Date of Stay: August, 2017 - $65.00
Overall Rating:

First Impression: CG has an average roadside appearance but you immediately see a bunch of packed RVs upon entry. Entrance road seriously potholed. Safety: No concerns. Access: Into Estes Park, follow route US-36 through town, heading west towards the Rocky Mtn Natl Park then left onto Mary's Lake Road. Signs easy to see. Garmin GPS was accurate. Office: Friendly staff, token store with snacks and a very few RV items. Credit cards accepted. Online reservations available. Good Sam discount. Facilities: Nice pool (unheated), small, residential style hot tub, no fitness room or rec center. Large, clean, laundry room. Nice, clean restrooms with good fixtures and large, private showers (score "A"). Propane sales. Nice playground. Dog walk area but no off-leash dog run. Attractive mini-golf course. Campground: A rushing river borders the CG which could flood. No storm shelter. Some trees border the CG; none inside. Interior roads are narrow, rutted dirt with "be careful" turns; no overhead obstacles. Big rig and long coach challenging but do-able. No tent area or yurts but cabins are available. Sites are 10-20' apart where you park your toad/tow, level, dirt/gravel/grass, ALL BACK-IN, grass between. Utilities at rear of site with FHU-20/30/50; no meters. Low water pressure with good taste. Sewer pipe is 4" unthreaded, ranging from below ground level to about 4" above. No patios; very nice, plastic picnic tables. Open fires not permitted but grills are okay. Good satellite views. Free cable TV. Free Wi-Fi when it worked; weak coverage; no bandwidth, pages couldn't load. Verizon phone and 4G at 4 bars, but pages had problems loading here, also (too many people, too few towers?). No recycle bins. Noise: No railroad, aircraft, traffic, or interstate noise. Bug Report (early August): no insects. Runners: CG roads marginal for running but sloppy mud after rain. Yoga: grass between sites okay for your mat. Conclusion: Score 5-Acceptable, overpriced. We camped at Spruce Lake RV Resort in a Fifth Wheel.

Tips for other Campers:

Estes Park, CO, a gateway to the Rocky Mountain National Park, is an attractive, quaint, stylish, tourist trap. Early August - traffic was horrific - people everywhere. Ace hardware, TruValue hardware, no Walmart, assorted pharmacies, many churches, local restaurants, fast food chains, diesel at Safeway $2.389. No national restaurant chains. Everything is expensive.

Sadly, the staff of this place is downright rude. I will not stay here again, and if it hadn't been for the location I wouldn't have this time. I'll give an example: a man parked next to me was checking in. As he was wrapping it up they asked him about a child that had just come in the door. He said it was his grandson. They cancelled his transaction and accused him of trying to rip them off by not paying an extra $5 a day for the child. He said he had no idea they charged for children. I've NEVER heard of another place doing that and frankly I was shocked at how he was treated. The showers are grubby and they charge $8 to fish in their pond, but no one I talked to had caught a fish, and I didn't see anyone catching a fish the entire week I was there. They advertise a miniature golf park. It apparently washed away years ago and is roped off. They just forgot to take it off their map, brochure and website. I will not stay here again. We camped at Spruce Lake RV Resort in a Motorhome.

The park is very cramped. The staff is not real helpful on check in and with questions. The location is nice but this was one of the most expensive and least enjoyable stays on our recent 3 week trip. They have a group area, playground, fishing pond, small pool. Lots of amenities but none of them particularly nice. It feels a lot like an older KOA (which I am not a fan of) We camped at Spruce Lake RV Resort in a Fifth Wheel.

This park is very conveniently located to Rocky Mountain park and the scenery around it is beautiful. We had two big complaints. The spaces are very tight and not angled. An employee tried to help us back in and it was virtually impossible. He ended up advising is to pull through someone else's spot behind us to get in. Glad they were gone :/. The close proximity to the other campers also ruined the beauty of the surroundings. Not much point in being somewhere beautiful if every where you look you are looking into someone's else's camper. The biggest complaint is that the dump line at our site was almost full. When we tried to dump our water it filled up and started to overflow. Ended up having to drive 9 hrs with our tanks full to our next stop because there was no one in the office to assist us. Unfortunately the other parks in the area didn't look much different but we would definetly try another if we return. We camped at Spruce Lake RV Resort in a Travel Trailer.

Overall Rating:

The campground is just on the west side of town with beautiful views of the mountains. The road in is wide, once inside the park some of the turns are tight. There are over 100 sites with various hook ups. The sites are back-in and wide but fairly short, we saw a number of people having difficulties backing into some of the sites. There is a picnic table and ours had full hook-ups, 50 amp and good water pressure. There is a pool, fishing pond, swimming pool and a play ground. The WiFi did not work at all even though the signal pole was at the back of our RV. Our Verizon signal was strong and our MiFi worked well. We stayed July 3-July 10, 2017 and paid $66.49 a night, with our Good Sam discount, the highest we have ever paid. We camped at Spruce Lake RV Resort in a Motorhome.

