Camped in a Motorhome in Site B61. Stayed the maximum 2 weeks and could have stayed longer. So much to do with the trails and activities. Went with the Bird Walk group twice and both times saw different wildlife. So many birds!! Was surprised by how much wildlife was around us. Also enjoyed the bluegrass band at the trailhead. Very quiet, beautiful views all around. Our site was very level. Close to Tuscon and we enjoyed the Gem and Mineral Shows, Sweetwater Wetlands and Mt. Lemmon and the Observatory. Will return. We camped at Catalina State Park in a Motorhome.

Overall Rating:

The sites are fairly level and are laid out well so that those on the outer loop cannot see directly into other campsites. There are small trees providing a tiny bit of shade throughout the campground. Water pressure is decent. Trails around the campground are easy, and the shorter ones are dog-friendly. Although it's nice to be close to amenities, with a Walmart and other shopping right across the street, the campers here are a bit noisy, playing loud music from their rigs throughout the day. We chalked this up to people who don't camp much and thus either aren't comfortable with the sounds of nature or who don't realize that they are affecting others. As as soon as I told the hosts about it, they took care of it. When those people aren't around, you can hear plenty of birdsong. Despite the noisy neighbors, it is a pretty nice campground, so we will be back. We camped at Catalina State Park in a Travel Trailer.

If you have a road bicycle, bring it! There is a designated multi-use path accessible from the campground entrance that runs for miles and miles all over Tucson.

My favorite campground, improved this year by the addition of free WiFi! Granted, we had to log back in a few times each day, but it was good enough for streaming. The mountains surrounding the campground are gorgeous and it seems like miles from civilization, even though I-10 and a big mall are just a mile away. Excellent bathrooms and showers, kept very clean by volunteers. I love having a sink for dishwashing at each of the bathrooms. This was our first stay in the newer B Loop, and while it's not as intimate and private as the A Loop, I now prefer it for the better showers. In A, you have to keep pressing a button to maintain water flow, but B is a steady stream. Plenty of hot water too. Hiking trails begin right at the campground, or at a major trailhead about one mile into the park. Plenty of guided bird walks and nature hikes, plus musical programs on Saturdays. We found the campground quiet and peaceful despite the holidays. No campfires allowed except for charcoal in BBQ grill. Catalina State Park is the perfect mix of gorgeous nature and the convenience of a major city. We camped at Catalina State Park in a Travel Trailer.

Tips for other Campers:

Walmart across street. Choice of grocery stores within 10 minutes and plenty more within 20 (Safeway, Fry's, Basha's, Whole Foods, Trader Joe's, Sprouts). Search for Happy Hours on Yelp and you'll find plenty of reasonably priced meals. Catalina Laundry is under new management and 10 minutes away, and apparently improved, but we still prefer to go downtown to Wildcat Laundry.

Great bathroom facilities. Tiled showers. Sealed roads and parking but my one complaint is the picnic table and bbq area were dirt. Also think $30 is a bit high for SP but that seems to be AZ policy everywhere. Great walks in the park and a good shopping centre across the road from the entrance to the park. Overall Rating:

Catalina has two campgrounds: A is more rural, with mature vegetation, while B is younger and easier to see your neighbors. At least for A, there is a one-way driving loop. To avoid having to drive the entire loop, reserve site 24 if you want a pull-through and site 1 or 25 for a back-in. Site 1 doesn't enter the loop; but for 24 and 25, you will have to enter the loop where the sign indicates no entry. Site 11 has the most shade; 18 is, relatively, the most secluded. Both campgrounds have clean, modern bathroom/shower facilities. The toilet stalls need hangers for towels, clothing, etc. And the A facility often smells like fish, for a reason unknown to me. The showers are wonderful, however. They are elegantly tiled, as if you were staying at the Hilton complex down the road. The problem is the shower layout is stupid, as water will splash under the shower curtain and onto the floor of the small, adjacent changing area. The soap dish also is far too small to handle a bar of soap and a shampoo bottle. If you take a several-minute shower at night, the timed bathroom lights will go out, although the shower light remains on. It's as if you're in a fishy teen horror flick! There's plenty of hiking and birding to be done here, and dozens of other birding locations within an hour's drive. The Tucson Audubon Society operates a small gift/snack shop at the Catalina trail head parking lot. But horses are allowed on some trails, so watch for road apples. There's no wifi internet here, so try San Carlos' Grill in the shopping plaza across from the park on Hwy. 77. Or, try the modern Oro Valley library, a few miles from the park entrance. Get directions from the ranger's station. We camped at Catalina State Park in a Travel Trailer.

Tips for other Campers:

There is a Fry's grocery south on Hwy. 77, which might be cheaper than the closer Safeway on First St. Safeway has a gas station with prices that seem to be about a low as you'll find without driving further.

