This is a beautiful park with lovely flat RV spots, primarily pull throughs. There's lots of vegetation in between sites. My only complaint is that it's near a railroad crossing. The noise woke me up in the night several times. Otherwise the park is very quiet and lovely. It's also right near town, which is very convenient. We camped at James M. Robb-Colorado River State Park (Fruita Section) in a Travel Trailer.

Overall Rating:

James M. Robb State Park, Fruita exists mostly as a campground. It is on the edge of Fruita, CO, a small suburb of Grand Junction. It has a small fishing pond, stocked with trout. Access to the Colorado River, a swimming pond that has been closed since 2006, and access to a bike path. We met an older woman who had lived in Fruita her whole life, who was visiting the park for the first time. She said the park was built around the swimming pond, and when the swimming pond filled up with duck poop and was closed, then nobody came anymore. But the campground is lovely. Sites are paved, mostly flat, with hookups, and have picnic tables with shade covers. If there's no burn ban, there are fire pits. Most sites are pull throughs, although I noticed a back in site next to the lake that I would try to get if we ever came through again. There isn't a bad site in the campground. Lots of space and privacy. The showers, restrooms, and laundry are next to a playground in the center of the campground. One downside was mosquitoes in the evenings, so be prepared for that. Cell service was fine. We camped at James M. Robb-Colorado River State Park (Fruita Section) in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

The park itself doesn't have much, but Colorado National Monument is just up the road. The Fruita town center is cute and worth a trip. We spent most of our time in Grand Junction, about 15 minutes drive, restocking after a couple of weeks in the back country. The big box malls in Grand Junction were a welcome sight after a couple of weeks in southern Utah.

Overall Rating:

This is a nice, quiet state park conveniently located near I-70 and a solid place to overnight or spend a few days to see the sights in the area. Most of the RV sites are well-designed asphalt/concrete pull-throughs with asphalt roads and plenty of room between the sites. The restrooms are new and clean and there is a laundry room and a small visitor center. The sites have 30-amp electric and most do not have sewer. However, there is a well-located and well-designed dump station in the park. Note that, in addition to the camping fee, there is an additional $7 per day, per vehicle entry fee for non-Colorado residents. Showers cost $1. There is a small lake, a playground and access to the Colorado River. We camped at James M. Robb-Colorado River State Park (Fruita Section) in a Travel Trailer.

Two great brew pubs in lovely, historic downtown Fruita. Downtown can be accessed from the park on a concrete hike/bike path; 2 miles one way. Get info on the area at the Colorado Welcome Center, which is walking distance from the park.

This park is amazing! The view is spectacular. The staff are very friendly and helpful. The facilities are in great shape. We showed up several hours before check-in, but they let us in anyway (some state parks won't let you in even when your site is open, so we were very happy about this). The only (very minor) negative point was that it cost $0.25 per minute for the showers. On the other hand, this could also be considered a positive, since the showers were always free and the cost is quite reasonable. Note also that there was a $7.00 park entrance fee that had to be paid on top of the camping permit. We would definitely return to this park. We camped at James M. Robb-Colorado River State Park (Fruita Section) in a Travel Trailer.

Tips for other Campers:

We unhooked our trailer and spent the day driving through and hiking in the nearby Colorado Monument National Park. The views are spectacular. The topography is similar to the Grand Canyon, but on a smaller scale. The big advantage over the Grand Canyon is that it is much less crowded. It was rare that we came across another person on the hikes we did. If you like hiking, definitely visit this park.

The sites here are wonderful, very spacious, private and a lot of vegetation. We were with a group and were lucky enough to draw a full hook up site. The rate I quoted is the average for the group, not sure how much a full hook up is. Note that on top of the camping fee, there is the daily use fee. Plus, you have to pay for showers, which we did not need and it was a good thing - $1 for 4 minutes! The campground is pretty and well maintained. There is a concrete trail along the Colorado River but it only is about a quarter mile long. You can ride around Fruita, but there is not much of interest there, no little downtown area that we found but the residential neighborhoods are pretty. The laundry room was very clean and reasonable. We camped at James M. Robb-Colorado River State Park (Fruita Section) in a Travel Trailer.

State campground. We had water and electric hookups. Full hook up sites are available but were all reserved when we stayed. Sites are level and paved with very easy access. Nice campground, well maintained and on the Colorado River. Very large spaces--more like a campground than an RV park. Lots of insects by river and in areas close to river (picnic grounds), but not bad in the campground. Close to Colorado Monument and to Grand Junction and Fruita. Most of the wineries are about 20 miles away, but this is a much better choice for camping than the RV parks in town. We camped at James M. Robb-Colorado River State Park (Fruita Section) in a Tent Trailer.

