After avoiding this RV Park for five years, I returned since I could use my Passport America discount. My opinion, and rating of this RV Park has not changed. I realize the snow birders who loyally stay here each winter season love this place. It's an okay place, especially so when other Tucson RV Parks are placed in the mix, for a few nights during the off season. During the offseason when the place is only one third occupied or less, the tight narrow RV sites are not so bad. Those small sites, are not level. The lanes are very narrow. I advise to avoid ustheng tiny pool, which during my stay was a toxic chemical bath. The electrical system here appears to be hundred years of age, and thus has the potential to inflict considerable damage to unprotected RV appliances. The facilities smell like rats, and are not cleaned well. Regardless this place will be full in a few months. I suppose there is little incentive for the owner to upgrade the RV Park to modern standards. I cut my visit short, and I suppose I'll go another five years before returning. We camped at Desert Trails RV Park (40+ park) in a Motorhome.

I really liked this park. Stayed 4 nights and wish I could have stayed longer. We were in space C-4 and had lots of space, but I could see that other spaces were not as spacious. The park is built on top of a closed water park, and some water park artifacts remain. Our space backup up to the desert and the views of the mountains were stunning. The RV compound is next to state park land with well marked hiking trails. The park has lot's (really a lot) of cactus gardens that feel natural and are beautiful. Everyone I met was very friendly and we were invited to happy hour by multiple campers. The office staff was very helpful and informative, they have tons on information concerning surrounding activities. I will definitely return to Desert Trails. Beautiful Sonoran Desert site. Warm, friendly community & fun events. Arts & crafts of every description, taught by residents. Many long term winter residents from U.S. & Canada. Rich & poor. Big Rigs & Pop-ups, warmly welcomed. Everybody equal. Weekly One Hour "Warm Up" session with humorous Owner (Donuts & Coffee). Worth a try. We started "RVing" in 2009. Over the years we have stayed in all types of RV parks..on the beach in Baja, swamps in Louisiana, expensive "RV Resorts" and even the old standby, Walmart. Desert Trails has become our favorite park over the past few years and we now return here every winter. The only "knock" on Desert Trails is that some of the sites are pretty narrow and close together. This one is larger and fits us well. We enjoy being able to walk in the desert on the trails, which we do most days. We enjoy the varied entertainment the park provides several nights a week, usually on a "pass the hat" basis. We enjoy the friendly, helpful employees and volunteer help. In addition, the park is reasonably close to shopping and restaurants, etc. The rates are extremely reasonable..the rate quoted above is the monthly rate of $540 for 30 amp service converted to a 30 day month. I don't think any park in Tucson can match it. All in all, Desert Trails is the best you can do! We camped at Desert Trails RV Park (40+ park) in a Travel Trailer.

Tips for other Campers:

Tucson has plenty of things to see and do. The office has advice on where to go and offers a Tucson discount book that gives up to 50% off of activities. In addition, the park owner talks about special events going on in Tucson in the Monday AM meeting. Often, he gets feedback from the audience from those that have attended the events so you can get feedback on parking, costs, etc.

Unusual park, not at all like the majority of parks in the area. Very conscientious and involved owner. Lots of residents come here year after year, and many make lasting friendships. Tons of activities including excellent entertainers, food trucks twice a week, and club activities for writers, photographers, rock hounds and others. Situated in the desert with lots of trails that go for miles. We camped at Desert Trails RV Park (40+ park) in a Motorhome.

Many activities and lots of walking trails in Tucson Mountain Park which borders the back of the RV park. Usually booked up in winter. Many come back year after year and stay all winter. Great staff and lots of things to do, like a shooting group that goes to the Tucson Firing Range weekly. And a gem and mineral group. Also a very professional group of photographers. They also have 50 amp sites in the park. Power is included in the price you pay if you stay by the month or season. We camped at Desert Trails RV Park (40+ park) in a Motorhome.

