We had a great time while we were there. We hiked to the waterfall and it was amazing. We met a lot of friendly people. The food was good. We camped at Rancho Oso RV & Camping Resort in a Motorhome.

We stayed here as Thousand Trails members. Nice park in a beautiful setting. Like many TT parks, its more campground that RV resort. Our site, on the uppermost terrace was level with good power and water pressure. The view was outstanding with wild turkeys roaming about. Some full time residents but few, if any, kept messy sites. The staff were all friendly and helpful. There is a small store on site for essentials. The only real downsides were the lack of cell signal, no usable wifi and the 20 mile drive to Santa Barbara for...well, for just about everything. But other than that, nothing to complain about and you couldn't ask for a prettier setting. We camped at Rancho Oso RV & Camping Resort in a Motorhome.

This is one of the nicer Thousand Trails parks. It is built on the side of a hill, with the sites 'terraced'. The park has an interesting history and is a working horse ranch. Sites are flat. We had no trouble obtaining satellite. Verizon internet is sketchy, and a WiFi booster is needed. There is internet at the Adult Lodge. Verizon phone is okay. Sites are close, but manageable. Activities on the weekends, including great breakfasts on Fri, Sat, and Sun. Ice cream sundaes on Sat. afternoon. Nice pools and spa. Nice camp store. Dinner on Sat. is tasty, but a bit expensive. Staff are friendly and helpful. The down side of this park is the drive to it. It is located about 16 miles from Santa Barbara, uphill. The last mile into the park is a narrow road, but minimal traffic, so it is manageable. Scary the first time driving it, but better once you have done that last mile more than once. We will stay here again as the resort is close to Santa Barbara, Solvang, and many vineyards. We camped at Rancho Oso RV & Camping Resort in a Motorhome.

Lots to do in the area. Santa Barbara is 16 miles. Solvang is in the opposite direction on Hwy 154. Many vineyards to visit. Costco north of Santa Barbara. No Walmart in the area, but several grocery stores in Santa Barbara and Solvang. Breakfast at the park on weekend is excellent.

Too far from civilization unless that's your objective. Didn't book early enough to get a sewer site so we squeezed our 42' MH into the turkey section. It's the short term, semi-wooded camper section overrun with wild turkeys. We're fulltimers and would never have chosen this park except it was a Thousand Trails park, our first. Strike one. Gorgeous drive to the park. Treacherous drive the last five miles for our rig - or, for anyone coming our way. Not fun. If we were going there to relax in one of the non-descript sewer sites for a couple of weeks, it would have been fine. It's also a stressful drive to Santa Barbara. We camped at Rancho Oso RV & Camping Resort in a Motorhome.

Absolutely STUNNING and relaxing. Cleanest Bath areas I've experienced in Thousand Trails system! Horses (including Riding stables), cows and scenery that can only be seen, to truly appreciate. Lots of kid friendly things. Pool (s) Hot tub and C-Store. Propane, ice and limited dry goods. Lots of souvenirs. Mail accepted for FREE! With that being said... 2 concerns... 1) Narrow entrance road and most of it is singlelane only. The unwritten rule is LEAVE before 11 am - ARRIVE after 1 pm. NO CELL OR DATA unless you have a booster and/or you go to Adult Lodge ( which is painfully slow!) We have ATT, and Verizon, Sprint and others no work either. PS Remember that you are in California, public lands, parks, museums, beaches and attractions cost $$$ here, so be prepared. We had Grandkids wih us, for 2 weeks, and never had to leave property. We camped at Rancho Oso RV & Camping Resort in a Motorhome.

Last 1.7 mile in was hilly and crooked. Luckily we did not meet anyone coming or going in the last section. The park is about 7 miles off of CA 154 and there is a long climb coming from the south and a long downhill heading south on 154. The park is terraced and very hilly so you just about have to drive anywhere not on your row. The cell service (Verizon) was spotty. I somehow received 3 calls with almost no bars. Texting out would sometimes work and sometimes not. In the Adult Lounge my phone had 3 bars if I sat at a table close to a booster but if I got a few feet away there was no service. They planned to turn off the water at 9 AM to repair a leak and posted a notice on everyone's door the day before. The next day they turned the water off at 9 AM and were going door to door notifying people the water was off after the turnoff. We camped at Rancho Oso RV & Camping Resort in a Travel Trailer.

