Overall Rating:

As usual, my perspective is as a traveler in a 40' MH towing, not camping. The good: This is a well maintained state park with plenty of room between sites. All sites have a steel pavilion with a picnic table to provide afternoon shade and one side is closed to provide protection from the west wind. The sites are raked gravel maintained by the camp host. The Yampa River is adjacent to the campground. They have a gravel walking path around the entire park. The laundry, restrooms, and showers are very well cleaned daily and open 24/7 except for a brief period mid-day for cleaning. W/D is only 75 cents per load each. All RV sites have 50amp power but no water or sewer. Very nice visitor center as well. They do not sell firewood but there's a fair amount on the ground around the pathway and campers are permitted to collect. The not so good: There is very little shade at the RV sites. Trees are too small and too few. The sun can really bake you in hot June temps. With temps in the high 90's I needed run all 3 A/C's to maintain high 70's in MH. The gravel at the shaded portion of the sites is rather fine and somewhat deep making it a bit difficult to walk through much like beach sand. It collects easily in sandals or clogs, too. There is no green grass anywhere except at the office / laundry buildings. Everywhere else is stiff brown stubble. Route 40 is probably less than 100 yards from the campground and, although it isn't terribly busy, the road noise is annoying in this otherwise quiet location. Traffic does reduce at night but trucks can be heard a long way off even inside the coach. While there for a few days, the campground lost power for over four hours one day, and I had interruptions on at least two other days. However, the loss was not the fault of the campground. Overall, a decent place to stay but not much to see or do in the nearby area. I would stay here again as an overnight or several day stay. We camped at Yampa River State Park (Headquarters Campground) in a Motorhome.

Large flat grassy cg with gravel roads and sites. No water at sites but scattered blue unusual spigots that on lifting lever water comes out below the spout through a large bottom hole with a brass ring about it. Pulling the ring down lets the water exit the expected spout. It took me 30 minutes to figure this out. Sites were widely spaced, a few had trees by them. CG right by the fast moving Yapa river with a boat put in. A nice paved dump at the cg entrance. The visit center/office was very nice with a huge area relief table map and displays. The bath house was by coin for shower, but unbelievibly beautiful with inexpensive washer/driers. We camped at Yampa River State Park (Headquarters Campground) in a Motorhome.

If you don't have the Colorado Parks pass, there is an additional $7 daily use fee. You can buy the annual pass for $70. If reserving online, the fee is $10. Check-in at the visitor center.

Interior roads are gravel. Sites are long and level; some are pull-throughs and some are back-ins. We had plenty of space for our 40' motor home and tow car in a back-in site, but longer units would probably fit better in a pull-through. Each site has a picnic table with a wind shelter, a fire pit, and an area for a tent. There is a separate tent camping area as well. 20/30/50 amp electric at each site, but no water or sewer. There are spigots throughout the campground, a dump station on site, and pit toilets throughout the campground. There is a building adjacent to the visitor center with showers, restrooms and laundry. There are plenty of shelves/bars in the shower rooms. The showers require 4 quarters for 4 minutes. There are two washers (currently $1.00) and two dryers (currently $0.75).

There is a children's play area, volley ball, and horse shoes. The visitor center is small, but worth a visit. Staff was friendly. The park is nicely maintained. There is no fenced pet area, but there is a loop trail around the park, about a mile. There were no OTA channels. Verizon cell service was fine, internet was slow at times, but we managed with our booster. This is our second time here, and we would stay again if passing through the area. We camped at Yampa River State Park (Headquarters Campground) in a Motorhome.

September 20- 18 year old park according to park employee. Still looked new to us. Level site. Picnic tables have covered windbreaks to protect them, Nice touch. Verizon wireless and MIFI good if not a bit slow at times. Showers/laundry and plumbed toilet facilities next to the main administration building. Full 360 degree view of the night sky. The stars at night...the STARS! The Milky Way was out in it's finest. We camped at Yampa River State Park (Headquarters Campground) in a Motorhome.

Nice small state park with a friendly & helpful staff. Sites are nicely spaced & well cared for. Not much shade but each table has a cover. I would have given them 10 stars but there is a lot of road noise during the day. It quiets down during the night. We camped at Yampa River State Park (Headquarters Campground) in a Travel Trailer.

We appreciate that the sites at the Colorado state parks are beautifully spaced out & cared for. There are always camp hosts to check in with who work hard at maintaining each individual site right down to raking gravel and removing every speck of trash left behind. The laundry facilities are very inexpensive and worked great! We camped at Yampa River State Park (Headquarters Campground) in a Fifth Wheel.