Rate of $70.75 per night is with Good Sam discount and $5.00 fee for extra adult. This rate is competitive with other parks in the area for full hook-ups and like accommodations. This resort pricing and this is no resort. Roads and pads are mostly dirt with a small patch of grass at each site. Sites are short, but adequate for our 35' MH. We had room to put out the awning and park our tow vehicle and still not be right on top of our neighbor. We were in site #10. Other parks in the area are much tighter. Pool was closed and hot tub is of a residential nature. There is a small playground for the kids. There is a fee to fish in their pond, however at this time it is out of fish, waiting for their delivery. The bathrooms/shower, although dated, were very clean and spacious. Locks on the entrance doors broken, no code required. Park staff friendly and will escort you to your site. After driving around and looking at some of the other parks, we found this park to be about as good as it gets for our needs. We liked the location and openness of this facility. We do not generally use the pool/hot tub, bathroom/showers or need to be entertained by park programs. We are just looking for a relatively clean, level location with full hookups and adequate room to put out our awning and patio items. With the exception of the price, this meets our needs. We will consider this park for future stays - price being the big factor. We camped at Spruce Lake RV Resort in a Motorhome.

Wondered why so many open spaces on Memorial Day weekend. Extremely tight spaces and first time we have ever been informed we had to move our trailer after being parked by an employee. No room to even put out awning. Estes is a beautiful town, but I wouldn't stay here again. We camped at Spruce Lake RV Resort in a Travel Trailer.

Park was nice and had great views of the Rockies. Sites were somewhat close but not too bad. We had great weather so gravel roads and pads weren't an issue but that could be a problem with rain. Really, our only issue was the WiFi. Intermittent at best. Would be nice if more trees were planted around. We camped at Spruce Lake RV Resort in a Motorhome.

No grass or rock, mostly fine dirt, which makes it impossible to keep it out of your rig. It is located at 7500 ft. so if altitude bothers you not the place to visit. The campground looks like a parking lot with no pull-throughs and units close together and very few trees. They guide you to your site and pick up trash twice a day which is nice. All of the hookups worked. The lake looks nice saw kids fishing but no fish. Estes Park and Rocky Mtn. N.P. where very busy and filled with tourists. If you can visit in the spring or fall it would be better. Would look for a different campground next time. We camped at Spruce Lake RV Resort in a Motorhome.

Very nice staff, helpful to get you into each site easily, we had a back-in but the host moved a picnic table so we could pull through. Beautiful spot on the river, great mountain view. Not many shaded spots where we were, but the sounds of the stream were very peaceful. Trash pick up twice a day due to bear activity, close to downtown for attractions. The park seems to have an overall tired worn appearance. The pool and hot tub were closed even though it was June. The sites are spacious but are gravel mixed with grass. The location is good but I agree that this park is not a good value for such a high price. We camped at Spruce Lake RV Resort in a Motorhome.

The attraction for this park, which is essentially a parking lot on a river, is its central location about 2 miles east of the Beaver Meadows entrance to Rocky Mountain National Park and about 2 miles west of the bustling downtown of Estes Park. It is nice to stay west of Estes Park if you are mainly focused on RMNP so you don't have to drive through the Estes Park summer traffic each time you want to enter RMNP.

Spruce Lake is well-maintained (except the putt-putt course that was destroyed in a flood three years ago). The laundry room was one of the largest and nicest I have seen in 9 years of camping all across the country. The camp hosts are friendly and there is a small trout pond your kids can fish in (for $8.50 per day). But the RV sites are crammed together and there is nowhere to put your lounge chair and absorb the beauty of the area. If you don't mind dry camping, you would be much happier getting a camping site within RMNP if you are there for the scenery and can get a reservation. We camped at Spruce Lake RV Resort in a Travel Trailer.

Tips for other Campers:

Rocky Mountain National Park is the big attraction. If you are going to RMNP and Estes Park in the summer, avoid the weekends if possible, because they get very crowded. Even on Monday - Wednesday (the best days to visit), try to be in RMNP very early (like 7:00 a.m.) to hike or drive Trail Ridge Road. You'll avoid the long lines at the RMNP entrances and along the roads. Trail Ridge Road can become bumper to bumper on summer afternoons.

Very convenient to Rocky Mountain National Park. A park employee helps you back in your site, which is very much appreciated and necessary because the sites are not angled. We had to wait about 15 minutes to park because a travel trailer in our row was backing in and then had to unhook. Tight spaces between rows. We camped at Spruce Lake RV Resort in a Fifth Wheel.

I have mixed feelings about this park as the sites and roads are not well maintained and dirt mixed with some gravel and mostly back in on and mine was not level as one would expect at this price...but it was close enough for the jacks to work with one wheel slightly off the ground. Wifi was not great...used my cellphone plan mostly. Bathrooms were VERY well kept and laundry was nice. Kids will enjoy the fish pond. Staff was excellent. The main thing this park has going for it is location which is wonderful for access the spectacular RockyMtn. National Park. Despite the poor value...we'd stay again in this $30 park with a $30 location. We camped at Spruce Lake RV Resort in a Motorhome.

Estes Park is a busy but nice little town with lots to see, eat and do. Library has free wifi if the park doesn't work well. Plenty of stores and restaurants only 1.5 miles from the campground...and the visitors center there has lots of good suggestions and brochures. Park and ride the free shuttle in town.
