FHU back in site on the last week of operations there. Site was secluded with bushes separating sites on both sides and trees/meadow at the back of the site. Water/electric/sewer all worked well. The restroom had already been winterized for the season, but had no reason to use it. Site was level with room, though the fire ring and picnic table were a bit close to the trailer. Still, enough distance to have a good fire going. Staff was friendly, the general store was fairly well stocked; you could tell it was toward the end of the season. Thought prices might be discounted, not the case. Still, a good value and one of the best National Park experiences we've had in many years of camping in NPs. We camped at Morefield Campground (NPS) in a Travel Trailer.

Tips for other Campers:

Make sure you have plenty of fuel! Diesel prices inside the park were higher than average, and the one station outside was no better. Fuel up in Cortez or Mancos prior to entering the park. You'll be doing a lot of driving inside the park; it's 4 miles to Morefield, and another 11 miles to Farview Lodge, 15 miles to the most popular cliff dwelling sites.

We were lucky to get a reservation for 4 nights in Morefield with rather short notice. Our site was fairly private from others with a good amount of shade (I posted photos). The bathroom nearby was clean with flush toilets, cold running water and electric outlets. Morefield Village had a well-stocked store and gift shop. The coin laundry was clean. Showers were private and roomy, but one I used had a lot of mildew. Be sure to have the All You Can Eat pancakes at the Knife Edge Cafe. They're delicious and so big we couldn't eat more than our original serving. The 16 oz coffee is refillable all day either in the cafe or the Village store with your cup and receipt. The water at the bottle filling station in the cafe is very good - better tasting than the water in the campground. We camped at Morefield Campground (NPS) in a Travel Trailer.

Check in at the store, site has FHUs in the Ute loop. Site is short but had room to park the tow vehicle. No cable, no WiFi, no cell service, however could pick up a cell signal half-way down the mountain towards the visitor center. There is a $20 entrance fee to reenter the park unless you have the Golden Age Pass. The laundry room is clean with plenty of machines located near the store. Site is open sunny so satellite TV is good. Deer walked through the campsite every morning. Lots of good hiking trails. We stayed for a week. After driving all over the campground, we selected a site in the field at the front of the Walpi Loop off of Hopi Rd. There are very few big rig-friendly dry camping sites. Concrete curbs at the back of the sites make them all the more restricted. We camped at Morefield Campground (NPS) in a Fifth Wheel.

Tips for other Campers:

The climb up to the campground is steep and hard on transmissions. There had been a lightning strike a couple of days prior to our visit which knocked out wifi service and took the ATMs, credit card readers, and gas pumps offline throughout the Park. It would be good to be aware of that possibility! We saw a bear with two cubs on our way to the cliff dwellings and a bobcat on the other side of the canyon from Cliff Palace as well as plenty of mule deer by our trailer.

We stayed in the no hookup section of the park. As others have noted this is an older National Park campground and was not designed with large RVs in mind. It took us a couple of tries to find a site where we could get level, but to us that was a minor inconvenience. We really enjoyed our stay here, and we found the campground delightful. Quiet and peaceful, just as we like it. We were her 4 nights and in that time we never saw the campground get anywhere near full. This is the first campground we've been in where we found the WIFi useful. We even streamed Netflix in the evenings! It's a good thing too, as the cell reception was nearly non-existent. We camped at Morefield Campground (NPS) in a Motorhome.

The access roads are OK, but the bushes are not always trimmed. The sites are uneven dirt. We were in one of the few full hook-up sites, but they have only 30 amp and the water pressure is very low. Wifi is useless as is cell reception. Sites are not designed for big rigs (in spite of what they tell you on the phone) so getting into the site was a challenge and trees and bushes came very close to damaging the rig. There was barely enough room for our rig and truck. Our site was very private but some of the FHU sites are in the open and near access roads. We loved the quiet and the darkness at night. Our site had a picnic table and fire ring. Sometimes we saw deer in our area. This campground is really meant for small rigs and tents. We would not stay here again as the risk is too high for rig damage. We camped at Morefield Campground (NPS) in a Fifth Wheel.

Tips for other Campers:

We thought by staying in the park that we would be close to the cliff house ruins. Not so. It is still an hour to one group and 1.5 hours to the other...all through mountain roads that wind back and forth at a very high (8000 ft.) elevation. Visiting some of the ruins are physically challenging...interesting, but be sure you are healthy enough for this. The literature tells you of those that are difficult.

This is all about location, location, location. This is a no frills national park campground. As with most national park campgrounds, location is the reason you stay. The campground is 4 miles into the park and is a perfect location to explore Mesa Verde National Park. Within the first few hours of getting to our site, we saw a bobcat roaming the campground, which was very cool (and provided a great video opportunity)! The general store and adjoining outdoor cafe were very convenient, too. The wifi didn't work and AT&T had no reception. We camped at Morefield Campground (NPS) in a Fifth Wheel.

