We were looking for a CG that would be convenient to exploring the Black Canyon of the Gunnison NP and would have electric since morning temps were forecasted to be in the 20's. We're self-contained and don't use the facilities. We stayed mid-week in mid-October in our 25 foot MH. This is a pleasant campground near the Visitor Center and central to all South Rim activity. There are 3 loops in a forest of tall shrubs. Sites are similar in each loop. B loop has electric. Loop C is first come first serve. Water is not available after temps drop below freezing. Limited water is available in summer - plan to arrive with water. There is no dump station. There is one in Montrose which we did not use. We stayed in loop B. Most of the sites are back in with a few pull overs. The CG map denotes S, M and L sites. Sites are dirt and most need some leveling. The shrubs provide some privacy. There's no wifi and no cell coverage in the CG. The nearest ATT and Verizon signals are at Sunset View and along HYY 347. We camped at South Rim (NPS Campground) in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

The Rim Trail leaves from loop C and is a mile to the Visitor Center where there are rangers to answer questions, an exhibit/movie and short trails to viewpoints. The Scenic Drive is 6 miles with 12 viewpoints. There is river access for vehicles <20 feet at East Portal. Montrose is 14 miles away with all services.

The location of this campground on the South Rim deserves a 10! We were in loop B and had a very long, back-in site with 50 amp service. We have a 40' ft wheel. Backing the rig into the site was a challenge due to trees and posts marking the campsites, but we managed with a little wiggling and patience. We had one of the best sites as we were totally off the road and there was great vegetation around us providing privacy. Many of the pull through sites in that loop are on the road that runs through the campground. It was so tight, that several campers did not fully extend their bumps. There is no dump (there's one in town at the Forest Service Office) and there is no water available to fill tanks. There is water available to fill small jugs. We made sure to fill our tanks before we got there. The road to the campground is steep but fairly easy even when towing a big rig. So I just listed all the problems, but it's a wonderful national park location. The rangers did nightly programs on the history, geology, and animal life. This is a designated dark sky area and the star gazing is outstanding. We toured both rims, North and South. Both provide outstanding views of the canyon. It's about a 90 minute drive from the South Rim to the North Rim from the campground. We camped at South Rim (NPS Campground) in a Fifth Wheel.

We stayed in the south rim campground at Black Canyon NP. Loop B has electric. There is water but it is trucked in so it is limited. The facilities were clean. We stayed in site B12. Sites are separated nicely from others. Site B13 power didn't work so check your power before unhooking your trailer. You can get cell coverage only at high places in the park. We will stay again. We camped at South Rim (NPS Campground) in a Travel Trailer.

If you're coming from the west, Black Canyon is the beginning of the rockies. The south rim of Black Canyon is about 8200 ft, 2500 feet above the valley below. Scrub oak is abundant on the rim of the canyon and in the campground. South Rim campground has small campsites carved into the scrub oak. Sites aren't all that far apart, but the brush makes them seem very private. Sites are smallish, roads are narrow. Nothing here is big rig friendly. Small motorhomes and trailers, though, will find a small gravel parking pad, tent pad, picnic table, and fire pit. There is electricity in loop B, and no generators allowed anywhere in the campground. So if it's the air conditioning season, get a reservation in loop B. Dogs are allowed in the campground, but deer use the campground to raise their fawns, and for much of the summer, dogs are restricted to their own campsite, to keep deer attacks to a minimum. We also had our reservation changed to a different site. There was no explanation about why our site had been "closed," but when we got there, we realized that there were two fawns in the bushes right behind the site. There's no dump station. There's a water thing, but it is only set up for filling bottles and jugs. They truck the water in from the valley. Forget cell service. The closest Verizon we found was at the far end of the scenic drive, or halfway back down the hill to Montrose. We didn't get a proper AT&T signal until we got to Montrose. As far as things to do, the national park is beautiful. There's a hike along the rim that leaves from the campground. There's a scenic drive along the rim, or hikes that go down into the canyon. Down the hill at the river is a recreation area with boating and fishing. We camped at South Rim (NPS Campground) in a Motorhome.

If you are a small camper, it is lovely to wake up in this beautiful place. Sites are far enough apart to feel private, but close enough to vault toilets. Roads are good, sites are gravel and fairly level. The overlooks are great, short hiking trails on most of them. Good place for a couple of days of camping. Not big rig friendly. No water in the park, so no hookups except for 50 amp electric. So you can run your coach. But the trees haven't been cut back far enough, scratched our coach, turns are too tight for our43' bus. I think the NPS website warned us, this was just our mistake. When we talked to Recreation.gov on the phone, they never mentioned that we were too big, and we didn't look past that. We camped at South Rim (NPS Campground) in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

Take the East Portal road (in your car, not your rv) down to the dam at the bottom of the canyon, it's twisty, but worth it, gorgeous views from the bottom looking up those steep walls. The water is beautiful, there are restrooms and picnic area.