This is a perfect example of what a state park should be. The views are great. The location was fantastic for shopping. Best Buy, Walmart, Petsmart are literally across the street form the entrance as well as other stores. Down the road anything you could want. The neighborhood was very clean, high end and safe. The park itself was immaculate. There are tons of great hiking trails in the park. Across the street is a paved biking trail that goes for I have no idea how far. I rode it 10 miles then called it a day but it goes much further. As you enter the shopping area where Best Buy is, on your left you will see the paved off road biking path. It was amazing. I wish I could have stayed longer but I had to move on. I would gladly stay here again. I echo what previous reviewers have said about Ringtail not being nice but A and B are both nice. There were only a couple of good OTA channels and ATT was dropping calls even though it showed 1-2 bars of service. I found Verizon calls to be stable but the data was slow. in the neighborhood of 3mb/s download speed which would go up to 5 or 6 at times. It was still usable but at times kinda slow. T mobile was good for streaming data. I never bothered putting my booster up because it wasn't bothering me that much. Site accessibility (Easy in and out. Roads in good condition, good signs) - 5 Campground location (Perfect location to Tucson, nice surroundings) - 5 Nearby amenities (Shopping literally across the street) - 5 Site Privacy (Good spacing) - 4 Campground amenities (Clean bathrooms/showers. On site dump) - 4 Dog friendly (Great hiking trails, nice walks around camp) - 5 Activities (Lots of hiking, great biking, shopping) - 5 Cost ($30/night for 50 amp W/E) - 4 Staff friendliness (Friendly but not in your business) - 5 Connectivity (2 major OTA networks and some fillers, ATT dropped calls, Verizon was slow but usable) - 3 Total rating = 4.5. We camped at Catalina State Park in a Motorhome.

Really doesn't get any better for then this for us. Plenty of room between sites, great hiking, close to all the services you could need, very clean bathrooms, perfectly kept up, easy to drive roads, big sites, several dump sites. No fires allowed. Need reservations, a little road noise, many locals hiking on the weekends, need drive through town to get to it, and watch your pets, the coyotes wander the campground at all hours. We camped at Catalina State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

We stayed here three nights. Our site was in Loop A, and had water and electric. The restrooms and showers in both loops were clean. B Loop looks newer and has more room, but there are also more sites in that loop. There are coyotes that roam freely, and they seem not to be bothered by humans. Also saw roadrunners. There are several short hikes nearby, and we did a couple of them. Next time we'll be able to plan further ahead so we can stay here longer. Reservations are a must in the cooler season, and I could only find one spot with 3 nights in a row available, even 3 weeks ahead of time. It's quiet and desert beautiful, and the sunsets are breathtaking. We camped at Catalina State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Across Oracle Rd from the park entrance is a modern, fairly large shopping center with a Walmart, movie theater, and several eating establishments along with shopping. Easy bike ride to get dinner or provisions. Inside the park, we highly recommend the best archaeological tour in the world. The ranger is very entertaining and engaging, and obviously passionate about the subject. The area is a treasure, in more ways than one.

A clean, well-maintained State Park, with level, spacious, paved sites. Good, paved interior roads. Great mountain views, plenty of trails, lots of wildlife - roadrunners & coyotes visited our site daily. Very clean restrooms/showers. Nearby restaurants, shopping, etc.; plenty to do nearby. Campgrounds were full the 2 weeks we were here - I'd recommend a reservation well in advance. We would definitely stay here again. We camped at Catalina State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

I would echo the most previous reviewer. This is a very well run state park and it's obviously very popular with local day users who begin coming in to the trailhead early in the day. The sites are nicely laid out, level, and paved under the RV. Most sites are back in, but there are also pull-throughs. The restrooms were immaculate and the showers were private. In loop A, reservations can be made for W&E or dry camping. If the latter, the park puts a lock on the electrical panel to prevent use. About the only drawback for this park to serve as a staging point for visits to Tucson attractions, it's 14 miles to Tucson on very tedious Route 77, with stoplights every third of a mile or so that always seem to turn red as drivers approach them. That is not the park's fault, of course, and the park is a welcome oasis in the chaotic suburbs of Oro Valley out on the highway. For the week we were her in mid-February, the park was full each day of the week. We enjoyed our weeklong stay and would likely stay here again when in the area, but will make sure to reserve early if in the "high" season of December - March. We camped at Catalina State Park in a Motorhome.

Beautiful park located just north of Tucson. Large big rig friendly sites with picnic tables and fire pits. Lots of walking trails and scenic areas. Not much shade. Clean facilities. A new shopping center opened a few miles from the park making grocery shopping convenient. Can be tough to get a site during the busy winter season but reservations are taken six months out. We will stay here again in our motorhome. We camped at Catalina State Park in a Motorhome.

This park is located at the foot of the Catalina Mountains. The sunsets and sunrises are spectacular.

We stayed here two nights in our A-frame trailer. It's a wonderful location to access hikes into the Catalina Mountains. The park is also close to a lot of shopping if extra supplies are needed.

The sites are large, flat and well separated The electric sites have 15/30/50 amp service and water. There is not a lot of shade because the park is in the Sonoran Desert, so it would probably be a hot place during the summer. Other than that, it's another wonderful Arizona State Park.
