We normally stay here twice a year spring and fall Monday through Friday. Park is quiet and clean not many campers Monday to Wednesday. Park starts filled up on Thursday for the weekend. We like the space we stay in it has a good view on the ocean and surfers catching waves at the point. The beach is sandy, beach use to be rocky but rocks removed when the beach was cleaned up after the oil spill a couple of years ago. There are still rocks but not in the way to play on the beach. Most sites have new picnic tables all sites have a fire rings. There are many places to walk, hike, and bicycle. This is one of the few parks that are at the same level as the beach no cliffs. You can hear the waves crashing of the shore day and night. Only draw back about Refugio is not having a dump station. Since there is no hookups you need to be mindful of you water use if in a motorhome or trailer. There is a nice basketball court with solar chargers for phones or tablets using your own USB cord. We camped at Refugio State Beach in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

Swimming, surfing, kayaking, fishing, hiking, walking, bicycling. Try to remember to bring everything you will need there are no places to shop close by. You can buy fire wood from the camp host. There is a store that makes sandwiches but it's only open on weekends.

Overall Rating:

We love going to Refugio SB, clean and quiet park especially after school in back in. We always stay in site #27, which has a good view of the beach and ocean. This park is nice because the park is level with the beach no cliffs in the way or stairs needed to get to the beach. Park is well maintained and clean. Didn't use restrooms or showers, from looking in they appear to be clean. This year they replaced all the picnic tables with new wooden ones. Like watching the surfers surfing at the point and local school kids learning how to kayak. There is a lot of areas to hike and bike. When we were here last spring we seen several whales migrating north close to shore. We were in a 35-footer. We camped at Refugio State Beach in a Motorhome.

Refugio is a beautiful beach quite and clean. Lots of places to walk you pets. Our site 27 has a good view of the ocean and can watch the surfers at the point from our site. There were several empty site the week we stayed. There is a camp store but never have seen it open, wasn't open the week we stayed last October either. Probably just open on weekends. We were in a 35 ft RV so there's only a few sites that will fit us. We will be back in the fall. We camped at Refugio State Beach in a Motorhome.

Overall Rating:

We spent two nights here. Maybe because there are no hookups, I would estimate that this park was 90% tent campers. They did not appear to be enforcing the 8 campers per site rule when we were there. The beach is rocky and the water was a murky brown color. It was not inviting for a swim or even to sit and look at. Campfires and BBQs were going most of the time. Both AT&T & Verizon connections were spotty. We will not stay here again especially at the current state park rates. We camped at Refugio State Beach in a Motorhome.

Overall Rating:

This is a beautiful park right on the ocean. It is also near the highway and the train tracks, so as others have stated it can be noisy. Premium sites (by the day use area and at the end of each row near the ocean) are $45/night. Some sites are tight, and others can fit two rigs easily in them. Generator run times are a little strange and for the most part they were observed by all (10am to 8pm only), but some had noisy generators start at off times and were not enforced by the hosts. Making changes to your site or days is a mess as they have no access to the ReserveAmerica site. They tell you to pay to cancel your reservation and book one day at a time (the reason I gave them an 8). Maybe it's just the state, but they seemed really inflexible especially at this time of year. Overall was a great stay, nice beach walking and bike ride to El Capitan (path is washed out 1/2 way, but you can go to the beach). We will be back. We camped at Refugio State Beach in a Motorhome.

The campground is nice, but the rules aren't enforced. Dogs that barked all day long. Cars parked in places that they shouldn't, like on the grass at the bike and camp area. Showers were clean but no hot water. We will come back again because we enjoy camping here. We camped at Refugio State Beach in a Travel Trailer.

Overall Rating:

This state park campground is right by the ocean. Unfortunately it's also right by Highway 101, so the traffic noise and train noise was loud all night (even with ear plugs). The sites have fire pits, picnic tables, grass and trees. Most of them looked level and were large widthwise, but not always lengthwise. A newer bathhouse was cleaner and nicer than an older one, but overall neither was as clean as the one we used at San Simeon (and that was a Saturday night as opposed to a Wednesday, go figure). There were a lot of tent campers. The park only allows generators between 10 a.m. and 8 p.m., which makes preparing breakfast difficult. We camped at Refugio State Beach in a Motorhome.

Overall Rating:

The beach here is beautiful. If you are lucky enough to get a spot (they book up 6 months in advance), enjoy the ocean. The sites are nothing exciting, very old pavement, more like gravel and no hookups, dump station, etc. There is a great bike path that goes from Refugio State Park to El Capitan State Park about 2.5 miles away that has beautiful views. We camped at Refugio State Beach in a Motorhome.