The pickings were slim when we got here. Loop B has 50 amp and we managed to find a spot although it took a bit of doing to get the trailer in. Very quiet. Many spaces were available in A and C loops late in the evening. We camped at South Rim (NPS Campground) in a Travel Trailer.

Sites were pull off but fairly easy to get into though be careful of branches. Branches need cut back a bit and we scratched our 5th wheel on them. Overall we found this a good campground for viewing the Black Canyons It was very basic but nice. We enjoyed our stay and would stay here again. We camped at South Rim (NPS Campground) in a Fifth Wheel.

Site was a pull-off shoulder on the B loop but wide enough to keep slideouts off the road. Excellent NP campground, quiet, forested with low oaks and many deer wandering through or even just laying in the grass in the campsites. Bathrooms are pit toilets, water is a single communal spigot near the loop entrance, good 50A electrical hookup. No WIFI or Verizon cell service in the campground. Long uphill pull to get to the park, but worthwhile if visiting the park multiple days. We camped at South Rim (NPS Campground) in a Fifth Wheel.

Tips for other Campers:

Deer can be aggressive and there are special dog rules during the summer... see park website. If you are fit and enjoy a challenge, get a wilderness permit for a scramble down to the Gunnison river from the south rim. Else drive down a steep but good road to East Portal for river access. Montrose is 25 minutes from the park and is a large town will all the usual big box and franchise stores. Camp Robber is a good American restaurant, with killer nachos.

We thought this was a beautiful place to camp. We have a 40' motorhome and found the side parking was easy to get into. We had to maneuver a bit in one spot (B007) that had bushes on the passenger side, but we then were able to get out both sides of the slides. We liked the privacy the bushes provided. We couldn't use our awning, but the picnic table and the grill were on the opposite side of the RV anyway. Felt like we had total privacy sitting over there. Our next spot (B16) was also a side one without the bushes and it felt a bit more exposed, but again with table on opposite side, privacy. We did sink into the ground here too. Could not get level. There is no water, except for a little spigot for some jugs or bottles. There are no showers, no dump station, so be prepared. We did have electric, which was nice. Beautiful scenery, nice easy trails, dark park, great night skies, close to Black Canyon South Rim. It is a steep road for about 3 1/2 miles to get there. We camped at South Rim (NPS Campground) in a Motorhome.

You are inside the park, with mule deer everywhere. Campground was not level (3") and it was so close to the road we couldn't use the driver side slide outs. Electric only, no water, no dump station. They don't sell firewood and you can't collect down dead wood. We camped at South Rim (NPS Campground) in a Fifth Wheel.

We made a reservation in the B loop for our 36ft travel trailer. This site required us to park parallel to the road on the gravel shoulder of the road. Because the road was somewhat narrow and the shoulder was narrow it was difficult for us to maneuver and we were unable to open the slide out completely. We had 50 amp service which worked well. There were no other utilities. No dump station in park. There was no cell or Wi-Fi service. We were able to pick up local channels with antenna. Despite all of these inconvenient things, this is a beautiful park and well worth the problems of the campsite. Numerous deer wandered through our campsite and each site was separated from its neighbor by oak and other shrubs. The night sky was glorious and allowed viewing of millions of stars and the Milky Way. There are two trails which allow leashed dogs, a rarity in a National Park. We camped at South Rim (NPS Campground) in a Fifth Wheel.

Tips for other Campers:

Stop at all of the overlooks on the south rim. The boat tours sponsored by the park service was well worth the 25 mile drive out of the main part of the park. Be aware of that if you wish to visit this with your vehicle and trailer that the parking is over 3/4 mile regular parking and trailhead. The hike to the boat launches strenuous but well worth the effort.

Drydocking with fire ring and picnic table. We just fit into a spot on loop C along the road but had to back it into the spot to snug up against two short "bumper" posts in the ground. Pit toilets, no water in latrines but you can get water for bottles, not for your RV. It is a fairly steep drive in and out for about 5 miles. This is your basic NPS campground. Great location but this one was not kept up. I know the in thing is to keep things wild and vegetation natural, but there is a fine line to staying in the woods and becoming one with the woods. Our site was not level and was hard to get it level but it worked. It was fine and we would probably go back. We camped at South Rim (NPS Campground) in a Fifth Wheel.
