Nicely forested campground situated right on the Alpine Loop. Sites have decent spacing, although the site we were in had poor drainage. Had to dig some troughs to drain the pooling rainwater. Fires allowed, very pretty lakes with walking path. Excellent starting point for any 4x4 riding - just exit the park. We camped at Castle Lakes Campground Resort in a Travel Trailer.

Watch your speed. Easy access to 4wd trails and the Alpine Loop. kinda noisy during the day with lot's of traffic on the nearby loop road, but quiet at night. Also lots of mosquito's.

Castle Lakes Campground is a nice spot about 7 miles west of Lake City, Colorado. Two good size trout lakes are on the property. Be advised it costs $7.00/day to fish on the lakes in addition to the campground fee. The staff are friendly, camping sites are level, spacious, plenty of shade trees and all have power and water hookups. Only some sites have sewer hookups, which is why I rated this a "7" instead of a "10". If you end up with a site without a sewer hook-up, check with the front desk and they'll offer you a site with sewer hook-ups if one is available, or, let you pull into one that is temporarily unoccupied so you can dump your tanks. We dumped prior to leaving after 4 days of camping. The sites are mostly back-in sites but some very large TT and fifth wheels had no problems getting in and out. The scenery is tremendous! The lakes are surrounded by snow capped peaks. The campground elevation is over 9,000 feet so be prepared with warm clothes. Lake City is very small with only two small grocery stores. Be advised to bring food and beverages with you. There is Internet at the campground office and cell service is spotty at best. This campground is fairly remote and a wonderful getaway for hiking, fishing, 4-wheeling, jeep rentals, etc. It's not a place to come to if you want all the conveniences of TV or nearby shopping. We stayed at site number 48 which was large and had the best views (but no sewer hook-ups). We camped at Castle Lakes Campground Resort in a Travel Trailer.

Just returned from Castle Lakes Camp Ground outside of Lake City CO. I've returned to this camp grounds year after year. Staff are very friendly, very helpful and you fell like you are very Welcome to their Camp Grounds. Bathrooms are always clean, Showers are always clean and Hot water every time I took a shower. They have jeep rentals, large lake with fairly nice size trout, full hook ups for RVs. A well stocked General store and just down the road, wild Moose, in two days I've seen 7 moose. Aspens were changing and snow along Alpine Loop. I will return there once again next year. I feel so relaxed and stress free while camping at Castle Lakes Camp Grounds. Thank you Castle Lake Staff. Keep up the good work. We camped at Castle Lakes Campground Resort in a Tent.

This was our second stay here. It is down a gravel road but easily managed by RVs. The sites were a little hard to maneuver, although some look like a pull through, if someone else is in the next site you have to back in. Ours was up a hill. Once in, the sites are very beautiful with views of the lake. On our last visit we rented a jeep from Castle Lakes, (they have 2) and drove the Alpine Loop. Fishing is available without a license for $7 limit 4. We caught nice sized trout. We camped at Castle Lakes Campground Resort in a Fifth Wheel.

Definitely drive the Alpine Loop unless you are afraid of heights or have altitude sickness. It does require 4 wheel drive. Enjoy the town of Lake City, we found the people extremely nice and helpful.

This is a nice quiet family campground at 9200' along the road to Cinnamon Pass. Even though it is a great place to stay for an ATV/jeep trip on the Alpine Loop, they are not allowed to be ridden inside the campground except when leaving or returning from an excursion. That keeps the noise down considerably. The fishing lakes are great for kids of all ages, and I appreciate that this is not the kind of campground that attracts "loud partiers." We spent two weeks in July here, and used the heater nearly every night; a very welcome relief from my south Texas summer. There is no TV signal (I don't use satellite TV on vacation), no phone signal, and only a very rudimentary WIFI signal around the lodge. The beauty of the location more than compensates for the lack of electronic amenities. It is a 20 minute drive into Lake City, but the road is good and the trip scenic. We camped at Castle Lakes Campground Resort in a Travel Trailer.

Tips for other Campers:

A concert at the BBQ Station in Lake City is great. For the price of a ticket we got a BBQ plate at a picnic table close to the stage to see "Asleep at the Wheel." Also memorable is a drive to the National Forest campground and fishing lakes off of Slumgullion Pass to see moose in the evening...but keep your distance from them, please!

(Note: The owner of this park had a serious accident just prior to our arrival. This review assumes that the facilities would be much the same or better if he was present. The cooperation of neighbors and seasonal campers suggest that the owners are good people.) The location is beautiful, mountains all around. Utilities worked fine, wifi is limited to in or near the office. Although a fishing and "off road" park it was peaceful (aside from one camper who cared less about who was bothered). A previous reviewer noted a dirt road access (CR 30). It is about the best dirt road you will ever drive in the mountains and do not be concerned. five miles past the campground is 4-wheel country. There is a lot of wildlife in the area so use caution. We camped at Castle Lakes Campground Resort in a Travel Trailer.

