We stayed at this beautiful park Oct 15, 16 after failing to find an empty spot at another park. On our first pass through at Elk Prairie, we got a little worried because many of the sites are shady and narrow due to the massive redwoods, mossy trees, huge ferns and narrow roads. Some sites are partially paved and dirt, many not level, but we grabbed one of the larger sites where we pulled in next to a massive fern and managed to block up to level. Best not to attempt if you are more than 25'. It was very cool and dark under the trees and our solar panels were starved for sunlight. No ATT signal, you could hook up to wifi for free at the visitor center near the entrance to the park. The elk, of course, were ever present near the prairies along the Newton Drury Parkway which fronts the camp. There is plenty of parking and many cars stop along the parkway to watch the animals and take photos. A herd of "bachelors" hung out in the fields closer to the camp and there was a herd of cows and younger ones with a large bull at a field less than a mile away. They were very slow moving and seemed rather accustomed to people, but you are warned repeatedly not to approach them. If you want to see elk, this is the place. The were 2 showers each for women and men, the handicapped one was larger. Also flush toilets at the bath house. The showers got hot after 2 quarters, and were private and clean. You can pick up an envelope and deposit your camping fee at the building near the bathhouse, next to the camp host trailer. Folks were really nice and they have lots of helpful information about the trails and local attractions. Hiking is really beautiful here, everywhere. Giant redwoods, tall ferns, mossy. We camped at Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park - Elk Prairie Campground in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

We biked from Elk Prairie Campground to Davison Trail, Strelow Creek and up the western part of Davison Road to the Gold Bluffs Beach Campground on the California Coastal Trail to check it out. On the way back to Prairie Elk we tackled Davison Road. Yikes!! quite a challenge on a bicycle. We were rewarded at the bottom of the hill with a herd of elk in the field at the Prairie Creek Day Use are. What a sight!

No hookups We drove up the Redwood Highway and stayed at the Elk Prairie Campground in this beautiful State Park. There is another campground on the ocean, but it is more primitive and the roads are not all paved to get to it. Elk Prairie has some very nice sites along the Prairie Creek but since they have had a lot of rain this past winter some sites were a little muddy. Our site backed up to the creek and it was private with water and trash disposal within walking distance. There are many hikes in the park from the campground and along the scenic ten mile drive where the huge Redwoods line the road with pullouts. The park itself has a bathhouse with pay showers, Visitor Center and a huge meadow where the Roosevelt Elk can be spotted eating. This is one of the best places to spot these Elk. We did not see any when we checked in around noon but at 5 and 7 there were about 11 Elk feeding. When we walked back from our site at 7 the Elk were so close to the campground road that a number of German Tourists were clicking away and got some great shots. So glad we stopped for an overnight and we could have spent many more days here. We camped at Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park - Elk Prairie Campground in a Motorhome.

Beautiful area surround by redwoods and a stream nearby. Bathrooms are clean as are the showers. There are also 2 accessible restrooms that include showers. There is a large meadow where elk graze. Alongside the meadow are wooden benches perfect for watching the animals. We camped at Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park - Elk Prairie Campground in a Truck Camper.

Great place -- agree with prior reviews. Quiet, green, lush trees and bushes. But do not bring a big rig here -- very narrow roads, low branches, small campsites. Also, campsites can be very muddy -- bring something to wipe your feet on, like an astroturf mat. We camped at Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park - Elk Prairie Campground in a Travel Trailer.

What a beautiful campground! This is truly one of the best we've ever experienced. Most sites are quite private being surrounded by shrubs and trees. Some sites are difficult to back into with a travel trailer. The shower and restroom facilities are very clean. This area provides stands of old growth redwoods with excellent hiking and walking trails, and, of course, you have the elk in the meadows. There are two upper loops. The loop on the right has several sites that will fit my 31' trailer. The lower loops are for RVs under 24'. I had to drive around the large loop twice, and it is not designed as a drive around loop. I had to drive back and forward several times to get around one corner. It is a meadow setting, so no rocks or trees to hamper backing into site. Good south sun for solar panels. Camp road is paved. Nice showers and restrooms, fairly new. Very quiet, no highway noise. We enjoyed our stay here, especially with the elk coming right down to the camping sites. The attendant in the visitor's center was particularly helpful. The cost was high, however, for a state park with no utilities. And the prohibition from dogs on any of the paths made the stay difficult for us with our pets. Although the only sites indicated for RVs were in the open near the meadow, we found many sites down in the trees that would be fine even with my friend's 32' Class C. We stayed at Elk Prairie Campground, one of several in the state park (the fee of $7.50 for a reservation is not included in the above price). This is a great state park with beach access and redwoods access, plenty of big trees, campfire programs, elk meadows. Our site, 42, had a secluded picnic table and fire pit. There are a lot of low-hanging trees around. Maximum camper length is 27 feet. The restrooms have hot water and the showers are coin-operated but quite modern. Nice visitors center.
