Overall Rating:

The park is not very far off the hwy, but far enough not to be overly distrubed by the road noise. We stayed in a group loop spot. It is very close quarters, but has 2 picnic tables and fire rings. One thing that occured regularly during our stay is the power goes off at all hours of the day and night. It is not close to the bathrooms, but an easy walk to them. The spots have trees surrounding them. Some single spots are good size. There are full hookups and non-hookup sites. Those with hookups have both 50 & 30 amp. The water pressure is good, be sure to have a water pressure guage to prevent problems with the pressure in the rig. The length of the spot is good, but the width is what makes the spot we were in not very desirable. The park needs to spread more gravel on the sites so they don't become so muddy when it rains. The roads are dirt. The showers are adequate. However, note there is no shelf and only 2 hooks. These hooks are close to the shower and items may get wet when the shower is on. The water is almost hot and has a timer on it. So you must push it on frequently. The showers are individual suites and clean.(The building has one "room" for each sex with only a toilet, it also has 2 other "rooms" with toilet and shower.) There are also water spickets close by the shower buildings. There is no cell signal in the campground. It's about 30 miles from Pinetop/Lakeside. There you can acquire good 3G AT&T service. However, can't retrieve voicemail. Alpine is about 20 miles and also good 3G AT&T service. There is a small store on the lake about 2 miles down the road that sells a few supplies for fishing, the RV, clothes, food and ice. It's part of the fishing area and it rents boats and has a launch ramp. Overall the camp is clean and well kept and we'd stay there again. We did not notice any pull through sites, but many sites are long enough for big rigs. We had full hookups and found the price a bit high. We camped at Apache Trout Campground- Big Lake Rec Area in a Motorhome.

Overall Rating:

Have visited here the past three September. A very nice National Forest campground in the White Mtns. Campground sits an easy hundred yards or so from Big Lake. Nearest town is Eager, about 23 miles away, but there is a small camp store a half mile before the campground on Big Lake that provides fishing/camping supplies and some basics. No cell service in campground, but you can get a signal at the Big Lake store. This is one of only two NFS campgrounds in the state of Arizona with electric hookups, therefore it books fast. Level gravel sites. Extremely clean bathrooms and showers.

Camp layout is odd. About half the sites are FHU while the other half are dry. The FHU and dry sites are interspersed among each other, not in separate areas loops. Additionally, over half of the hookup sites are set up as doubles, so you would have to pay for 2 sites.

If you can live without hookups, the National Forest campground next door (Rainbow Campground) offers more for your money - huge paved sites, good bathrooms, same fresh mountain air, for a lot less money. Would stay here again if I could get the right site, a single standalone electric site otherwise would first consider options next door at Rainbow. We camped at Apache Trout Campground- Big Lake Rec Area in a Motorhome.
