This is a typical US Forest Service campground. Beautiful location, low price, no amenities. The campground is built in an aspen grove, a few miles outside of Aspen. As things go, it's probably the cheapest place to sleep near Aspen. Most of the people at the campground when we were there were there for a concert in town. Regardless, it was nice. Beautiful. Quiet. Sites were mostly level, a combination of gravel and dirt, with picnic table and fire pit. I would say no big rigs because the sites are pretty small and it's heavily forested, but the guy next door managed to get a 5th wheel in and out somehow. By himself. I have no idea how he did it. Vault toilets. Drinking water. The website said drinking water only, but they did have a hose for filling fresh water tanks. The camphost was friendly and helpful. Cell reception was nonexistent. We camped at Difficult Campground in a Motorhome.

The hosts here are great and run a nice clean and organized campground. There is a place to fill water but no dump station. It is in a great location to explore the Aspen area and the surrounding national forest. I would be back again for sure if in the area. We camped at Difficult Campground in a Travel Trailer.

Overall Rating:

Difficult Campground is a Forest Service campground located a few miles outside of Aspen along Independence Pass. It is well below the 35' vehicle length restriction portion of the pass so long as you approach it from the Aspen side. Don't let your GPS try to route you over the pass when driving to Aspen! The campground is situated in a steep valley filled with aspen trees. Most sites are somewhat sloped and have partial shade. We had to use about 4 lynx levelers to level side to side, but some sites were better about that. The pit toilets were clean and well maintained. The campground host was considerate when he stopped by. Do use the provided bear boxes at each site to store coolers and food. We stayed 2 nights, and would be happy to stay there again. We camped at Difficult Campground in a Travel Trailer.

Tips for other Campers:

Visit the ghost towns of Ashcroft and Independence, go see Maroon Bells, drive to the top of Independence Pass if it is open (Jun-Sep).

This place is stunningly beautiful. Roaring fork river was about 50 yards from our site making beautiful music 24/7. There are only vault toilets, three on our loop, and only one smelled bad enough that you didn't want to use it. Sites were reasonably clean. Online reservation system is easy to use but be advised someone will knock on the door and ask you to fill out paperwork. If in a motorhome, fifth wheel or pull behind choose your site carefully. Not all will accommodate bigger rigs. Tent anywhere. Sites had tables, bear boxes and fire rings, firewood available for purchase. We camped at Difficult Campground in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

Loved this place but be aware there are zilch for hookups. You need to be self sufficient. This is boondocking in the best possible way. City Market in Aspen is well stocked with high end eats. Bought a wheel of Epoisse to enhance our stay here.

Overall Rating:

Although Hiway 82 runs along the cliff above the campground, you can hardly hear it, except for the occasional motorcycle. There are some sites nearer to the creek, which helps with the sound as well. Some sites are very narrow. Lots of shade. Camp hosts were pleasant but were having trouble communicating with the internet reservation folks, so we occupied a site (no reservation) and then had to move a day later because the hosts did not know that someone else was coming in. No big deal, but kind of a minor hassle. Campground is ten minutes east of Aspen and about a half hour from Maroon Bells. We camped at Difficult Campground in a Travel Trailer.

Tips for other Campers:

There is a lot to do in the area east of the campground -- great hiking in the high country near Independence Pass. But do not take a trailer or a big rig on the road east of the campground, even if you are under the 35 foot limit. The road is very narrow in places. Some folks do take trailers on that road -- I would not.

Overall Rating:

A typical older forest service campground, Difficult Campground was challenging to navigate with our 35-foot 5th wheel. Many of the sites are overgrown and many are far from level. The camp hosts are terrific and helpful, though, and the location and setting are terrific. This is the closest campground to Aspen and is better for larger RVs than the other nearby campgrounds. We had zero cell/data reception here and had to go to Aspen (5 miles away) to check email, etc. We camped at Difficult Campground in a Fifth Wheel.

Overall Rating:

We stayed at Difficult Campground for two nights while visiting the Aspen area. This is a typical National Forest Campground with vault toilets, no showers or other services. The bathrooms were clean and well cared for. The camp hosts were helpful and accommodating on check-in. I was there over the weekend following the 4th of July and had reserved in advance, which turned out to be a good thing as the campground was full. We were in a large pull-through site that left ample room for the trailer and truck. The campsites are relatively isolated from each other and are quite large. Due to fire danger in Colorado, no fires were allowed, though each campsite has a firepit and picnic table. We were very pleased with the campground and its proximity to Aspen. We camped at Difficult Campground in a Travel Trailer.

Lots of secluded sites for very private camping. Some road construction going on at entrance, not easy to navigate into, had to circle around a neighborhood first. Water was across the street and although there is no bathing or dish washing at the water pipe, I didn't expect to get reprimanded for wetting my toothbrush on my way back to camp. Beautiful area though, and close to Aspen and a gorgeous drive up to Continental Divide if you're heading that way. Amazing area, average campground. We camped at Difficult Campground in a Tent.
