Perfect location for a visit to Mesa Verde National Park as the campground is located four miles inside the national park. Once past the entrance station, the road climbs and winds as you travel towards the campground store where you register. The sites are back in and fairly easy to access. We had no phone service at our site but did at the back of the campground towards the amphitheater parking lot. We camped at Morefield Campground (NPS) in a Motorhome.

This campground is in the National Park but is managed by Aramark. Because we camped later in the season, we were in the host campsite - the host having left earlier in Sept. This was a very large site with 50 amp hookup. Unfortunately it was also next to the restroom & the garbage container. There was a constant odor from the air freshener & occasional nose from the garbage container. Other hookup sites were further away & really looked nicer although not as roomy. Very quiet & peaceful and the closest camping to the cliff dwellings. Lots of low oak trees that didn't provide shade but made our loop very attractive. The campground has free wifi but limited cell service throughout the park. We camped at Morefield Campground (NPS) in a Fifth Wheel.

You must get a reservation for the full hook-up sites. We had the first site, across from the first toilet. The space is a bit soft, but not terrible. It is also about a 30 minute drive from the primary attractions in the park.

However, the Morefield campground was reasonably private. We were visited by deer almost every day.

The only complaint we had was the generator noise from the non-FHU sites. It was only a problem on two of our 5 nights we stayed there, but a distraction we wish had not happened. Take a spot up the hill a bit. That will help. We camped at Morefield Campground (NPS) in a Travel Trailer.

We had a reservation and dry camped for 5 nights. We probably didn't need a reservation as there were many open sites. We were told to pick a site and since we are a big rig, the office staff advised us on several areas where we would fit. We drove around several times and finally found a level site where we would fit. Most of the sites fit campers 30ft or less easily. I agree that $30 does seem a bit high for dry camping but the campground is in the closest location for reaching the cliff dwellings all of which you have to drive to on the winding road with spectacular views. There is a campstore, cafe, free showers, gas station, laundromat, and dump station at the campground. Ranger programs were done nightly. Generators are allowed 6am-10pm. We enjoyed the sunsets and the deer. Would camp here again. We camped at Morefield Campground (NPS) in a Fifth Wheel.

We stayed in a dry site as there were no sites with electric available. All the sites are back-in. We have a 33 foot motorhome and finding a level site was a bit of a challenge. It is a large campground and there were lots of sites open. The restrooms was nicely spaced - close enough to walk to easily, and there were many nicely-spaced dumpsters. We camped at Morefield Campground (NPS) in a Motorhome.

For forty dollars I expected to see the ranger at least once, while I was in my site all day, to fine the non-paying camper three sites up. This was really irritating because this camper was using a site with full hook-ups illegally. He had taken another camper's reserved site without paying for it and then lied to the camper about why he didn't have his site stub. He also used the site across from him to park his truck without paying for that as well. He left early the next morning(6:30 am) before the campground manager came around checking the sites (7:15 am).

I ended up changing my site when I first came in due to the neighbor next to me commandeering my site's picnic table to dry out his large bed mattress. No enforcement to keep people with undesirable behavior in check. Didn't feel safe staying here.

As for the site I finally stayed in, it was screened with vegetation and was level, which is why I gave 3 stars and not 2. The sewer hook up was placed poorly, needing a 20 foot long hose to use. They did have two dump stations on the way out. We camped at Morefield Campground (NPS) in a Truck Camper.

Nice park and closest to the cliff dwellings. We got to choose our spot and had a nice one next to a grouping of trees. We felt like we had ample space and the ranger campfire program was pretty neat, talking about early visitors after it became a National Park.

There are all kinds of boondocking options from open field and neighborly, to secluded against the trees. I will stay here again. A little expensive for dry camping, but we didn't make reservations. Park Service says no reservations, but they do take them. We camped at Morefield Campground (NPS) in a Travel Trailer.

