The rate reflects a 50% Senior Pass discount. This campground has a lot going for it. The sites are very nice and well separated. Because of the lack of vegetation, there is not a lot of privacy but the separation makes up for that. The interior roads are either paved or gravel and the sites are gravel. The views of the surrounding mountain are wonderful. Even though it is on the lake, the lake is not a feature since it is not visible from the camping sites. There are three loops, but, during our visit in mid-September, only the Sage loop was open. This is the loop most suited to RVs, but there are some RV sites in the other loops. The campground is far enough the highway that road noise is not a big issue, particularly in the Sage Loop. The campground hosts were very nice and helpful. Be aware that, although there is water, you are not supposed to use a hose to fill RV tanks, so you might want to fill your tank before you arrive. The water outlets do not have threaded bibs. If you have a “cheater” you can attach a hose, but the signs say that it is not allowed. Make your own choice. There is a dump station, but the charge to dump is $10 even for campers. We elected to not use the dump station and go to a local campground where we could dump and legally fill with fresh water. Since it is a National Forest Service Campground, generators can be used anytime except during nighttime quiet hours. There are vault toilet and no showers. During our mid-September visit, this was the only National Forest Service campground open in the area. It will close on September 28. It is a good site for driving beautiful Independence Pass over to Aspen or to visit Leadville. The campground filled during our weekend visit, so arrive early. As noted, the campground is not really in Leadville, it is closer to Granite or the very small town of Twin Lakes. We would definitely stay here again. We camped at Whitestar Campground in a Motorhome.

This park is full almost every weekend and for good reason! The sites are well forested but close enough to Twin Lakes that we can portage our kayaks over the hill and into the water. The sites were big enough for us to have a big RV plus tent all in one place. The camp hosts are nice and laid back, even suggesting their favorite "spots" for hiking and paddling. We camped at Whitestar Campground in a Tent.

The GPS states that White Star Campground is in the town of Granite, CO, just 15 miles south of Leadville. And what a hidden gem of a place to behold! Well spaced sites on level, gravel pads nestled among pines and Sagebrush. Lovely views of Twin Lakes. There are Boat/kayak rental available at the boat ramp and miles of hiking/biking/fishing opportunities to explore. We camped here in the Sage Loop. We camped at Whitestar Campground in a Fifth Wheel.

Outstanding park with open, level sites surrounded by stunning views of Twin Lakes and Mt. Elbert. This is one of the most beautiful areas to fish, hike, bike or just plain relax! The restrooms were clean and the camp hosts are friendly and helpful. The sites are well spaced, on level gravel pads and the walk-in tent sites are a top pick with the best views in the park. Be sure to bring your own water and be prepared to pay $10 to dump. We camped here in a 37 foot rig and stayed in the Sage Loop and had no troubles at all. We did walk the other two smaller loops in the park and they were equally as nice. This park is truly in the town of Granite--about 16 miles south from Leadville and a stunning drive over Independence Pass to Aspen for a day trip or adventure. We would stay here again in a heartbeat! We camped at Whitestar Campground in a Fifth Wheel.

I camped here twice in August. Spent 2 days in a tent first. Then overnighted here in my trailer on my way back from Vega SP. I camped on the Sage Loop both times. Sage Loop (sites 1-28) has been remodeled. Roads in this loop are paved. The backends are long and easy to get into. There are pull through sites. Sites are large but there are few trees. Ridge Loop is wooded; has gravel roads and doesn't offer much for RVs. It does have fantastic tent sites. Valley Loop is closer to the road; has huge private sites and can accommodate most RVs. Whitestar fills on weekends so reservations are recommended. During the week you should be able to find a site with no problems. The one problem I had with this park was the number of loose dogs: one of which belonged to the head host. Unlike most hosts in NFS campgrounds, the hosts in this campground were almost invisible. They spoke only if spoken to. They seemed stressed and overworked. I doubt they will be back next season. There is a very nice dump which cost $10. This is a NFS, you don't get fee dumping when sites are $18. You can fill you fresh water sites at the dump for free. There is water on all the loops but you can not connect a hose to those faucets. We camped at Whitestar Campground in a Travel Trailer.

I have only good things to say about this campground. If you’re looking for rustic camping with an awesome view (one of the best I’ve seen), then Whitestar is the place! Plenty of trees, nice separation from the other campers and level parking. We were in 10 & 12 and, while the picnic table and fire ring were a slight hike to get to, it was worth the climb. If it’s windy, hang on to your paper plates! The panorama of the bottom of Independence Pass was spread out across the lake. If you’re fishing, you’ll have either a steep downhill grade to walk or you’ll need to drive around to the shore. We had some issues with too much Fluoride in water (that’s what the ranger said?), so we couldn’t drink it (It would have been nice to know that before we filled up our fresh water tank!). Be prepared for a $10 dump fee, even if you’re renting a spot in the campground. We camped at Whitestar Campground in a Motorhome.
