Relieved that the check-in system has been changed. You can now pay at a machine right there in the campground instead of buying passes from the forest service HQ. Credit card only at the machine, very convenient. Have stayed here before in a different loop and chose Coati loop for smaller rigs and it was lovely. Lots of birds and very quiet, as it's a mile or two from the highway. Dry camping USFS campground with no hookups. The dump station is located up the road and is open only on certain days of the week. Paved roads and sites, good Verizon. We camped at Windy Hill Camprgound - USFS in a Motorhome.

Overall Rating:

This is a beautiful upper Sonoran Desert lakeside campground. We stayed in the Coati section, which is for RVs under 30 feet and tent campers. There are several other sections for larger RVs. Each site had a covered picnic table and a fire pit. Handicap sites are also available. Coati had several bathrooms with flush toilets. The bathrooms near the camp host had four showers and a handicap accessible shower. There is a playground for children. There were paths throughout Coati for scenic hiking. There are not any hook-ups at the sites, but there were water spigots to fill up containers at several places throughout the campground. Trash cans are available in the bathrooms. Windy Hill does offer two dump station on certain days. A Tonto National Forest pass is required to camp. The daily pass is $8. There are two places locally to purchase these near the campground: Spring Creek Store and the Tonto Basin Ranger District. Maximum stay is 14 days. Cell reception varied within the campground, at times we were limited to 3G and other times we topped out at 2 bars of LTE on Verizon. We camped at Windy Hill Camprgound - USFS in a Travel Trailer.

Stayed both here and at Cholla. Cholla is prettier and the sites better maintained but both are great values. Good 4G Verizon in both. Sites well spaced and the campground was quiet even on the weekend. Plenty of showers and they were very clean and well designed. We camped at Windy Hill Camprgound - USFS in a Motorhome.

Date of Stay: March, 2015 - $6.00
Overall Rating:

We stay at Windy Hill CG every March or April to coincide with bass spawn in Roosevelt lake. There are multiple loops named after desert animals in the Windy Hill campground. If you plan on using a generator, all of the loops except Coati have quiet time restrictions from 10pm to 8am. If you need to run a generator after those hours, Coati is the only one you are permitted to do so in. There is an exception during the summer months to allow campers to run their generators 24/7 due to the excessive heat and need for A/C.

Several of the loops limit the size of RVs, but don't let that deter you. We stayed in Coati Loop which has a 30 foot limit. However, we set up in a site with our 36 foot FW, and still had enough room to park our truck and a friends car without encroaching on another site or the road.

To camp here, you need to purchase a Tonto pass at a local business. You can also pre purchase your pass on-line so you don't have to hunt down a vendor or arrive after hours. Do a search for "Tonto Pass Online", and you'll see options for purchasing your pass. Failure to display your pass is a $100 fine. You must display a pass immediately upon parking, so don't set up camp, then go looking for a pass. Passes cost $6.00. They can also be purchased for $3.00 if you are 62 or over, or have an Access Pass.

The restrooms and showers were spotless. The showers were a comfortable temperature and they had nice pressure. There are dumpsters located in each loop to collect your trash.

If you are camping here, take the time to go see the Tonto Cliff Dwellings which are very close to the campground. It is a steep hike to get to them, but well worth the effort. We camped at Windy Hill Camprgound - USFS in a Fifth Wheel.

With a senior pass, $3 is perfect. We usually spend two weeks at a time when visiting here, this year we stayed a month, only 14 day stays are allowed during peak season. The scenery is wonderful. This campground is very quiet on the weekdays, but weekends are a different story. This place has solar showers and one-holer flush restrooms....both could use some major cleaning. There is water in various places, you have to look for the spigots recommend you fill up as you drive in. A sign says no hoses to be attached to the water spigots, but it would be impossible to put water in your rig or a jug without a hose.....guess, they just want you to not hook it up to your RV. Also, a poster above said that only 32 feet is allowed, I believe the 32 foot limit is for only the first campground on the right. We camped at Windy Hill Camprgound - USFS in a Motorhome.

Rate reflects senior discount. Huge campground, spread out over a large area in several loops. Sites mostly level, well-spaced, no hookups, fairly pretty views overlooking the lake and with mountains nearby. We camped at Windy Hill Camprgound - USFS in a Motorhome.

The NFS says 32' max length but don't let that scare you away. We have a 37' 5W and there were tons of places that we could fit. If you are set up to boon-dock and like to live that way - you'll love Lake Roosevelt. It was quiet quiet quiet. We had a good 3g Verizon signal. Even though many of the loops were closed our loop was only about 15% filled. In summer I imagine it might be a different place but during the late Winter it was wonderful. Lots to do in the area. Two dumps up at Cholla CG - about 5 miles - but only open Thurs-Sunday (two days each) 10am to 2pm. Filled our fresh water from the numerous spigots into a bladder tank. We stayed here 2 weeks - next time will be longer. Much longer. We camped at Windy Hill Camprgound - USFS in a Fifth Wheel.

This is a well maintained campground with wide enough gravel pads to put out your awning and slides. The sites are a little close to each other but we found that most people were gone during the day boating/fishing. There is drinking water available and dumpsters spaced out within the loop. There is a campground host here year round. This is a Forest Service Campground and they do take the Goleden Age Pass which must be displayed on your dashboard or in your window along with your camping permit. Most of the sites have a good view of the lake. They all come with picnic tables, fire ring and Ramadas. There is a limit of 32" but we were able to fit our 35" Motorhome in without any problems. The dump station is located 10 mi. North on SR188 at milepost 249 across from the Cholla Recreation Site. We enjoyed our visit We camped at Windy Hill Camprgound - USFS in a Motorhome.
