Seriously, this IS the state park other states should try to emulate. Gorgeous setting, amazing sites, on the small side, super quiet, with some beautiful hiking trails. 30 sites total, 20 full hookups, 10 with water and electric only. Full hookup sites are mostly bigrig friendly, but a few are too short or not level, so check them out before deciding. The three pull through sites had great views of the lake, but had questionable approaches/departure hills. We didn't have reservations, but arrived on a Tuesday and were told to drive through and pick a spot from ones available..tough choice, as the are all wonderful, but ended up at site 18. Wow!! Flat, lots of concrete, and huge. The water and electric only sites didn't seem very level, and I don't think any of them could handle a rig larger then 30'. Wish we could have stayed longer, but the park was booked solid over the weekend. The only downside was no Verizon coverage. We camped at Lake Fort Smith State Park in a Motorhome.

Fayetteville is an awesome college town with a very pretty campus and some amazing resturants and bars. Hamontrees grilled cheese was incredible. Drive through the campus and see the Razorback Stadium. Gorgeous drives in the mountains.

We were very pleased with the camp ground. All the other reviews were correct on how clean it is. The parks workers check the trash at least 3 times a day and there is absolutely no litter. It is also very quiet and no wild or misbehaved campers. The restrooms were always very clean. The only reasons I didn't give the park a 10 was the cellular service, access to the bath houses and convenience for food and supplies. Verizon doesn't work, but AT&T had about 2 bars of LTE. There are only two bath houses. If you are in sites 1 through 9 it isn't a far walk. We were in site 15 and the bath house was about 150 yards away, as the crow flies, but if you went through the woods to get to it, the climb is about 60 feet high at about a 50 degree angle through uncleared land. You have to walk around in the road which adds quite a distance. We found a Dollar General in Mountainburg, which is only about 10 or so minutes away. It is well stocked and would have just about anything you would need. The sites themselves were very large and laid out well. I had to raise my rig 1 and 3/4 inches to get level side to side and lower the nose quite a bit to get level nose to tail, but nothing severe, in site 15. The sewer hookup was at the end of the pad and I had to use an extension to get to it. The electric hookups are lit and have 50, 30 and 20 amp plugs with breakers. The water pressure was reduced to 50 psi at the outlet. As far as the steep grade at the park, it is no worse than the long grades you will face on I-49 getting there. The road getting in to the park is wide and well maintained. As long as you have an adequately powered tow vehicle with proper trailer brakes, you won't have any problem. I got off I-49 at Chester and it was a short drive over to US 71. None of the grades or curves were no worse than on Mt. Magazine or in the Jasper, AR area, actually less. The visitor center is very nice and the lake has a great boat ramp with lots of parking. Love this park! We camped at Lake Fort Smith State Park in a Travel Trailer.

Tips for other Campers:

Sites 21 through 30 don't have sewer. Try to get a spot from 1 to 8 or 9 if you use the bathhouse. Alma, about 25 minutes away, is the closest location for a sit down chain restaurant. There is Granny's Cafe on 71 north of the park just south of Winslow and a Hamburger/ice cream joint in Mountainburg (only open during the day during the week and closed on Sunday's)

Arkansas did it right when they built this park, especially this RV camp site. Fantastic camp sites. The absolute cleanest shower and restroom facilities I've ever seen anywhere in the world. I cannot say enough good things about Lake Ft. Smith State Park. It's like they had a dream about what the ideal RV camping area would be like and then they went and built it. All paved sites with lighted electrical hook ups. Tent sites built right next to each RV site. Fire pits, grill, picnic table, and wonderful 360 degree views. Hiking trails are all around. The visitor center is very nice and the staff was extremely friendly. Paved and curbed roads all through the park make access easy even in wet weather. We had all the network channels on the antenna and AT&T wireless and data service was excellent. We will positively return to this well kept Arkansas secret. We camped at Lake Fort Smith State Park in a Travel Trailer.

Tips for other Campers:

You do need to stock up before heading to this park. It is a bit of a drive to the nearest retail stores. If you have to go, I recommend you head south back to Alma, AR. I recommend accessing the park from Chester, AR rather than Winslow. Hwy 71 North is okay between the park and Winslow, but from Winslow over to I-49 (I-540) across Hwy 74 narrows considerably and has no shoulders with lots of curves.

This is a beautiful, secluded and quiet Arkansas State Park. "Wow" was my first impression when pulling into our site. Each site has a paved parking pad, large gravel tent pad (15X15) and a concrete pad for picnic table and grill. Also there is a large gravel area for the fire ring. The gravel size is small and dead level. Each site is cleaned and raked in preparation for the next camper. The entire site area is made level by beautiful block walls. Every site looks new and fresh. First class.
Bathhouse was spotless. No spider webs or light fixtures full of dead bugs. Even the skylights were clean and clear. The park is secluded and can only be accessed by driving over the Boston mountains. So stock up before arriving or be prepared to drive 15 miles or so for basic food items. We camped at Lake Fort Smith State Park in a Travel Trailer.

Love, love, love this park. For a State Park they did it right. Paved and curbed roads, all sites have pads and picnic tables. Park is very well maintained. Staff is friendly and helpful. Several walking paths and lots to do in the area. We camped at Lake Fort Smith State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Our first stay was in July 2015. We liked it so much we went again in September 2015. Everything about the park is first class and well kept. The visitor center is nice and the workers there are very friendly.

