Site is above the surrounding countryside at ~7200 ft elevation so temperature is about 5 degrees cooler, which is welcome in the summer heat. Canyon View area is a bit rough to get into but doable with patience. The area just outside the Visitor Center is fully paved and has a rest room building with grey water dish washing area as well as a single fresh water spigot (which was repaired while we were there). Great, and some challenging hiking trails, some to outstanding ruins, can also take a Ranger-led hike. They currently only have porta-pottys, as their 40 year-old sewage system is in sad need of repair. Very interesting native demonstrations of rug and basket weaving as well as painting in the Visitor Center during the day. Only a couple of the pull-through sites are anything near level but more of the back-ins are mostly level. Small trading post and gas station at the intersection with the highway at the bottom of the hill were closed both times we were there. Very peaceful. We camped at Navajo National Monument in a Motorhome.

There are 2 campgrounds at Navajo NM - Canyon View and Sunset View - we stayed in Canyon View. There are (I think) 16 sites in this campground. Both campgrounds are FREE. All are quite private, nestled in among juniper and pinon. The sites are not huge - different sizes, some pull throughs, and supper huge rigs may have a problem. We saw two buses/motor homes that were about 25-30' long and they did fine. We camped in a truck camper pulling a 10' utility trailer.

No wood fires, but there are charcoal fire grates, plus a picnic table. Verizon worked OK - anything from 1x to 3 bars LTE depending on time of day - the sites are up high on a mesa, maybe 1/4 mile from the visitor center and the other campground. Trash bins scattered around, a few toilets, extremely quiet, great views to the north.

The other campground is fine but views to south so not as spectacular. The sites are mostly back in and short - there are some 'pull throughs' which are really just wide spots by the side of the road. It is also free, and would be fine for a night.

Overall a great experience and very unique. Try to do one of the semi-strenuous hikes to see the Betatkin cliff house up close. We camped at Navajo National Monument in a Truck Camper.

This is a good stop in northern Arizona where few, if any, other campgrounds exist. And the price is right: free. You will need to work at leveling your rig at nearly every site. No showers and water available at the restroom building. This is not a big rig place and it is about 9 miles off of US160. It is quiet and the views are great. The visitor center is quite interesting and it is worth staying an extra day or two to do the hikes to the ruins. We camped at Navajo National Monument in a Travel Trailer.

It's a rarity to find a free campground with incredible views, clean bathrooms and large private campsites. We will definitely return to this wonderful place. We camped at Navajo National Monument in a Motorhome.

This facility, operated by the National Park Service, is located in northeast Arizona at the end of State Highway 564 off of US Highway 160 at an elevation of 7,200 feet. There is no entry fee or camping fee. There are two campgrounds. Sunset View is the one best suited for RVs and is open year around. The interior road is paved, The pads are paved and reasonable level. Sites are widely spaced and surrounded by trees. There are no hookups but water is available. The web site and a sign on the highway indicate that the maximum RV length is 28 feet but there are a few sites that can accommodate larger units including our 35-foot motorhome. The Visitor Center offers exhibits, Native American art and craft demonstrations, movies and Ranger talks. A short self-guided trail leads to an overlook that provides a good view of the Betataken ruin on the opposite wall of a canyon. A Ranger-guided hike into the canyon and the ruin is available. It is a beautiful place and the staff was friendly and helpful. The only reason I am not giving it a higher rating is that there are no hookups. We will go there again. We camped at Navajo National Monument in a Motorhome.

There are two campgrounds: Canyon View (very rutted roads, gravel sites, pit toilets, killer views) and Sunset (paved sites, flush toilets). This review is of Sunset, which is quite close to the very nice Visitor Center and the trails. We loved this free--and quite nice--campground much more than most fee-based campgrounds. Roomy, shaded sites with picnic tables and grills. Very nice bathroom with flush toilets and hot running water (no showers). Just a gorgeous park. We have a 25' Class C and fit perfectly, but there was a Class A with a toad that sort of fit. In high season, I wouldn't try to come here in a long RV, but off season, it worked. We camped at Navajo National Monument in a Motorhome.