Very nice, modern campground with concrete sites and gravel patios. Each site has a covered picnic table. The sites are well designed, very level, and large enough for most RVs. Sites are well spaced. The laundry was clean and reasonable. All hookups worked well. The location is great for visiting The Colorado Monument and The Grand Mesa. We toured the Island Campground section of this state park and it was not nearly as nice. We camped at James M. Robb-Colorado River State Park (Fruita Section) in a Travel Trailer.

We really liked this campground. The spots are very private and spacious. There is a paved path next to the Colorado River where I rarely saw other people (or dogs). There is a nice trail around the lake. We had a problem with our RV on the day we were leaving and the staff was very helpful. My only complaints were that the grass around our camp site and other areas around the park really needed mowing and that there was a lot of goose poop near the water. Even so, we would definitely return. Actually, we didn't really want to leave. We camped at James M. Robb-Colorado River State Park (Fruita Section) in a Motorhome.

This being a state park in CO, you do have to pay a daily fee on top of the camp fee. We have an annual pass but I believe the daily fee was $7. We were pleasantly surprised to have FHU in a state park. All utilities worked well. There is lots to do (fishing, playground, trails, bikes) but it was too hot for us to get out and enjoy them. Temps in mid-90s and not much shade at our site. Some sites had more shade than others. They were all pull-thru sites. Satellite, no problem, AT&T and Verizon, good coverage. Very close to the Colorado National Monument. If there was a down side, it would be that they have a sprinkler system that runs a lot and it left spray on our vehicle that we had just washed! Would stay here again. We camped at James M. Robb-Colorado River State Park (Fruita Section) in a Fifth Wheel.

Made a reservation and the rate was $24 but when we got to the gate we had to pay a vehicle fee. I don't know how they thought we would get there with a travel trailer if we didn't have a tow vehicle. A little irritating. Showers are a buck for four minutes of cold water. Park is otherwise nicely maintained. We camped at James M. Robb-Colorado River State Park (Fruita Section) in a Travel Trailer.

Beautiful little park with concrete pads, pull thrus, and nice little shelters over the picnic tables. Very close and convenient to Grand Junction, yet peaceful quiet in a nature surrounding. The bike trail/walkway into Fruita is a nice plus. We would definitely stay here again. Colorado State Parks are the best -- buy the annual pass for $70.00 it will pay for itself in 10 days. This is a very modern and nice campground that has a lot going for it. Sites are nicely spaced with a fair bit of privacy, perfectly level concrete pads, large gravel patios with shelter roofs, wide smooth roads, and full hookups available for a great price. It's a short walk down to the Colorado River for our Lab to get wet before longer walks around the campground or the paved sidewalk to the community center. Verizon and AT&T both had strong signal and fast speeds. It's only a mile or two to restaurants and stores in the small but cute town of Fruita, and not much farther to all that Grand Junction offers. Check-in was smooth and friendly and our annual CO parks pass was still active from last year so we didn't have extra admission fees. Our only problem with the campground was the inescapable swarms of biting mosquitoes. We couldn't go outside our RV for more than a few seconds without getting lots of bites. This one factor made our stay considerably less enjoyable and is why I can't give the park a perfect score. Mosquitoes are a fact of life and we use repellent in plenty of parks, but the ones here were some of the worst we've encountered. We camped at James M. Robb-Colorado River State Park (Fruita Section) in a Motorhome.

I also liked this campground very much. I listed the fee for an electric and water site, but the reservation fee adds another $10 for a one-night stay. I already bought a $70 annual Colorado State Park pass since I am going to spend quite a bit of time at state parks here, but you do need to know that there is also a $7 per day fee beyond the campsite fee. That can make this expensive for one night. I liked paved campsites and was happy to find a laundry room with three washers and three dryers, PLUS a change machine! My pull-through site was large and very clean, plus I was able to get 3 bars of Verizon data and good voice coverage. This campground is near stores, but also very close to the Colorado River, so it does not seem cramped or noisy. I want to come back here next year when it is not so hot and I can stay longer to take advantage of the paved bike trail along the river. We camped at James M. Robb-Colorado River State Park (Fruita Section) in a Motorhome.

We really liked this state park. Check in went fine... we had to pay an extra $7 for the park entrance fee, but knew that ahead of time. We purchased 2 bundles of fire wood which were very dry. The sites were very spacious, with low foliage to give privacy between sites. Loved our site, right along the edge, but if the day use area was full, we would have had to look at a lot of parked cars. Each site had a great fire ring, covered picnic table, and beautiful paved pad and pebble sitting area. You could see the freeway and town, but the road noise was very minimal and it was nice to be so close to it. Beautiful area. Could definitely see staying there again. Would love to explore the monument area next time. We camped at James M. Robb-Colorado River State Park (Fruita Section) in a Motorhome.
