Small but very pretty campground. Not far from main hwy and downtown. Staff friendly and helpful. Asked for two spaces together but didn't get it. They had to move our friends but still not next to each other. You can't pick spaces ahead of time. This would have helped. Spaces were small but shaded and nice. Restrooms were clean. We would stay there again. We camped at Lightner Creek Campground in a Tent Trailer.

Big rig friendly with level sites. Campground is up a steep road and would be difficult to maneuver in bad weather. Dog park and restrooms was good and no problem with our satellite. If you like isolation (not us), this is the campground for you. Our site was in the back of the campground with a dried up creek behind of us. It is 10 miles to Walmart, downtown, and shopping. There is no Verizon service anywhere at the campground. The only internet is at the office. The laundry room was closed for the season. We camped at Lightner Creek Campground in a Travel Trailer.

We picked this campground, because we were looking for shade and closer to Durango than the place we stayed in Bayfield. We are ecstatic that we found this place! The new owner, as of December 2107, takes great pride in her campground. She is working hard to make improvements, but change does not happen overnight. We got a gravel pull thru site for 4 nights. The bath house is excellent and well maintained. The roads are easy to negotiate. We had several local stations with antenna, and although we were warned that the box canyon would affect our cell and internet, we got Verizon coverage ok. They do offer free wi-fi, by the office. The campground is about 5 minutes from downtown Durango and we went there everyday, Can't wait to see what has improved, by the next time we visit! They believe in their rules and review them with you on check-in. I am okay with that, as long as rules are for everyone and they were! We camped at Lightner Creek Campground in a Motorhome.

Overall Rating:

Lightner Creek Campground is a serene, wooded paradise near the end of a county road five miles west of thriving Durango, Colorado. It is lovely and carefully maintained and offers some paved sites with small grassy separations and other sites that are gravel. Almost every site has trees or backs up to the creek. This is a full service resort with pool (cool but usable), play area for kids, laundry, showers and more. We loved it and will be back. But even paradise can sometimes stand improvement. The drive-thru sites are narrow and do not offer any area to step down from a trailer or coach. Instead there is a pavement edge that rolls down two inches to the grass, which turns to mud in the rain. A real hazard for slips and falls. It would take up precious grass space but adding a gravel landing beside the pads would improve safety. The online booking service also has problems adequately describing the dozen or so hillside sites that comprise part of the campground. These sites vary significantly in level or near level space making it hard in some cases to safely unhitch a travel trailer. That also makes it hard to rely on published site length to make a selection that really accepts your rig. Call or email to make sure your rig fits uphill sites. One more area that needs improvement is the trash dumpsters. The two lids are steel and are very heavy to lift, especially for seniors. There is obvious need for bear proofing garbage dumpsters. Still, some accommodation needs to be considered. These are somewhat minor inconveniences compared to the overwhelming beauty of the place and the friendly family owners who work tirelessly to provide a high quality camping experience. As said above, we will be back! We camped at Lightner Creek Campground in a Travel Trailer.

Camping sights are gravel and are very close together with some shade. Very few camp sites have 50 amp electrical service so the park can only accommodate few big rigs. As the park is in a canyon, there is very little noise from the roadway. It also makes for very poor cell service (Verizon), internet, satilite and OTA television reception. The camp "hot spot" is next to the office, but doen't expect much better capability. We camped at Lightner Creek Campground in a Motorhome.

This park is nestled in the trees, there is a creek running through the park, we felt wonderful the second we pulled in! The staff is so sweet and helpful! It was the perfect location, four miles from Durango activity and only 30 miles from Mesa Verde! We had a site by the creek with a deck, furniture and a propane grill! It is a mile and a half off the road, so very quiet. We camped at Lightner Creek Campground in a Fifth Wheel.

My brother camped here in his pop-up in the early 90's and let me borrow it and I stayed here in 1994. The location is great...close to Durango and Mesa Verde N.P. There is a creek running through the park (pretty fast water) and plenty of trees. Being an older campground, it doesn't have the new facilities, concrete pads, etc. some might expect...it's more of a good, old fashioned campground. No fires allowed due to being in a valley. The site we stayed in was relatively level and had a picnic table. We chose a pull-thru site, which we were escorted to, because we didn't want to un-hook our toad. The sites are fairly close together, but it didn't pose a problem. We didn't have kids, but if you do, this is a great spot as there were plenty of them running around, riding bikes, playing, etc. This is definitely a family friendly place. We had our 2 dogs, but didn't take advantage of the fenced in dog area since there was a big, friendly dog inside and we have a puppy who we didn't want to get mowed over. The bathrooms were clean, but we didn't use the showers, so can't remark on those. The staff was quite friendly. It was kinda loud at night...from all the people having so much fun, but it wasn't a bother and quieted down by bedtime. Zero road noise. We walked around the park and there are some great tent sites along the water...and cabins, which seemed to be rented. Seemed to be some family groups vacationing together. We had trees, but our satellite found south. Some of the sites have more trees. We didn't use wifi so can't report on it. We had a 30 amp, full hookup site. They had some raised fire pit things that some folks had access to (via rental or their site), namely for S'mores...our neighbor had wanted one, but none were available. If that sounds like something you'd want, you might want to ask ahead of time to ensure you get one. Lightner Creek Campground was quite full, but not completely booked. We reserved our spot that morning. We camped at Lightner Creek Campground in a Motorhome.

