The primary obligation for an RV park is to give you a flat, mostly level site to park on and reliable utilities to connect to. This park failed us on the first point. We have been to over 160 RV parks and site 31 at Sugar Loafin Campground is perhaps the worst site I have ever tried to park on. Not only is it not level both front to back and side to side, but it looks like a bomb site with potholes, high spots, etc. At least bring in some gravel and fill in the holes so that it's sort of flat. I looked at other sites and many of them look like site 31. Another thing I have never experienced is the per person, per day charge on top of the daily rate. So apparently the daily rate includes zero people. For each person that plans to stay there, you will be charged an additional $4 per person, per day. Given that 90% of campers will contain 2 people, add $8 per day to the daily rate. Enjoyed Leadville, not so much with Sugar Loafin. With taxes we paid just shy of $50 per day for a seriously sub-par site. No thanks. Oh, and there is no WiFi, seriously, $50 per day and no WiFi. We camped at Sugar Loafin' RV Campground & Cabins in a Motorhome.

This RV is just outside of Leadville. It is in a beautiful region and is very quiet. Although the RV section is about half full, it was perfectly quiet here last night. Yes, the park is rustic: it is primarily dirt with parking strips. However, there are trees everywhere, unlike some of the other parks we've visited, which were gravel parking lots. They do a nightly ice ice cream gathering ($1.50 each, all you can eat!), which is rather nice of them. This is a family business that has been around for 51 years. We camped at Sugar Loafin' RV Campground & Cabins in a Travel Trailer.

Tips for other Campers:

The nearby town of Leadville is delightful. It is very 1880s historic with lots to see, plenty of restaurants. Much of the town has been modified to accommodate walkers/wheelchairs (with somewhat steep but manageable ramps).

We really liked this park a lot. As others have said, it does have tight spots but no more so than many other RV parks out there. If you set your expectations you will not be disappointed. Some sites have full hook-ups, others only have water and electric (no sewer). But there is a dump station on site. Free ice cream social every night, very friendly and helpful staff, very clean and right in the woods. There are quite a few tent campers here also. Parking my truck was tight, but I was able to do it at my site (I have a 35' trailer, so it took up every bit of the site's length). The site was level from side to side, but had a steep downslope to the front. The main RV spots in the center of the park appeared to be more level. This is the closest campsite to turquoise lake without staying at the state campgrounds around the lake. We camped at Sugar Loafin' RV Campground & Cabins in a Travel Trailer.

Tips for other Campers:

Great fishing at twin lakes and Turquoise lake. Great hiking in the area. For biking or running/walking, the Mineral Belt trail is a must see. It's 6 miles of trail around old mine equipment and history. The mining museum is really neat, allow for a few hours. Tennessee Pass cafe has great food, good Colorado beer selection, and a great atmosphere. Periodic Brewery is also a good place to stop for micro beer lovers.

We had 10 families in our group & they were very accomodating putting us all together. A rustic, natural RV park, which we liked, like camping in the forest with electrics, water, hot showers, & laundry. We would definitely come back. Overall Rating:

A full hookup campground with great views of the highest mountain in Colorado. Those are the great things about this RV campground. Everything else was average at best. The sites were dirt, we needed to use blocks for additional leveling, and the roads were fairly tight. But, if you want to stay in the Leadville area in an RV, it is one of two choices and certainly doable. I must say there were two problems during our three night stay. The first was the mix up in site reservations by the campground. We had two 50 amp sites reserved and one of them was double booked for one night. The second program was our section of the county lost power for about an hour one evening. We camped at Sugar Loafin' RV Campground & Cabins in a Fifth Wheel.