Tips for other Campers:

Be sure to visit the visitor's center immediately after setting up camp. The visitor's center has tour tickets, which are required to see the most desirable cliff dwellings. You will need tickets for Balcony House, Long House and Cliff Palace. They do sell out so you want to visit as soon as possible. Also, if you make it into Mancos, CO, Chavalos Mexican Food was very good.

Perfect location for a visit to Mesa Verde National Park as the campground is located four miles inside the national park. Once past the entrance station, the road climbs and winds as you travel towards the campground store where you register. The sites are back in and fairly easy to access. We had no phone service at our site but did at the back of the campground towards the amphitheater parking lot. We camped at Morefield Campground (NPS) in a Motorhome.

This campground is in the National Park but is managed by Aramark. Because we camped later in the season, we were in the host campsite - the host having left earlier in Sept. This was a very large site with 50 amp hookup. Unfortunately it was also next to the restroom & the garbage container. There was a constant odor from the air freshener & occasional nose from the garbage container. Other hookup sites were further away & really looked nicer although not as roomy. Very quiet & peaceful and the closest camping to the cliff dwellings. Lots of low oak trees that didn't provide shade but made our loop very attractive. The campground has free wifi but limited cell service throughout the park. We camped at Morefield Campground (NPS) in a Fifth Wheel.

You must get a reservation for the full hook-up sites. We had the first site, across from the first toilet. The space is a bit soft, but not terrible. It is also about a 30 minute drive from the primary attractions in the park.

However, the Morefield campground was reasonably private. We were visited by deer almost every day.

The only complaint we had was the generator noise from the non-FHU sites. It was only a problem on two of our 5 nights we stayed there, but a distraction we wish had not happened. Take a spot up the hill a bit. That will help. We camped at Morefield Campground (NPS) in a Travel Trailer.

We had a reservation and dry camped for 5 nights. We probably didn't need a reservation as there were many open sites. We were told to pick a site and since we are a big rig, the office staff advised us on several areas where we would fit. We drove around several times and finally found a level site where we would fit. Most of the sites fit campers 30ft or less easily. I agree that $30 does seem a bit high for dry camping but the campground is in the closest location for reaching the cliff dwellings all of which you have to drive to on the winding road with spectacular views. There is a campstore, cafe, free showers, gas station, laundromat, and dump station at the campground. Ranger programs were done nightly. Generators are allowed 6am-10pm. We enjoyed the sunsets and the deer. Would camp here again. We camped at Morefield Campground (NPS) in a Fifth Wheel.

We stayed in a dry site as there were no sites with electric available. All the sites are back-in. We have a 33 foot motorhome and finding a level site was a bit of a challenge. It is a large campground and there were lots of sites open. The restrooms was nicely spaced - close enough to walk to easily, and there were many nicely-spaced dumpsters. We camped at Morefield Campground (NPS) in a Motorhome.

For forty dollars I expected to see the ranger at least once, while I was in my site all day, to fine the non-paying camper three sites up. This was really irritating because this camper was using a site with full hook-ups illegally. He had taken another camper's reserved site without paying for it and then lied to the camper about why he didn't have his site stub. He also used the site across from him to park his truck without paying for that as well. He left early the next morning(6:30 am) before the campground manager came around checking the sites (7:15 am).

I ended up changing my site when I first came in due to the neighbor next to me commandeering my site's picnic table to dry out his large bed mattress. No enforcement to keep people with undesirable behavior in check. Didn't feel safe staying here.

As for the site I finally stayed in, it was screened with vegetation and was level, which is why I gave 3 stars and not 2. The sewer hook up was placed poorly, needing a 20 foot long hose to use. They did have two dump stations on the way out. We camped at Morefield Campground (NPS) in a Truck Camper.

Nice park and closest to the cliff dwellings. We got to choose our spot and had a nice one next to a grouping of trees. We felt like we had ample space and the ranger campfire program was pretty neat, talking about early visitors after it became a National Park.

There are all kinds of boondocking options from open field and neighborly, to secluded against the trees. I will stay here again. A little expensive for dry camping, but we didn't make reservations. Park Service says no reservations, but they do take them. We camped at Morefield Campground (NPS) in a Travel Trailer.

Tips for other Campers:

Balcony House is the best, but you have to be comfortable with heights as there are some long ladders and drop-offs on this tour. We took all three tours and each tour guide was so different. Take as many as you can. Also, the drive out to Long House was just so beautiful. Take it even if you don't take the tour.

No full hookups were available so we had to dry camp. Price is high for no electric or water hookup. Site too narrow and short. We could barely fit the truck next to the site. They need more full hookup sites. Bathrooms were clean. Great access to the park. Quiet area and deer nearby. We camped at Morefield Campground (NPS) in a Fifth Wheel.