Just spent 5 nights at Lightner Creek in one of their water/electric sites. This was our second stay in 2 years. Just as last year, our overall experience was great! Friendly folks, clean restrooms/showers/laundry and the grounds were well kept. On the downside, internet and cell phone reception was very poor. Even the wifi hotspot at the office was barely usable. Note to allergy sufferers - the numerous cottonwood trees in the park were in full bloom, showering the park with pollen. This year's stay was in mid June. Last year we visited in mid July - no pollen issues then. Have fun! We camped at Lightner Creek Campground in a Travel Trailer.

Tips for other Campers:

The park is less than 5 miles to downtown - good location. We checked out all the other parks in Durango and Lightner Creek beats them all in our opinion. Although the sites are gravel, the roads in the park are paved, so dust was never an issue.

This park is in a canyon with a creek running through it. It is quiet and clean. Kids will love the pool and creek. The staff is friendly and helpful. The spots are level and there are lots of trees. Cellphone and internet are limited at best because you are in a canyon and they only have DSL service. You are 10 minutes from downtown Durango. This is a must stay RV Park for this area. This campground is very well kept up and very well run with great staff. If sites were farther apart would give a 10 rating. We had a really tight space to get into and we had two very experienced people help us maneuver and get into our site. We had a nice big shade tree which was great in the summer heat. We were also just across the street from the creek, which was so beautiful and peaceful. The dog park was a huge plus. Traveling with dogs is much easier when they have a nice fenced area we can take them to play. The pool was nice and had gorgeous hanging baskets to add to the beauty. There were flowers planted here and there that made the campground look like home. There was WiFi at the check-in area, but I did not use it as we stayed on the go. The area was a great base camp to explore surrounding areas. We went to Bar D Chuckwagon one night. It is a very family friendly show and fabulous dinner. Enjoyed it very much. I would definitely stay at Lightner Creek Campground again and highly recommend. We camped at Lightner Creek Campground in a Fifth Wheel.

We did the BEAUTIFUL scenic drive into Silverton...a beautiful little western town with great food and shopping. We also went to Mesa Verde one day and did the driving tour and ate at the Far Views restaurant. Very interesting. One night we went to the Bar D Chuckwagon show. The show was so entertaining and the rib eye steak dinner was great!

Overall Rating:

This a very clean and well maintained campground in a beautiful setting. Owners and staff were welcoming and very helpful in getting us set up. Showers and bathrooms were clean. Campsites here are generally tight. Our gravel site proved to be just long enough for our 25' Airstream and TV and was a challenge to level both side to side and front to back. We were backed to the creek that runs through the CG, with a pleasant view, but our overall experience was negatively affected as we were located next to a cabin that seemed to accommodate what appeared to be an unusual number of folks, including 4 or 5 small children who, while very cute, were "busy" and a bit loud much of the time. Wifi worked well until the campground became full over the holiday weekend, at which point it became largely unusable. Cell coverage is spotty but no surprise given the location of the CG. Overall we enjoyed our 6 day stay and will certainly return when back in Durango. A beautiful place that is well maintained. We camped at Lightner Creek Campground in a Travel Trailer.

In general, the other reviews cover the highs (and lows) of this CG. While on the small side, we had no issue navigating it in our 30' fifth. CG is 1.5 miles from the main road, and another 4 mi. from Durango. Trip into town for groceries, restaurants, etc. is fast and convenient. CG is very pleasant and pretty - well treed, with Lightner Creek running through it. It is NOT just a parking lot, as so many can be. Staff were very pleasant, and gave ample assistance in backing into site and setting up. Note that WiFi is non-existent in the CG, and due to being in a canyon, cell service is also very, very spotty. Some sites have very nice decks overhanging the creek! Sites vary as to amount of leveling needed - some were great, some had significant slope to them. Spacing, while not on state park levels, was good, giving a decent amount of room between neighbors. As noted, laundry driers take a very long time - bring lots of quarters and time. Took us 3 hrs and $10.50 to wash/dry (simultaneously) 2 loads. Steep incline to entrance drive, but was easily manageable. Minimal secondary parking available, but rigs with toads were easily accommodated - just don't plan on this being a CG where groups with many vehicles can share a spot.

Our space also required electrical and water extensions for our cords/hoses, which we had.

Overall, we enjoyed it a lot, and would return! We camped at Lightner Creek Campground in a Fifth Wheel.

One mile down 160 toward town is the Durango Off Leash dog park. A HUGE open area with trails to allow Fido to run. Makes up for the restricted space at the campground! Google it, no sign for it on the main road, and it appears you are pulling in a private driveway and parking on someone's property - look for the "Public Parking" signs once you turn off the road.

Campground is very nice well-kept but the owners should not be in public service business. Many other camp grounds in the area to choose from that will make your stay enjoyable. Not sure what is up with the septic system but the stink was terrible at times. Glad we were gone most of the day. We camped at Lightner Creek Campground in a Travel Trailer.