The only thing this park has going for it is location. For larger rigs, they are the only choice in this area. The park is the dirtiest, most crowded park we have ever visited. There were campers and tents and vehicles crammed into everywhere. The roads are dirt and there is no attempt to control speed so dust billows. The staff consists of a couple of young adults who do not assign the sites by size and need. The dumpsters overflowed and campers placed bags of trash on the ground for several nights, a bear hazard. The staff did not address the situation. People parked regular construction trucks on the grass, sleeping in the cabs with no camping equipment. Some owner involvement and presence, along with some clean-up and care, could make this a nice park. We will not return to this park. Busy time of year for this park as it was full of cyclists for the Leadville 100. First impression when entering the park is that of a barely maintained Forest Service Campground. Dusty pot holed interior roads. Check in was fast (confusing the way they break down the charges, they say it saves the guest $$), we were led to a "drive through" site that was impossible to negotiate with our rig due to the layout of the road and the very close sites. I was told to back in, I am pretty good at backing the trailer but this site was to tight. I chose a back in site and it worked out fine. The site had two cement strips for the RV's wheels, however the our two vehicle was in dirt and several inches lower then the concrete strips. The trailer was level, all good. The sites are very close together, the tent sites had more room. The weeds and grass were ankle deep and higher. The bathroom/showers were very clean. WiFi is available in the rec room, very strong and fast. We would stay here again. We camped at Sugar Loafin' RV Campground & Cabins in a Travel Trailer.

Very friendly staff. Restrooms and showers were very clean. The campsites were a little confusing and the roads could use some gravel. But it was close to the most beautiful golf course I have ever played. I would camp here again. We camped at Sugar Loafin' RV Campground & Cabins in a Motorhome.

We were assigned a site that was very difficult to access. They sent a young man to help guide us in. God bless him- he was nice - but not experienced with how to maneuver a large fifth wheel. It's a good thing a couple of spots were open on the other side of the road - otherwise we would not have been able to get in the site. And, I had made a reservation about a month earlier. The site was mostly dirt - it could be much improved with gravel or something other than dirt. They have a weird pricing system here. They charge by the site and by the number of people in the party. Beautiful scenery around Leadville. Park itself is very rough looking although the tent sites look more appealing and have the feeling of a forest campground. We were told we could not get full hookups so opted for water and electric only. The roads are very rough, not maintained with very little gravel left. Spots are extremely tight and unfortunately our view consisted of a travel trailer on one side and a motorhome on the other. Showers and restrooms very nice. There is no Wi-Fi, cable. Walking the dog was problematic since the dog walk area was a tiny patch of scrub brush with some broken glass here and there. We had to leave after one night because of altitude sickness, so be aware of you may be susceptible. The trip to Leadville from the interstate was quite a challenge for the 37 foot motorhome. Some harrowing turns on a long uphill pull to over 10,000 feet. Certainly not a relaxing trip for us. Some TLC on the grounds would go a long way here. We camped at Sugar Loafin' RV Campground & Cabins in a Motorhome.

Very clean restrooms. The sites are a little tight, as others have noted. The season is very short and I guess they need to make their money while they can. Owner separates taxable site fees from non-taxable 'people' fees, so the total cost can be a little confusing. It all works out and the owner does it so campers pay less taxes. We did have to pay $6/night for an extra vehicle. Very helpful staff in the camp store. Fun golf course a mile away. We camped at Sugar Loafin' RV Campground & Cabins in a Travel Trailer.

Had a so called pull- thru site. the TT next to us was so close that our sewer hose was under there slid out.Pull- thru sites were so tight that we had to ask our neighbor to move his truck so we could make our turn to pull out. Asked management if they could trim a few tree limbs that were rubbing against our unit. I was told they do not trim limbs. Other sites had limbs that were trimmed. All in all a very negative experience. In 25 years of RVing this park is in the top 5 worst we have stayed in. Save your money stay else were. The biggest negative is tightness of the sites. Big fifth wheels will have problems parking if the place is full. No Wi-Fi. Wired Internet service is in the rec room and it's fast. Mosquitoes can be a problem in June. The office staff was helpful when we needed to extend our stay one night. The location was right for us. Interior roads are gravel and there are concrete strips for parking, picnic tables and fire pits at sites. Water, sewer and electricity worked well. It is a ways away from any major highways so no traffic noise. Sites are a lot closer than I prefer and noise from neighbors could easily be a problem. No Wi-Fi or cable TV. While we were there the park was very quiet, but also a long ways from being full. Part of the park has numerous pine trees. We were given an escort to our site. All the staff we contacted were friendly and helpful. On clear moonless nights the altitude allows for a great view of the sky. Note there is a $7.50 per person charge in addition to the $34.00 fee per site We camped at Sugar Loafin' RV Campground & Cabins in a Travel Trailer.
