Forest National Park, which was why we were there. There are no frills here. We did get a very usable Verizon Data signal out here surprisingly. The front office preferred cash only, but begrudgingly accepted CC. We would definitely stop here again if visiting the park again. We camped at Crystal Forest Gift Shop Campground in a Travel Trailer.

Crystal Forest is summed up in "you get what you pay for"; its FREE. If you are looking for free/cheep NO hookups this is the place. The area is dry dusty desert. But Free is Free.

Plus features:

Close to the Petrified Forest.

Easy to get in and out.

Not a lot of people.

Would stay again, if trying to save money. We camped at Crystal Forest Gift Shop Campground in a Motorhome.

To clarify precious reviews: Yes, two gift shops and same owner. The western gift shop has free camping, but no hookups. Some spots have a shady pavilion, and there are some teepees you could stay in for free, too. The eastern gift shop offers electric, 30amp, which does work, for $10. Neither has much in the way of food, just some candy bars, sodas and a six pack or two of Budweiser. Our kids (1, 3, and 12) had fun playing in the teepees and random petrified wood about the place. Great spot for a night or two while exploring the national park. We camped at Crystal Forest Gift Shop Campground in a Travel Trailer.

It is hard to rate this campground, because other than a good level campsites with a picnic table, there are no facilities such as electric, water or dump. However the price is right - free! The campground is situated so one can enter the North entrance of Petrified Wood National Park, tour the park with a RV, pulling a toad, and exit via the South entrance and within less than a mile, boondock at Crystal Forest Gift Shop Campground, at no cost. That can make a pleasant and rewarding day. We camped at Crystal Forest Gift Shop Campground in a Motorhome.

This free campground has no hook ups, no dump station, and no water. Its main attraction is that it is located just outside the southern gate of the Petrified Forest National Park. It has fairly level sites , some with picnic tables. The friendly owners provide a place to dry camp adjacent to their gift shops to visitors of the park in hopes of encouraging sales, and we obliged - outstanding selection of polished petrified wood! For its value and location, it is worthwhile. We would stop here again when in the area. We camped at Crystal Forest Gift Shop Campground in a Motorhome.

As stated, this is free. What a great idea! But there was no electric available when we were here. Other review sites say yes: for $10 a night. The sites are level and clean, with a covered patio with table, and your very own petrified tree stump by the door. We explored the park from here. The gift shop ladies were very friendly! And they said we could use our generator anywhere, in spite of the signs, because there was no power. I couldn't get the form to take $0, so I put in $1. Actually, after counting what I spent in the gift shop: it might have been more. We camped at Crystal Forest Gift Shop Campground in a Motorhome.

This is a FREE site located 100 yards from the south entrance to The Petrified Forest NP. It is provided by the gift shop. There are spaces available with picnic tables (no generators allowed) and a section with no tables that allow generators. Great place to park while visiting the park. I rated it a 9 since it was better than I expected for a free site. We camped at Crystal Forest Gift Shop Campground in a Motorhome.
