Free! We really enjoyed our stay here and the ability to watch all the Sandhill Cranes! The camping is basically a circle with a (clean) pit toilet in the middle. We were here on the weekend and there were lots of people driving in and out to see the cranes all day, and kicking up quite a bit of dust. This is the reason for only 4 stars. But it was amazingly quiet here at night and we could hear the cranes inside our trailer. FYI - to the tick story, they only live in long grass, so if you stay on the trails, there should be no problem. A tick check after being out if you are concerned should also help, as ticks don't lock on very quickly and can be easily removed. Coming in via Bagby was shorter gravel and less washboarded than coming in from the north. We camped at Whitewater Draw in a Travel Trailer.

The cost is actually zero, as in free camping. This is boondocking, but without fear that someone will come and roust you out during the middle of the night. There is even a sign noting that overnight camping is permitted. There are pit toilets and picnic tables as well as a trash dumpster. There is no water or dump so arrive with full tanks and plan on hauling out your waste. There is a three-day stay limit. The reason for staying here is the birds. It is amazing with thousands of Sandhill Cranes during the winter. It is nicely dark and quiet at night. We had only one other tent camper during our two-night stay. We had very strong Verizon signal for both voice and data. Satellite was not a problem since there are no trees. You will have to travel on about two miles of fairly good dirt/gravel road that is a bit washboard. It was in good shape during our visit, but with lots of rain it might be worse. There is no directional sign on Highway 191, the main highway. The best route is to take W Davis road to the west just south of McNeil. Travel about three miles and turn left (south) on gravel road Coffman. In about two miles you will find the entrance on the right side, drive about a quarter of a mile and you will be there. We camped at Whitewater Draw in a Motorhome.

Outstanding little free AZ Game & Fish Department refuge with small parking lot for ~6 small rigs or ~4 big rigs. No services except a vault toilet but thousands of sandhill cranes and other water fowl during the winter. We camped at Whitewater Draw in a Motorhome.

Date of Stay: February, 2011 - $1.00
Overall Rating:

If you are a birdwatcher, this is an amazing place. You enter over about 1.5 miles of dirt road, but our 32' Class A did fine, as long as we drove slowly. You just pull in and camp for free (signs make clear it's OK). There are pit toilets, picnic tables and thousands of wintering Sandhill Cranes - if you arrive before mid/late February. It was magical - and though we initially worried about being alone overnight "in the middle of nowhere," it turned out that there were several other campers there both nights. Highly recommended in the winter months. There is no charge for camping here, but I had to list $1 so the site would post it! We camped at Whitewater Draw in a Motorhome.