Stearn's Wharf is interesting and there is free parking on the street near there and on the wharf for 2 or so hours. There are electric buses that take you along the waterfront to the marina and also another one that takes you downtown where you can go to the courthouse. The courthouse has an observation deck, guided tours. a clock room in the clock tower and a room filled with murals.

Secure and clean. Getting to the actual campground was a long and winding road as it is nestled in a valley so don't get nervous - we felt like we had missed a turn when all of the sudden there was a sign! Their sites are stadium style so being at the top was great, no neighbors on one side. They were having a pasta dinner then a pancake breakfast during our stay so they do try to get the community together. The horses on site were beautiful and the bathrooms were clean. No concrete pad, gravel and dirt so a bit messy but OK. We camped at Rancho Oso RV & Camping Resort in a Motorhome.

Overall Rating:

Beautiful location in the Los Padres National Forest. It was an original land grant and sold by the original grant holder to 1000 Trails. Nicely maintained and lots of things to do right in the park or close by. On weekends they serve various meals. We were only here on week days.

We were on the hillside and though we had room for our 33 ft. 5th wheel, the back, past the levelers, was hanging off the hill! We felt safe enough but couldn't walk around the back of the rig.

Only two negatives. The first is the scary last mile into the park. It is a private road and often times is only one lane. It is narrow and twisty!

State Highway 154 is doable by RVs. A few steep grades but just keep the speed down and you are fine. The 2nd negative for us (others may be happy to be unplugged) was the complete lack of a Verizon cell and data signal. We were able to get a Direct TV sat signal. We would definitely come back! We camped at Rancho Oso RV & Camping Resort in a Fifth Wheel.

Date of Stay: February, 2016 - $1.00
Overall Rating:

The park is very nice, there are good facilities, and good amount of things to do.
However, the road in is challenging. Even though we had called the ranger station before starting the 1.25 mile narrow entry road, and were assured that no one was on their way out, a pickup and horse trailer met us just as we came around the last curve on the way down into the campground. It became obvious that the person driving the pickup towing the horse trailer was not comfortable backing it up, and since we had our toad attached (and an additional pickup with 5th wheel and two other vehicles behind us), it took quite a while to get it resolved. Eventually (after there were an additional 4 vehicles stuck behind the horse trailer), two of the campground rangers came up, a driver of one of the vehicles behind the horse trailer managed to maneuver it backwards and towards the side of the road, and we all got through.

The other negative for us was that internet and cellphone service, even with Verizon and a cellular booster, is marginal at best. We were about midway up the hill; it may have been better if we had parked on the top row. In the Adult Lodge, it is better, but still not wonderful.

Be aware that the Garmin RV GPS may route you to avoid route 154 (it has a truck warning for trucks more than 30' from kingpin to rear axle). The alternatives that the Garmin suggests look to be much worse (the Garmin indicates "RV Accessibility Unknown" on the routes it recommends, instead of routing you on 154 which it thinks could be a problem). The campground information recommended that we use 154, and we are glad we did (there were no problems for our 43' bus on 154 - the problems occurred on the narrow entry road to the campground).

Rate reflects Thousand Trails membership. We camped at Rancho Oso RV & Camping Resort in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

Both Santa Barbara and Solvang are 30-45 minutes away. Stock up on supplies before heading to the campground.
There is a free bucking bull and herding dog demonstration on Saturday morning at the arena which was very entertaining and educational. The campground has available for purchase: spaghetti dinner on Friday night, BBQ dinner on Saturday night, and breakfast Saturday and Sunday mornings. The wine tasting on Saturday afternoon was enjoyable.