Tips for other Campers:

Balcony House is the best, but you have to be comfortable with heights as there are some long ladders and drop-offs on this tour. We took all three tours and each tour guide was so different. Take as many as you can. Also, the drive out to Long House was just so beautiful. Take it even if you don't take the tour.

No full hookups were available so we had to dry camp. Price is high for no electric or water hookup. Site too narrow and short. We could barely fit the truck next to the site. They need more full hookup sites. Bathrooms were clean. Great access to the park. Quiet area and deer nearby. We camped at Morefield Campground (NPS) in a Fifth Wheel.

Level site surrounded by grove of short Gambel Oak trees. Lots of wooded space between neighbors. Mule deer wandered past the site every evening - the kids loved it. Very quiet. Easy walk to the bathrooms. We got to choose our own site - the campground rarely fills up. Glad we found a site that was shaded. Some sites have no shade and get as hot as the surface of the sun in late afternoon in August. No lights on the roads meant a sparkling night sky. Saw shooting stars and Milky Way nightly. Knife Edge Trail adjacent to the campgrounds. We will definitely come back here on our next trip to Mesa Verde. We camped at Morefield Campground (NPS) in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

Hike the Knife Edge Trail at sunset. Quick walk down the road from the campsites. Pretty easy hike through beautiful landscape with breathtaking views of Montezuma Valley. Our 5 year old walked the trail pretty easily - there is some uneven, rocky terrain and it comes close to the edge of the mesa. But she had a fantastic time. Very doable for those who do the Balcony House tour.

$15 rate reflects national parks senior pass. Maintenance in the campground is poor. All sites are overgrown with grass/weeds. Understand that campground is ran by concessionaire, which is why it is in such rundown shape. They do have water spigots inside the restrooms, that you can hook your hose to, to fill your water tanks. Good place to stay and see park. They do have some full hook up sites available, but call ahead. Fuel at campground check in is cheapest around. Generator hours are 6am to 10pm. It is a great setting in the park and we would go back. Few sites are level even for our 25 ft motorhome. It looks as if there is a lot of deferred maintenance. The grass needs mowing desperately and there are gravel pads/areas at each spot but good luck actually finding them since they are so overgrown. The fresh water available has no end on the hose so you need to go the store and ask them if you can use there spigot. They are more than willing to do so. Of course, if you want to camp in the park it is the only choice and we did love it. Just a heads up. We camped at Morefield Campground (NPS) in a Motorhome.

For all of the reasons already stated this is a beautiful park and a great place to stay as a home base to see Mesa Verde National Park. What is not spelled out is that this campground is at the top of a mountain. The road is good getting up there, but it is a mountain road with switchbacks and wonderful views from a mountain road. My point is that if you are going to use this as a base from which to visit the area - Durango in one direction and Arches National Park in another, you may want to find a more 'convenient' spot. But for camping with nature with the benefit of full hook-ups, this is your place. I gave it a 9 because of a less-than-friendly know-it-all Aramark clerk at check-in. Ignore her if you get her and have a great camping experience. We camped at Morefield Campground (NPS) in a Motorhome.

Beautiful park. Lots of space between sites, similar to a state or national park, rather than a traditional commercial RV park. Wi-Fi available throughout – really impressive for the size of the area they cover. However the Wi-Fi devices are located at the bathrooms, so if you’re far away from the bathroom your signal may be weak. Wi-Fi performance in the evening is adequate. The only downside is that much of the campground is in hilly country and many of the sites slope to one side significantly – probably for drainage. We had to try three sites before finding one that only required 2-3 yellow blocks under the low wheels of the trailer. The others would’ve required 5 blocks or more to get level. The campground up 1,000 ft of elevation higher than the park entrance 4 miles away and 10 miles from the town of Cortez, so there is no AT&T cell signal – probably not for other vendors either, but I can’t say for sure. Rate reflects a senior discount (over 62 years old) We camped at Morefield Campground (NPS) in a Fifth Wheel.
