Overall Rating:

This is a beautiful campground way off the beaten path. The road to the campground has numerous pot holes and and at points is nearly single lane; be forewarned. Also watch for the signs going in, because they are easy to miss. The sites are fairly level, asphalt and surrounded by tall pines. There is a fair amount of room between campsites and large meadows behind most of the campsites. It was very quiet while we were there. There are no showers; all the bathrooms are fairly clean with pit toilets. There is water from spigots around the campground; we were told that filling your fresh water tank directly from a spigot is forbidden (and if a ranger sees you doing it you can be fined); this may be related to the current California drought. If you arrive with an empty fresh water tank, you can fill up a water container and pour it into your tank but depending on the size of your container, this could take a number of trips and be pretty exhausting (remember a gallon of water weighs 8.3 lbs so a 6 gallon container will weigh nearly 50 lbs.) The lake is very close by and you can launch non-powered water craft at the beach. We didn't do any fishing, but I would assume it is good. There is a trail that goes around the lake; you can hike it in about an hour; if you're adventurous, you could do it on a mountain bike. There were no mosquitoes while we were there but some yellow jacket wasps. One thing that was a surprise: we were camped under some very tall pines and squirrels would drop pine cones on the top of our trailer, often from a considerable height. This was something we had never experienced before; made a loud noise but no damage. There is a visitor information center, but no one was there and there is no camp host. They have a map of the site when you drive in, but no maps that you can take with you (you can download one from the USDA site: http://www.fs.usda.gov/Internet/FSE_DOCUMENTS/fsbdev7_018799.pdf) We camped at Wrights Lake Campground USFS in a Travel Trailer.

Tips for other Campers:

Just relax; you are very far from civilization. We have Verizon and there was no service while we were there. Campers told us there are some spots where they were able to get reception. Can't vouch for that.
