Shelter Cove is location, location, location. It is right on the coast and drop dead gorgeous. It is only about 30 miles from highway 101 (Redway) but it is a slow drive. Road is good but narrow with many tight turns including a few hairpins and a steep descent from the mountains. Use low gear! It took us an hour and a half to do the 30 miles in a 38’ class A towing a dingy. The park itself has full hookups but otherwise is minimal. Sites are close together on dirt with few trees and not level. But the view is fantastic. It sits right next to the community runway and occasionally small private aircraft take off or land but only during the day. Lots of fishermen (and women) and surfers as that is the main attraction here. No Wi-Fi and cell coverage (Verizon) is weak. Travel caution – the road between Shelter Cove and north to Ferndale (the Lost Coast) is terrible. The road itself is in horrible condition with dirt in a few spots. And since the pavement is in such terrible condition, the dirt is better. Many, many tight turns with many very tight hairpin switchbacks steep both up and down. We had to disconnect twice on hairpins. Speed is usually under 25 MPH and one still bounces all over the place. The drive is just not worth it. The view is nothing to speak of. Only a short view of the coast. Much better views can be had at Shelter Cove or Ferndale. We camped at Shelter Cove RV Park & Campground in a Motorhome.

First of all, the 22 mile drive from Hwy 101 to this place is a real nail biter, especially pulling a 35 foot trailer. This town is a fishing village and if you don't fish ( we didn't) there is nothing to do. Campground is dismal as there are really no designated sites. No trees. We did not use the facilities except laundry and the washer and dryer were very old and rusty. Weather cold and foggy. We planned on staying for 6 nights but left after 3. Never again. We camped at Shelter Cove RV Park & Campground in a Fifth Wheel.

The road in and out is a real tricky one, slow and easy. You're dropping to sea level here folks; those are mountains you came from! This is as rugged a get-away-from-it-all campground as you will find with accessability. A gorgeous BLACK SAND beach, nice owner, great fishing and tremendous beach combing and birding. Stayed a week and HAD to leave but WILL return. If you are into remote beaches, THIS IS IT and fairly easy to get to. We camped at Shelter Cove RV Park & Campground in a Fifth Wheel.

If you can traverse the steep and harrowing road to Shelter Cove, the reward is the nearly 180* view of the Pacific Ocean from the RV park. The owner and hosts were friendly and accommodating, generous with firewood, and entertained us with fishing stories and the local color. Located next to the airstrip, the view is unobstructed and only occasionally interrupted by small aircraft. We saw whales spouting from our campsite! The lighthouse park and the Shelter Cove black-sand beach are short walks from the park. The park includes an on-site deli and store with great fish and chips and cinnamon rolls. The laundry room could use a new washer/dryer as the salt air has taken its toll on the old appliances. We camped at Shelter Cove RV Park & Campground in a Travel Trailer.