The sites are paved and level, and each site has a level gravel tent pad just off of the trailer pad. I watched the workers prep the sites around us after campers left...... I never saw such attention to detail! Of course, any stray trash was picked up, unused firewood was gathered, the fine gravel was raked meticulously...... Ready for the next occupant. The workers were very friendly.

It is best to stock up on groceries before you come, but the is a Dollar General in nearby Mountainburg. Alma, Van Buren, and Fort Smith are further.

If you are planning to enjoy any water sports, forget it. No swimming, no water skiing. Fishing from a boat is OK. (This is a water source for Fort Smith, AR so the city gets to make the rules.

Fantastic swimming pool with water features for kids and the young at heart. On extremely hot days, be aware that there is minimal shade around the pool area.

Verizon cell signal was barely there, but AT&T had very good signal. We camped at Lake Fort Smith State Park in a Travel Trailer.

Tips for other Campers:

Mountainburg is nearby for groceries (Dollar General).

South on HWY71 or I-49 then east on I-40 to Altus are several wineries.

Fort Smith is south and west. Old Fort Smith is an interesting part of history to see. Learn about "Hangin'" Judge Parker.

North less than an hour is Fayetteville, home of the Arkansas Razorbacks.

An excellent experience from start to finish. Great state park with easy access to and in the park with our larger RV. Must follow the directions given on the park's website as GPS and GoogleMaps has the wrong location for the park on a barely improved road not suitable for any size RV. Lots of wildlife and a very short walk to a seasonal waterfall. Spacious blacktop sites, dead quiet at night, and full hookups made this worth the 17 mile detour from our I40 travels. We would definitely stay here again. We camped at Lake Fort Smith State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

This is easily the nicest campground we have used. The sites are well designed for access and setup. All sites had level (side to side) blacktop parking pads and excellent patio areas. We had good cell coverage and some off air TV coverage. Bath houses and showers were cleaned daily. Garbage was removed from camp ground receptacles daily as well. We camped at Lake Fort Smith State Park in a Travel Trailer.

Great state park. The only reason I gave it a 9 is there is no WiFi or cell service at the park. Otherwise one of the nicest state parks I have ever stayed at. Also, not much TV, but a clean modern campground. Better than most commercial parks. We stayed in a 35 foot rig with slides and a toad. Had plenty of room! Highly recommend. Would stay again in a heartbeat. We camped at Lake Fort Smith State Park in a Motorhome.

This is a lovely park. The sites are nicely spaced and utilize the natural environment. They mark every site with a clear sign reserved or available. The staff was very helpful on the phone. Facilities appear to be new. Leaves were beautiful this time of year. It was very quiet. Suggest getting there before dark as the drive up the mountain requires focus. We camped at Lake Fort Smith State Park in a Motorhome.

This is a new very nice state park with large sites, tons of grass and trees, and new roads. The pool and visitor center is top notch. Unfortunately, the humidity while we were there made being outside difficult. Finally a rain storm came through making the weather a bit more bearable. The negative on the RV sites was the pathetically low water pressure. For being a newly built park, there is no excuse for that. We rented a pontoon boat one day and went out on the lake. We rented an 18' pontoon for about $168 for four hours. We easily toured the whole lake twice in 2 and a half. There is no water contact permitted on the lake, so swimming is prohibited. The lake is open to fishing. They have full day rentals, but I am glad that I didn't waste the money. There is not a lot to see on the lake as the trees are thick, and the the surrounding terrain slopes up from the lake. This wasn't a bad park, but I would probably stay somewhere else if I was in the area again. We camped at Lake Fort Smith State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

A beautiful park with fresh new facilities. I just did an overnighter so didn't have the opportunity to fully explore this park. They have moved the campground and my GPS and iPad didn't know where the new entrance was. If you come in from the south (Alma) just keep going north on Hwy 71 and watch for the very few signs that there are. I guess the old campground use to be below the dam but is no more. You won't be disappointed with this one. We camped at Lake Fort Smith State Park in a Motorhome.

This is one of the most beautiful parks we've stayed in. It was built in 2008 to replace the old one when the lake level was raised. The sites are spacious and are immaculate, as are the bathhouses. There are a lot of water activities available, including a very large swimming pool. There are a number of trails, including one that borders the lake. We would definitely stay here again. We camped at Lake Fort Smith State Park in a Travel Trailer.

Beautiful campground and park. Great sites with FHUs and partially obscured view of the lake. Stayed in October and enjoyed the changing of the leaves. Only two negatives. 1. Significant drive from Interstate if you're only staying one night. 2. Swimming is not allowed in the lake: but they do have a pool. Loved the park and hope to return for multiple nights. We camped at Lake Fort Smith State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Great state park, a real gem. Clean park throughout. Sites all are paved and pretty close to perfect level. In full hookup area, each site has a side pad for screen tent or regular tent. nice lodge with programs for the kids. None of the sites are lake front, but it is designed that way to keep the lake front pristine. Nice pool, but there is a separate charge for it's use. Shhh, don't tell too many people as there are only 30 sites at this park. We camped at Lake Fort Smith State Park in a Travel Trailer.