We stayed here for a one night stopover and found the park to be one of the best we have seen. It is well maintained, and the staff helpful and friendly. Our site was spacious, and there was great dog walking on a loop trail around the park. Though it was adjacent to a major highway, the noise was more than acceptable. We would most assuredly stay here again. We camped at Yampa River State Park (Headquarters Campground) in a Travel Trailer.

This appears to be a fairly new campground and is very nicely maintained. The roads and sites are level gravel and laid out well for ease of access. Trees are small and offer little or no shade. There is good 50 amp service but no water or sewer hookups (water is available in the park and a dump station is available). AT&T phone and data service worked well in the area. Laundry and showers were acceptably clean. The area is quiet and the staff was friendly. We camped at Yampa River State Park (Headquarters Campground) in a Fifth Wheel.

We loved the quiet relaxed location with beautiful morning and evening views of the mountains. Our site was shaded by aspen trees. There is a little bit of highway noise from US 40, but not enough to be objectionable. Definitely recommend this park. Very friendly hosts. The $31 reflects the daily entrance fee ($7) in addition to the campsite fee. This is a very well laid out park, large sites, lots of space between sites good roads. East satellite set-up and good AT&T. There is only electric hook-up, but quite a few faucets available. There is a dump site.

Someone else didn't like "no trees." That is why I liked it; no leaves, no branches, no sap, no bird poop. We would stay here again. We camped at Yampa River State Park (Headquarters Campground) in a Travel Trailer.

Overall Rating:

We stayed here two weeks to explore the area. The campground is clean and well managed. Sites are relatively spacious and well laid out. They are level, gravel, and most of them have sturdy sheltered picnic tables and fire rings. Unfortunately, there isn't much shade and it's difficult to put out an awning due to all the wind. In a few years, the trees that have been planted should provide some much-needed shade. The campground is next to the Yampa River, but it's also right next to the highway, which can be noisy. Restrooms are clean and showers are barely used. Our camp host was very nice and helpful. The campground has a flat, fine-gravel, one-mile trail which is great for hiking or running. Water spigots are located throughout the campground. You can't hook up to them directly, but you can connect and top up your water tank if you're close enough to one. This seems typical of Colorado state parks. I would definitely recommend this park for a night or two if you're passing through. We stayed here longer for all the hiking and site-seeing opportunities. Note: Do your laundry at the laundromat in Hayden. We found the laundry facilities at the campground weren't very good. The park is conveniently located to a lot of hiking opportunities in the Routt National Forest. We camped at Yampa River State Park (Headquarters Campground) in a Travel Trailer.

Tips for other Campers:

Hayden is less than five miles down the road. The Bear River Valley Coop has propane and other sundries. It also has a nice coffee shop, the Hiway 40 restaurant, and a free museum. Steamboat Springs is only a half hour away from the park. Craig is a larger town only a few minutes west of the park. It has amenities like hardware stores, a City Market for groceries, and a wonderful museum. Stop in at the visitor center in Craig; the people there have are very helpful.

Gorgeous scenery and the groundskeepers do a great job at keeping the place clean. Freshwater fill and dump stations on-site. Book a site near the multiple spigots and bring and extra hose to fill up when you get low. Stayed during a storm and loss 50 amp late in the night. Power was back up a few hours later. Kudos to the city's electrical team for getting it back up so quickly. We camped at Yampa River State Park (Headquarters Campground) in a Fifth Wheel.

Nice campground a few miles from Steamboat Spring. Craig, Co. is just a few miles west which has a good many stores for those just passing through. The CG charges $7 per vehicle, which added $14 a night to their $24 per night few. It seems that Colorado does this in all their State Parks, which is annoying at best. CG volunteers and staff were very friendly and helpful. While the CG is on the Yampa River, there is very little access to it unless one intends to launch some kind of boat. Bring bug spray for mosquitos! They chased us inside at night. This might be the best RV camping option in that area. We camped at Yampa River State Park (Headquarters Campground) in a Motorhome.

This is a well kept state park. There is definitely a lack of trees. There are small trees planted, but when we were here 4 years ago I believe these same trees were here and are still very small. There are walking trails in the park. Access to the Yampa River is very limited and overgrown. We were told the area between the park and the river was not the State's and they don't maintain it. Was disappointed in how unlevel the sites are. This is a clean park and nice visitor center, but just a little disappointed in the lack of shade.
