Date of Stay: September, 2017 - $26.00
Overall Rating:

We camped in the Lake Hasty campground. This is a pretty good state park campground, with huge sites. You won't have to worry about hearing your neighbors snore. In the loop where we stayed, you could mark off a football field in the open space in the center of the loop behind the campsites. We had plenty of room for our 41' motorhome in our back in site, with room to park our towed car (and another, if we had visitors) in front. The pad and patio is packed small gravel, and almost as hard as concrete. The site was quite level, and the grassy area around our campsite seems like we were on about a 1/4 acre lot between our next door neighbors on each side. There is no water hookup at the sites, but there are a few community spigots scattered on each loop. There is one dump station that serves the whole park, but it does have 4 lanes. We did have an issue with ants. We had an active bed in the middle of the patio when we arrived. We used some creature deterrent, and they weren't much of a problem the rest of our stay. We had weak signal for our Verizon MiFi, and no signal for our AT&T network phones. At times, we could walk a little way from our site to get a phone signal. The park is below the dam, which dampens the signals from the carriers. We had no problem with satellite dish reception for the TV, but there are zero over the air TV channels available. There is a small convenience store with a deli 2 miles away from the park, but if you need restaurants, groceries or WalMart items, the nearest town is Lamar, which is about 20 miles away. It's a town of about 36,000, so it has your basic needs. There is no one at the check in station. If you don't have a reservation, there is a self service slot to register and pay. Rangers patrol regularly, and they check your vehicle passes. You also need a state park pass in addition to the camping fee. We have an annual pass, but had to go to the visitor center to get a pass for our towed car. We camped at John Martin Reservoir State Park in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

Lamar is 20 miles away to the east for shopping and dining. There is a truck stop/travel center on the west side of Lamar. To the west 30 miles away is La Junta, about the same size as Lamar, with similar shopping and dining opportunities. It does have a very good Chinese restaurant, the Bamboo Panda, not a buffet.

We stayed here for 5 nites. Sites were electricity only(50 amp) & very ample in length for our 40'MH & tow. The sites were spaced away from each other for good privacy. Each site had a small shelter over the picnic tables providing shade & wind break . It was very windy at times. We were at the bottom side of the dam, but Lake Hasty was walking distance to fish or swim on the small beach. There was a convience store for bread, milk etc in Hasty a few miles away, but not for major groceries. We probably wouldn't stay again. We camped at John Martin Reservoir State Park in a Motorhome.

We knew that camping in SE CO in June was going to be a gamble. The first three days were 102 degrees plus and little breeze. Thankfully a cold front came through to cool things off and the weather was really nice our last three days. That said: we booked 7 nights but left a day early because we had already gone through THREE cans of bug spray and I was absolutely over trying to fight the mosquitos and deer flies any longer.

The campsites are well spaced out for the most part and were mostly level. There was a dead tree at the back of our parking area. Even with the dead tree 3" from the back of our rig, we had to stretch our power cable to the max to reach the pedestal. Overall a clean park with very friendly staff who work hard to keep up with the park's needs.

Definitely bring everything you will need and don't get low on fuel as the nearest town is 20 miles away in Lamar. Also, prepare for cell service to absolutely suck.

We MAY stay here again but would only go between October and April. We camped at John Martin Reservoir State Park in a Travel Trailer.

I arrived late afternoon on Friday before Memorial Day and found no one to check me in at the Hasty Campground booth. I had wanted to buy an annual pass, but no one to sell me one, so I camped illegally. I would have thought someone would be there on this big weekend. Campsites were large and reasonably level, and there was a laundry room nearby with three working washers and dryers, which was nice. A big disappointment, however, was that this campground was behind the huge dam so there was absolutely no Verizon phone or data cell service. Also, no view of the big lake or much of anything else. Also, to get into my loop, you had to wait behind people who were filling up water tanks since this is electric only. This is a very bad placement of a water spigot as the road is too narrow to get by and the trees scraped my rig to get close to water. Also, this is the kind of faucet where you have to hold lever down while you are sticking hose in tank, which is tricky when you are alone! They need to trim trees and put water fills in a different place. Nice dump station, however. Paying $24 for the site plus a $10 reservation fee and a $7 use fee makes this a very expensive state park for one night. We camped at John Martin Reservoir State Park in a Motorhome.

This campground was a pleasant surprise. It is way out in east Colorado and you hardly see a tree in sight then when in the park you loop down below the dam and there is a nice tree-filled campground. Spots roomy, lots of birds. Will definitely go back. Note that the water is not so good so bring your own drinking water and lots of bug spray if you are there in the warmer weather. We camped at John Martin Reservoir State Park in a Motorhome.