Beautifully landscaped desert park. Some very nice sites, some parking lot sites. Most are not very big if you have slides. Many regular seasonals. With a few exceptions, they were very friendly to transients. Park has lots of activities, music, and social gatherings. We were here in 2010, and that's one of the reasons we came back here for the holiday break. Park staff are wonderful hosts. The New Years dance they threw was one of the best we had ever attended. A lot of work and trouble by staff and volunteers to pull that off! If there was a down side, it was that the wifi in our location (even with a booster) was so so at best, and frustrating the rest of the time. We camped at Desert Trails RV Park (40+ park) in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

There is a wide network of desert trails behind the camp. Trails marking is minimal. Take the map the park provides. These are rough trails, narrow in places, with lots of encroaching cacti. Anything from hard packed dirt to loose gravel, which changes without warning. Gullies and bends. Cycling risks close encounters of the cactus kind. Hiking is fine, but wear good boots, and mind your step. (Taking tweezers and bandaids is not a bad idea.) Also, visit PIMA air museum. Totally amazing.

Overall Rating:

Rate based on 1 month stay. This park is a 5.0 rating at best. This is not a resort-it's a campground-built around an old waterpark that they didn't bother to tear out. Bathrooms, office and many out buildings, gym equipment, furnishings in them are worn out/thrift store appearance. Sites: mostly small, tight, oddly shaped in odd places, some w/uneven surfaces. Our site was long, closer to county road-traffic noise and drivers in park speed. Many of the RVers return year after year (some 18 +/- years) they get the level, larger, quieter sites in the back. Many of the activities offered didn't interest us (we call them sit down activities) no tennis courts/pickleball/bumbee ball, no water/pool activities and there are 'private groups' (?). The park was mostly full but if you're a planner it's not hard to reserve (as people claim?). We planned to stay longer, based on reviews, but canceled based on experience. We will return for a month next winter. Hopely, the owners make some changes/upgrades, invest $$, including using computer/on-line, text information sharing and hiring (work kamper?) experienced activity facilitator-it's a large CG/changing population dynamics. Attend the Monday info mtgs for (kinda) updated/info or look at Bulletin Boards for info, or show up only to learn it's canceled. The music events are good-pass the (coffee can?) to pay, marked trails are on 'flat' desert ground, yoga-$2-pay instructor, mountain bike group is semi organized-offering beginner's and advanced groups, the "Mtn Bike course" is odd. Owner/mgr (male) can be curt. We are first time desert campers-it would have been helpful for office to offer a 'beware of and what to do in case of' snakes, scorpions, ants, packRATS, coyotes, goat heads- thorns and valley fever, at this park. This park is 8+ miles from stores-nearby Fire/Rescue is busy. We camped at Desert Trails RV Park (40+ park) in a Motorhome.

We stayed at Desert Trails for the months of Nov and Dec. We had never stayed out west before and have decided once was enough. The owner and help were very friendly (a Plus). The Library was the best I have seen. The site, on which we were parked, sucked. Small, narrow and were told, when we reserved a site in early summer, we would get a 50 AMP...wrong.. Residents told us, someone on 50 amp either had to die or you had be there at least 3 seasons to get a large 50 amp. It is an old waterpark and I have to give the owner credit...he certainly was great at PR. It really is an old dilapidated water park and the so-called tower, with 360* views, was nothing more than a tower used in the OLD rundown water park as a viewing area. Very bad but Great PR. We camped at Desert Trails RV Park (40+ park) in a Motorhome.

Close to the Old Tucson, Desert Museum and lots of places to visit in Tucson proper. We had a person on a Rice Rocket who must have been going 100mph twice a day and that rattled all the people in the park. Close to the Casino and did win money there. Food in Tucson, north of Tucson, is some of the best. Visited the Gaslight Theater and it was great. If you are going to stay in Tucson, do your homework on RV Parks.

The snowbirds had left, we had the park virtually to ourselves (so this is a review for the park off season only). As a result we had unobstructed wonderful views of the surrounding park, and amazing quiet. WiFI was really good (but then we were the only one's there) It's about 20 min from Tuscon, other shopping closer. If you're wanting solitude, this park, in off season, is a great deal! Huge, nice park with tons of amenities, most of which we didn't use. The park was mostly empty during our stay, but were told it is full during the winter months. As previous reviewers have said, it is a bit far from town, but worth it for the location to the national park and the openness. Staff was exceedingly friendly and helpful.