This is a great RV park. Plenty of space between sites, friendly atmosphere and right next to a lake. Wish it was closer to where we live. We would definitely stay here again. We camped at Castle Lakes Campground Resort in a Fifth Wheel.

Beautiful setting with most sites in the trees as well as a few sites in an open parking lot area where you can use a satellite dish. It is a wide and level gravel road for 4 miles to reach the campground. Very clean laundry with 4 washers and 4 dryers. The owners are very friendly, we rented a jeep to drive the gorgeous Alpine Loop. We also caught 3 delicious trout in the lake which cost us $7 to fish. Would definitely stay here again and stay longer. Cell phones do not work here. We camped at Castle Lakes Campground Resort in a Fifth Wheel.

The park is located on the Alpine loop, dirt road for 4 miles to park on winding mountain road past lake San Cristobol. Very narrow drive around park to site, very difficult with larger camper. Sites difficult to get into and close together. No cell signal for any phone service, only spot is 4 miles back down dirt road to paved road. Wi-Fi great, only available at lodge, but works great. Lake city is a very small town, and only has a general type store, very expensive, and very limited. Closest store 45 minutes away. That was all the negatives, the positives: views were amazing, well worth all the negative. Easy access to alpine 4x4 loop. Fishing in private ponds were great, we fished pretty much everyday. and came home with tons of trout. Lake San Cristobol is beautiful! The owners were extremely friendly and helpful. The teenage girls who were very upset and crying the first day we were there because of the no cell service and the remoteness, are already wanting to return! We camped at Castle Lakes Campground Resort in a Fifth Wheel.

As before, this is a great campground for seeing the San Juan Mountains (Alpine Loop) by 4x4, ATV or motorcycle. The Owners are great- they have genuine concern for your satisfaction. We were able to get satellite (thru the trees) from our site but that is probably not possible at all sites due to the trees/mountains. Those in the group that fished on the private lakes caught their limit (4 fish/person/day). Laundry was clean and usually busy. Showers/restrooms were clean. There are fire rings at each site which for us, could be limited due to the smoke. The Wi-Fi works in and around the lodge but can be slow. We camped at Castle Lakes Campground Resort in a Motorhome.

We have been going to Castle Lakes for the past 16 years and we love every minute of it. The owners have been wonderful to us every year. We started out in our own tent, went to one of their trailers on site and now have moved up to our own 5th wheel. We have not had any problems with any aspect of the campground. The view is outstanding! And the ease to take your Ranger, 4x4, or Jeep on road trips up the mountain is real nice. We camped at Castle Lakes Campground Resort in a Fifth Wheel.

This is the place to stay if you are riding motorcycles/ATVs/4x4s on the Alpine Loop. You can ride right out of the camp onto the loop- no need to trailer to a drop off point. The campground does have rules as previously posted- 5mph max speed in the park. Exceed the 5mph and expect the staff to let you know about it. Interior roads are dirt, 5mph speed limit helps keep the dust down and children safe. There are 2 stocked private lakes on site ($6./person/day to fish with a 4 fish limit, no state license required). We hade 4 folks in the group fish with ~ 50% catch rate on 12 to 14” rainbows and browns. Sites are spaced nicely apart with great shade. We were able to get 34ft rig into our site with slide on both sides and awning out. Picnic table and fire rings at each site. Restrooms were clean. Laundry was clean and all machines working. There is one local (Denver) channel. We were able to get Dish reception through the trees. WiFi available at the lodge. Looked at other campgrounds in the area, this one has the most shade and greatest distance between sites. We will stay here again. We camped at Castle Lakes Campground Resort in a Motorhome.

Nice park. We would stay again. A little dusty, but with the lack of rain, it was to be expected. Owner came down after hours and helped with lack of water problem. My fault! Sites had plenty of distance between them so you didn't get the "parking lot" feel but close enough to visit with your neighbors. We camped at Castle Lakes Campground Resort in a Tent Trailer.

One of the most beautiful settings for an RV campground that I've experienced in 14 years of camping. Extremely quiet and peaceful. Owners are very accommodating and friendly. Trout fishing in private lake is excellent. Many sites are occupied by repeat visitors that spend 1-2 months each summer. Weekly potluck dinner at small pavillion for all campers. Very nice rigs and friendly campers. We camped at Castle Lakes Campground Resort in a Travel Trailer.
