GPS coordinates: 17.48808N, 92.03781 W. Maya Bell is a magical place, close to the magnificent Palenque ruins. Combis (taxi vans) drive up and down the stretch between the campground and Palenque all day, so it’s a breeze to catch a ride for 10 pesos/person. The RV park has a pool fed by a jungle stream, which was cold and refreshing in the humid heat. From the poolside, you can see amazing fish in the stream, but the filters keep the wildlife out. The bathrooms and showers are nice, although the ones by the pool were locked. Don’t be alarmed by the roaring at night: It’s just the howler monkeys. My kids loved the rope swing. Although the Church’s book (RV Camping in Mexico) says that this is not a park for big rigs, it was not nearly as tight as we were afraid. We were able to back our 38-foot trailer into a space fairly easily. We saw several good-sized Class As and Fifth Wheels that were also able to park. However, the ground gets a little soft when it rains. Since it rains all the time (you’re in a jungle), that can be a problem. Maya Bell also has a hotel, restaurant, tent camping, a sweat lodge, and massage therapy—not to mention a collection of colorful characters. One warning: Maya Bell is inside the national park area, and you have to pay admission before you arrive at the campground. The toll booth is closed in the evening, although the road remains open. So, if you go run an errand, you might have to pay to return to the campground: We never quite figured out the rules, and nothing explicit was posted. Some confusion exists about the spelling of the campground name. Some people spell it “Mayabell” as one word, but the sign outside the resort says, “Maya Bell.” Our rate was 300 pesos/night. We camped at Maya Bell Campground in a Travel Trailer.
