We live only about an hour from Orland Buttes so it is a short trip for an easy 3-4 day stay. A really great place spring and fall but the summer months are way too hot there for outdoor relaxation. This year we were there during the week preceding Memorial Day and had the entire campground to ourselves. No boat noise on the lake and we logged 35 bird species just sitting in our lawn chairs. But, we noted every camp spot was reserved for the holiday weekend and I imagine it would have been a very different experience had we stayed. A very cordial campground host makes things good too. We camped at Orland Buttes Campground / Black Butte Lake COE in a Travel Trailer.

Tips for other Campers:

Many sites are more than 100' from a potable water spigot and you should fully fill your tank before you unhook unless you have LOTS of hose.

This is the second of two campgrounds on Black Butte Lake. It has a reputation for being less rowdy than the other one, which is closer to the lake and more on a level with the lake. This one is on a bluff overlooking the lake, but there is a fence on the steep hill that would get you down to the lake. Frankly, I think even if you could get around the fence (I did not check if this were possible), it would be a very hard climb back up. So don't plan on swimming here, even if it looks close to the lake on a map! I was here on a weekday in spring, so there was only one other camper other than me, so I was able to pick a campsite that was long enough and level. Many of the sites were short and not level, so I would not recommend them for big rigs. Also, most of the pull-thrus were just wide spots on the roadway, so I am not sure I would want to be here during hot and busy summer times. As it was, this was a good experience because it was empty and very quiet, and I had a good view of the lake. Three-four bars of Verizon data, also. Also, trees would make it very difficult to get satellite unless you had a portable unit. We camped at Orland Buttes Campground / Black Butte Lake COE in a Motorhome.

The rate reflects a 50% senior discount. This is a Corp of Engineer Campground, one of two on Black Butte Lake, the other being Buckhorn Campground. Buckhorn campground is open year-round; whereas Orland Buttes is closed during the winter (currently the first part of September until around the first of April). There are no hook-ups, but there is a dump station. Fresh potable water is available from three threaded faucets in the campground loops. There is some shade and some sites out in the open. There are only a few sites where satellite is possible. Only a few sites have a view of the lake. Only about half of the sites are suitable for RV’s and of those only a few are very level. There are a very few sites where a larger rig would fit. The campground does take reservations but the times that we have been there we have not had any reservations and it has not been an issue. There is a campground host that is very nice and helpful. The terrain is rolling hills with, primarily, oak trees. There are some hiking trails around the lake and some great biking on the country roads around the campground. One great ride is from the campground to Grisly Flats. The campground is very pleasant, nicely quiet, especially during the week, and dark. Our Verizon phone and data card worked well. We have stayed here twice and will likely stay here again when in the area. We camped at Orland Buttes Campground / Black Butte Lake COE in a Motorhome.
