This campground is unsuitable for any RV much larger than a popup because of the numerous large trees adjoining and overhanging the roads and campsites. The site descriptions at recreation.gov were measured at bumper height and do not provide clearance from the large overhanging tree branches. Even after walking the roadway to make sure I could exit the campground, I was still unable to use the road without damaging my 30 foot fifth-wheel. To get out at all, I had to back up against traffic around a curve. Apparently the Forestry Service will not allow the concession employees to remove the offending trees and branches and refuse to do it themselves. Large tree limbs are left under the trees they fell from, and large boulders are intentionally placed to restrict the amount of area in the small sites. In addition to the large trees actually touching the edge of the road, large wooden posts line the edge of the narrow pavement which restricts the ability of tow vehicles to maneuver a trailer. One of the bathrooms has been out of service for months and apparently there is no money available to repair it. If you are a tent camper or have a popup-type RV, this is a quiet campground with plenty of shade, a roaming flock of wild turkeys and very nice camp hosts. Interagency Pass holders pay half price camping fees. We camped at Los Prietos Campground in a Fifth Wheel.

Overall Rating:

Los Prietos is a beautiful National Forest Campground. Tucked in the hillside and under wonderful oak trees. The campground itself is decently maintained and the camp hosts are always going around checking the bathrooms etc. the roadway asphalt is a bit worn but still useable. Our hosts warned us about the site size vs my 34 foot rv but I got in with minimal effort. The spots are large enough to feel apart from the other campers but still close enough to know you are in a campground. The turkeys are a nice extra.

We stayed in camp all weekend playing and adventuring the grounds themselves and never got bored. We camped at Los Prietos Campground in a Motorhome.

Dry camped over night. Self serve, put our money in an envelope. Water taps can be found. Bathrooms were crude and loaded with gnats & flies. Isolated campsite but it was tranquil walking around. Unlevel sites but lots of trees. Good on the budget and within about 12 miles from Santa Barbara. We camped at Los Prietos Campground in a Travel Trailer.

Date of Stay: September, 2009 - $16.00
Overall Rating:

This is an oak studded, slightly sloped campground, relatively spacious, and we'd rate it a 10, except for two major problems. The restrooms stink, not just when you are in them, but anywhere nearby. There are four different restroom buildings, and they are all the same. The other problem is the campground host has two large dogs tied up outside and another inside his trailer. They barked on and off all night. We didn't sleep at all. The campground is lovely, but the restrooms need major repair/air freshening and the host needs to control his animals. One more note: this campground is not in Santa Ynez. It has a Santa Barbara zip code, but it is physically located between the towns of Santa Ynez and Santa Barbara. We camped at Los Prietos Campground in a Motorhome.

Overall Rating:

We loved this little place and will definitely go back. The sites were huge and shaded by beautiful oak trees. We had two side-by-side sites and had more than enough room between us to put up a tent for another family. The bathrooms were clean and the camp hosts were awesome - they run a tight ship and it shows. We camped at Los Prietos Campground in a Travel Trailer.

Located in the Los Padres National Forest off of the San Marcos Pass road (hwy. 154), then East at Paradise Rd. THIS CAMPGROUND IS NOT BIG RIG FRIENDLY. We're 35' and there is a tight squeeze between 2 trees. Not for the faint of heart!! Nice campground with plenty of shade in the summer. Weekends are nut,s but during the week it stays pretty quiet. Very close to the Santa Ynez river, (across the road). Red Rock day use area (further up Paradise Rd.) is great for the kids to swim and float on rafts. Many areas along the river to picnic and find swimming holes. Have been coming to this area for over 40 years and really enjoy time here. Wild turkeys wander in and out of the campsites looking for a handout. Water spigots throughout the campground and they have bathrooms. There is normally a campground host here. There's a store at the beginning of Paradise Rd. where they serve food and you can eat outside. Ice, beer, groceries, the normal stuff you might run out of while camping. Buy gas in Santa Barbara, but if you need to fill up there's Cachuma Lake Co. Park or the town of Solvang to the north. We camped at Los Prietos Campground in a Motorhome.
