I was in a level, dirt, back in site. I did not have to level the trailer side to side. Most sites were large with a picnic table and food storage cabinet. There is also a fire ring. Site was a mixture of sun and shade. We camped at Henry Cowell State Park in a Travel Trailer.

For RVs, this isn't an ideal experience. Many of the sites are not level, there are no RV conveniences like hookups, wifi, etc. But, every site comes with a picnic table and a fire ring (capable of BBQ'ing). Some sites are more spacious, some more private. The showers are coin operated: 25 cents per minutes. There is no RV water fill-up nor dump site. (You can use the Brighton Beach State Park dump site as part of your Henry Cowell fee however). Site #20 is very much not level, and right next to a trail head. Although it's close to the restrooms, it's best for tent campers. We moved over to site #27 and loved it for both it's openness and privacy (it's a large site). Lots of shade! We camped at Henry Cowell State Park in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

Provisions available in nearby Felton: groceries, pharmacy, fuel, food, etc. The old growth redwoods loop is good, but the redwoods at the Big Basin area a few miles north are more impressive. This is NOT a dog-friendly park: they are hardly allowed anywhere, and must be on a leash when they are.

Henry Cowell is a beautiful park, very close (10 minute drive) to Santa Cruz and even closer to Felton (grocery stores, gas, etc.). The campground is old and the sites vary a lot as to size, level, etc. We barely fit in our site (#39) but there were several that would have fit our 31-foot fifth wheel just fine. It is a very beautiful place to stay with hiking trails, nearby redwood grove and reasonable privacy and quiet. We camped at Henry Cowell State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Overall Rating:

We stayed two nights but didn't spend much time in the park, instead, driving the very short drive into Santa Cruz both days. We can say that the sites were clean, with beautiful surroundings, lots of shade, and spread far enough apart that we felt comfortable with our neighbors. Even though the California State Parks rate of $35 per night is way out of line with other states, especially considering amenities, we'd definitely stay here again because of its beautiful setting, quietness and closeness to Santa Cruz. We camped at Henry Cowell State Park in a Travel Trailer.

Overall Rating:

This is a great campground, located only 5 miles from downtown Santa Cruz.. It is very pet friendly. Spaces for RVs & trailers can be tight (there are wood posts). Many spaces have room for extra tents, etc. Showers were 25 cents for 2 mins. We will be back again. We camped at Henry Cowell State Park in a Travel Trailer.

We really enjoyed our stray at Henry Cowell. The campgrounds are just above the redwood tree line. You are situated in oak, and pine. It is a short hike to the redwood groves. We did a 2 mile round trip that took you into an amazing redwood forest and to a beautiful stream. You can also drive 5 minutes to the visitor center and the old growth redwood grove. Roaring Camp Big Trees Railroad is a must. It takes you on a narrow gauge into the redwoods! If you are staying at the campground you can park for free at the visitor center and walk 100' to the railroad. We camped at Henry Cowell State Park in a Travel Trailer.