This is a great place to stay when visiting Santa Barbara or as a destination for some much needed R&R. I stayed in one of the full hook up sites on the hill. Plenty of room. The space is a rustic ranch style setting with lots to do and see. Amenities include 2 pools, in ground spa, adult lodge, family lodge, a small store and even optional horse back riding. Beware the road leading down to the park is a narrow winding one lane (at times) road (approx 1 mile) and it may be difficult to maneuver if you had to pass someone else while entering or leaving the park. Have stayed here several times using our TT membership and always enjoy ourselves. Park was busy this time around with most every site be taken. We used this Park as a staging area for attending the "Vinter's Wine Festival" in Buellton and had a wonderful time. Very friendly staff and always quiet here. We will stay here again and again. We are Thousand Trails Zone Pass members and have stayed in several Thousand Trails parks. We were not particularly impressed with this park. Most other reviewers mention the difficulty on the narrow winding road with blind curves going in and out of the park, so we disconnected our toad before going in, but DH says even with our 38' motor home we could have stayed connected and been okay. There are mirrors on all the blind curves and there is only one spot where two rigs could not pass. The long steep grades on the highway getting over the passes are bigger issues for the driver. The park was dusty, there is very little shade available at the sites, and most are a long steep walk to and from the amenities. The pools were open and one was heated a little bit, but full of leaves. We didn't use the amenities, and never even visited the lodges because of the dust and steep hill to walk there. Sites were spacious enough, and we loved the quiet (silence) and dark skies at night. The location and entry road make this a difficult location to use as base camp to visit Santa Barbara, Solvang, and other areas of interest. We would not stay here again. We camped at Rancho Oso RV & Camping Resort in a Motorhome.

Overall Rating:

The $10 rate reflects the RPI rate. This park is outside of Santa Barbara about 15 miles on CA route 154 "up" the mountain, then there is another 5 miles before you reach the entrance to the park. Then you have a couple of miles of "very curvy" road to the check-in gate. The sites are gravel/dirt back-in with full hookups, a picnic table, and some have a shade tree. The middle of Sept was quite hot, into the upper 90s, so a shade tree was nice to have. The pool area is gorgeous with a lot of trees, two pools and a spa as well as a general store. There is also a historic stone lodge that is used for gatherings as well as TV watching. There are a lot of hiking/horseback riding trails. A drive down to the Santa Barbara pier is about 25 miles, back down the mountain. They do offer group meals and other amenities on the weekends. We camped at Rancho Oso RV & Camping Resort in a Motorhome.

Overall Rating:

This is a great park, handy to Santa Barbara and the Ynez valley. Although there were no pull thrus, the back in sites were easy to manage with plenty of turning space. The restrooms were clean. There is WiFi (not the greatest) in the adult lodge and some of it spills into the nearest campsites. We took advantage of local hiking, bicycling, and organized activities like the stock demonstration and wine tasting right on site. The pool and hot tub are beautifully surrounded by trees. The only downside is the narrow road within the ranch that takes you to the campsites. It is very narrow and very winding with three corners that have big convex mirrors to help you see around. It is quite nerve-wracking with a big RV. On-coming traffic can best be avoided by checking in late in the afternoon and leaving early in the morning. We camped at Rancho Oso RV & Camping Resort in a Fifth Wheel.

There are a lot of great things about this RV park. It is quiet, the man at the gate was very nice. Our grand daughter took the horse back ride and loved it. The girl leading the horses was really great. The RV spots are large, but dirt, there was no privacy plants between the spots. There were bottle caps and garbage that wasn't cleaned up when we arrived at our spot. I never saw anyone cleaning up the RV spots. The pool area was clean and the pools were very nice. The last 1.3 miles was a one way road. There were 3 switch backs that you couldn't see around and they had mirrors that the driver coming down could see if there was someone coming, however the person coming up had no clue if there was someone in their path. We were towing a toad and it would have been hard for us to back up. Rancho Oso wants people leaving to use the road in the morning and the ones coming in to use it in the afternoon. That sorta of works but every time I used the road and met someone however not at the switch backs. I don't think my husband wants to drive that 1.3 miles again. As far as cell phone use you can go into the lodge, which is very nice and they have a booster and I was able to get an AT&T signal. We camped at Rancho Oso RV & Camping Resort in a Motorhome.
