Are the facilities a little old and makeshift? Yes. Are the electrical hook-ups weird? Yes. In spite of that we really enjoyed our two nights at this municipal campground right in the heart of Nelson. This campground is operated by a youth services agency now and all of the proceeds from the campground fees go to support its programs. The campground is definitely dated and yet possesses a considerable amount of charm. One of the best things about it is that it's right in the middle of a lovely older neighborhood and within walking distance to the historic downtown area of Nelson. We had a back in, full hook up site. The water and electrical connections are behind a cement retaining wall and a bit awkward to reach. Be sure you back in far enough that your electrical cord reaches the outlet, which is only 15 amps and requires that you use either an adapter and/or an extension cord. There are lots of big trees for shade. A community pavilion area adjoining the office offers washing machines and dryers, a service sink, tables and benches, a microwave and electric teapot. Nice amenities for tent campers. The Wi-Fi was surprisingly good and the campground hosts gave top-notch friendly service. Although this campground is a bit on the funky side we would definitely stay here again. Nelson is an interesting town and this campground makes the best base for seeing it. We camped at City Campground in a Travel Trailer.

As this campground has only 4 full hookups (not the 7 the city claims on their website) I should have made a reservation for one. Since I did not, I had to settle for an electric only site. The access road into the campground still has as many potholes as it did when we were here last May. The campground is now operated by a youth activities centre who are trying to rectify just how many campsites there actually are (no more than 30 and not the 43 the city claims). Although the City of Nelson owns the land it has not operated the campground for over 25 years. The utilities need a serious updating. The electrical site we had required a long extension cord (provided by the campground) for connection from a breaker box to the site. We were able to get a full hookup site the second night (rate $30), but the site was extremely unlevel and our sewer drain on the RV was downhill as well. Power is only 15 amp, although the operator said it was being upgraded to 30 amp by next year. The shower lacked a sitting stool and a mat. Also a button had to be pushed every 30 seconds for hot water. Lack of mirrors and counter space at the restroom sinks as well. The only reason for coming here is the excellent location so close to the downtown. We camped at City Campground in a Motorhome.

Rate shown is for a full hookup site. Tent site is $20 and an electric one is $25. Our site was a back-in that was mostly pavement with some gravel. There are some electric sites that are more private with grass and trees. Access road was in poor shape due to breaks and pot holes. Even though campground website says there are 4 sites for 40 footers I would not recommend it due to the road. Electric is only 15 amp. Both electric and water connections were on the retaining wall behind our rig. This made it awkward to connect as it was a three foot drop below the wall to the ground. Sewer was beside our rig and slightly uphill so I had to use sewer support. No one was in the office when I arrived, but there is a campground host. A city employee showed up after 6pm to register us. The Wi-Fi signal was fairly strong and I was able to use it for Skype phone calls. No cable TV, but there are 2 channels off the antenna. Inside the facilties building are some dining tables, microwave, toaster, and laundry. The washrooms have a code that you get when registered. The campground is a 5 minute walk from downtown Nelson. There is a steep trail that takes you up to Gyro Park where you can get a good view of the city and surrounding mountains. I would come back and stay here due to its proximity to the downtown. We camped at City Campground in a Motorhome.