Date of Stay: September, 2016 - $28.00
Overall Rating:

As I age (apparently not so gracefully) driving the PU while towing a 5th wheel is stressful and it's good to be able to relax for a few days and unwind. This Colorado state park was a good place for me to de-stress. I stayed for four nights in the middle of September and the after Labor Day crowd wasn't here. The park was only about ½ full on Saturday and by early Sunday afternoon there were only about a dozen rigs left. Individual sites are well spaced from each other and you're not in your neighbor's pocket. You can choose a well shaded site or one in full sun. There is 50A electric at each site with community water spigots spaced throughout the entire park. A large tank dump facility is convenient on the way out. Value is a difficult concept and varies per individual preferences. For me, the $28 daily park fee PLUS the $7 daily car fee adds up to too much cost for too little value, despite the tranquility of the park. Were the two fees a total of about $25 a day, then the value might be more in line with what's offered. Even with that criticism, it's not a bad spot for a day or two. Poor AT&T cell service in the park. I had to drive to the visitor center for 5-bar 3G service. Lots of wildlife - deer, turkey, rabbit, squirrel and various birds including an amazing sight of hundreds of Turkey Vultures soaring back and forth on the updraft created by face of the dam that faced toward an easterly breeze. Standing on top of the dam I watched for 20 minutes as the birds seemingly enjoyed their flights back and forth. Would I stay again? Meh, probably if I were traveling the same roads, but I would not go out of my way to come back. We camped at John Martin Reservoir State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Tips for other Campers:

A strong recommendation is to visit Bent's Fort, a national parks historic site about 25 miles to the west, near La Junta. The fort has been reconstructed on the exact site of the 1830's original to the plans from that time. It is like stepping back 185 years to a era when only true adventurers traveled the Santa Fe trail. Well worth the 2-3 hours it will take to absorb all that's offered there.

Nightly rate is $24 plus $7 per vehicle. Aug vehicles fee waived for all military and vets regardless of state of residency. Electric only. Water spigots throughout campground. Dirt sites and roads in campground. Level sites. Sites are very well spaced. Picnic table (some covered). Many with some shade. Near lake. Some water-side sites. Birding opportunities through out park. Verizon signal okay. Extended from one overnight to three nights because it was so quiet and pleasant. The park was very nice with lots of trees. Beautiful view and very quiet. Only disappointment was we were under the impression that there was a beach for the lake, and there wasn't. Overpriced we think by about $7-8.00, but it's in Colorado. Full service restrooms, showers, but the showers are pay which we think is a bit much with the price paid for the site. They worked well though.

Campground was a nice surprise. We stayed in Hasty Campground and sites were extremely large, roomy and quite level. The waterfront sites were great; however, due to the roof structure over the picnic table, high, large RV's would have a problem fitting in them. Electric only at all sites, so fill your fresh water tank or bring water jugs. There are water hydrants throughout the park. Lots of shade trees on most of the sites, but there are many without any shade as well. We had reserved #91, but preferred to be closer to the water so we just chose another. All in all, a very pleasant stay. Gave it a 9 instead of 10 since there was no water or sewer at the sites. We camped at John Martin Reservoir State Park in a Travel Trailer.

Price includes $7/car load day fee and $24 camping fee. Being early in the season and midweek, we scored a lake front spot in the Lake Hasty campground (with electricity). It was very spacious, fairly level with a picnic table under a roof. We just barely fit width-wise with our opposing slideouts and the picnic table roof. No water or sewer at the sites. There is a dump station (no potable water at the dump station). There are water spigots about and a dish washing sink in the comfort station. The comfort station also has three sets of washing machines/driers for $1 ea. These were open the entire time of our stay. The bathroom part of the comfort station opened in the middle of our stay, that is where the change machines are. They didn't work well (either bring quarters or lots of small bills). My one attempt at a shower ($0.50/3 minutes, $0.25/minute thereafter) wasn't hot enough for me. There is a fair amount of hiking (around the lake, one-way through the park, and across the dam). I loved the view of water and the pelicans, but there were things that were off putting that prevented me from loving the place. I guess to throw it into a general category would be the other campers: campers two spaces over on both sides with loud music (during the day but still...OMG I am turning into my mother!), one with their dogs off leash, lots of trash on the trails and especially at the fishing spots, Sunday night people left their trash bags on the ground at the overflowing dumpster, Monday morning the ranger is cleaning up the mess after the animals got in it, during the week someone didn't get their fish carcass in the dumpster and again the animals got at it. We camped at John Martin Reservoir State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Biggest camp sites we have ever stayed at! Sites are HUGE! At least 60' between them. Very quiet. Tall trees and tons of birds. It felt like we were camping by ourselves in a park. Nice playground in the center of the site. Clean showers / bathrooms. Pay showers - $.50 / 3 minutes and up. Level site. Swimming beach down the road. Site available to us that night. Very helpful staff. We will go out of our way to come back here again if we are in SW Colorado! We camped at John Martin Reservoir State Park in a Motorhome.

One of the better CPW state park campgrounds. Sites on the east side of the Lake Hasty campground are heavily treed, large and spaced far apart. The camper services building with the restrooms and showers is open thru usually the end of October. There are 4 places to fish here. One of our favorite places in the spring and fall. It gets very, very hot here during the summer months. We camped at John Martin Reservoir State Park in a Fifth Wheel.
