Overall Rating:

The campground sits on the largest reservoir in Colorado and easily accessible from the highway. Sites are somewhat spacious and only those in the D loop have electric, no water. Water spigots are available by the restrooms or the dump station. The best sites are those without electric which sit closer to the reservoir although almost all of the sites have a view. There are showers near the launch ramp but they are $3.00 for 10 minutes and some stalls were out of order (did not use). Landscape is mostly scrub with very few trees. If you boat and/or fish, this is a great place. No swimming as elevation is well over 7,000 feet. We camped at Elk Creek Campground in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

Beautiful part of Colorado. Crested Butte is only 27 miles away, Black Canyon on the Gunnison is about 50 miles away, town of Gunnison has tons of restaurants and shops. Really a nice downtown area. Great grocery shopping at the City Market? Walmart is very small but adequate.

Check in is self service for loop D. Go to reserved site, name will be posted on post in front of site. Site has electric hook-up, no sewer and no water. Fill up at dump station before setting up at site. Our site, D16, was directly across from restroom so we could get water with 75 feet of hose. Sites were on a level concrete pad with a graveled patio. The ramp was black top pavement. The site was excellent, good space between sites. We stayed for a week. We camped at Elk Creek Campground in a Travel Trailer.

Tips for other Campers:

Fire wood is available at City Market in Gunnison. The boat tour of the Black Canyon is excellent, reservation is required, make reservation at visitor center at the campground. The climb down to the boat and back up is strenuous, 128 steps to climb. High Alpine brew pub in Gunnison is very good, good beer and food.

We stayed here four nights. Stayed in loop D ( only loop currently with electric, had 50 amp). Nice level concrete pads, all loops looked well laid out. Most sites had good room in between. Easy access in and out, even for very large rigs. Most were pull thru, some back in ( check map online if it matters). If you get a back in I recommend unhooking up across street from sewer dump. Roads are one way. Would definately stay here again. We camped at Elk Creek Campground in a Motorhome.

Overall Rating:

Recently camped here in a 38' fifth wheel. Pros: Easy to find, road are large enough for a bigger rig, 50 amp service in D loop, flush toilets, some pull through sites but most are back-ins, level concrete pads, close to Gunnison and not that far to to the National Park, no dump and water on-site, but there is an RV dump station, plenty of space at each campsite, nice picnic tables, good value. Cons: Pay showers at $3.00 for 10 minutes, not much shade cover for hot days, seems to be windy every afternoon. We would stay here again. We camped at Elk Creek Campground in a Fifth Wheel.

Overall Rating:

Elk Creek National Recreation Area (NRA) and Black Canyon of the Gunnison campgrounds no longer grants 50% discounts on all camp sites when using a Senior Access Pass. Instead these parks grant a 50% discount on "non electric" (dry) then tacks on a fixed utility fee. The cost of a camp site with electricity can be up to $14 per night. Still a bargain. I'm sure the fine print has all of the details but I could not find it.

Also be aware that the boat tour on the Curecanti River no longer accepts the Senior Pass. The boat tour cost $24 per person.

Elk Creek NRA has four loops with only loop D having electricity, the rest of the loops have no hookups. All of the interior roads and sites are on asphalt and are very narrow. Loop D also has a concrete pad. The electrical box contains 20/30/50 amp service. The voltage hovered around 117. All sites have a picnic table and a fire ring. Fire wood is not available for purchase within this park.

There are (2) bathrooms within loop D, the rest of the loops have (1). The park does not have a shower room. There are showers by the boat marina and managed by a concessionaire. The cost is $3.00 for 10 minutes. The showers were nasty looking; would not consider using them.

The dump station and fresh water is located just before the kiosk. All of the bathrooms also have a fresh water spigot but you would need a very long hose to reach it.

The sites vary in length and width. Some sites can fit a RV, a tow and a boat. There is also a swimming area just beyond loop B.

The camp hosts enforce the 10 PM quiet hour. We would come back to this park if we were in the area. We have a 32 foot RV. We camped at Elk Creek Campground in a Fifth Wheel.

Elk Creek Campground is part of the Curecanti National Recreation Area, and is at the eastern end of the large long and beautiful Blue Mesa Reservoir. The campground is on a long slope ending at the lake some half mile off, and has 4 loops with some 128 sites according to the campground handout map. Loops A and D accept reservations. D loop has electricity. The roads are paved and D has paved sites; didn't go into the other loops. Two bathhouses in D. The D sites vary in levelness and there were 6 pull-throughs out of 28 sites. The area is typical semiarid scrub with long visas. Dump station at the entrance with a nearby water fill. We had senior passes so $9/night. Our campground hosts were very nice and enjoyable. We camped at Elk Creek Campground in a Motorhome.

Beautiful view of the lake. Really nice level sites. The camphost was phenomenal - directed us to the site, helped us locate firewood and told us about the boat tour (highly recommend!). A must stop if you are anywhere near the Western Slope. We camped at Elk Creek Campground in a Travel Trailer.

Great stopover location while touring Colorado Rockies. Convenient to Black Canyon of the Gunnison River. D-loop has 50-amp service (no sewer or water), but all sites were reserved during weekend. A-loop had numerous unreserved sites, but there are no hookups. Shade trees are scarce. Federal senior rates apply. We would come back here. We camped at Elk Creek Campground in a Motorhome.

A nice clean, well kept campground. Could use more shade, but that will come with more time for the few trees here to mature. We camped at Elk Creek Campground in a Travel Trailer.

We stopped for a quick overnight visit on a recent vacation to Colorado. The campground was RV friendly with paved loops and pads. Most of the sites are back-ins. There are no trees in the area but a nice view of the stars at night. The wind picked up at dusk. The bathrooms had flush toilets and were in the classic NPS style from 30 years ago. There was a dump station with water hose for tanks. There were pay showers located elsewhere in the park. There didn't appear to be much to do here if you didn't bring a boat. We camped at Elk Creek Campground in a Tent Trailer.

This campground is located on Blue Mesa Reservoir. We stayed in Loop D which has electric hookups. Potable water is available near the dump station. We had a back-in site. Most back-in sites are long and wide to accommodate boats and trucks and trailers. There is a single loop road which was paved as were the sites. The loop road was a little narrow. Pullthrough sites were not very long so if you have a large fifth wheel you might not fit properly. We had two sites during our stay and our first site required some side-to-side leveling but the second site was better. The bathrooms were old. Showers are located near the marina. I took one look and decided not to use them. They were old, smelled and weren’t very clean. Electric was on the low side. Verizon aircard worked but was slow on National Extended network. Verizon cell phone worked on Extended network. The campground is right off Hwy 50 so there is traffic noise during the day but was very quiet at night. The dry camping sites were also large and could probably accommodate almost any sized rig. We would stay there also. We would stay here again. We camped at Elk Creek Campground in a Fifth Wheel.

Overall Rating:

This campground is in a beautiful area. However, it seems more for boaters and fishermen. I had expected to be able to take the kids down to the lake since the campground is right on it but there was no access. Also, the showers are pay showers and are located at the marina which was a good 1 mile walk from our campsite (D 23). Our site was electric only so it was not really reasonable to try to do our showers (family of 5) in the RV. We did not want to break up camp to drive to showers nor did we want a 2 mile round trip walk to shower. We left the next morning after our arrival rather than stay as we had planned. We would not return. We camped at Elk Creek Campground in a Motorhome.
