Decent Campground. The site was okay with a nice grassy area between sites. The staff is pleasant. Quiet. Good AT&T cell & 2 bars of LTE data. I was here visiting the Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park. We camped at Montrose / Black Canyon Nat'l Park KOA in a Motorhome.

Heaveled driveway and RV spaces. Nothing fancy here- just your basic KOA Park. No grass anywhere. We camped at Montrose / Black Canyon Nat'l Park KOA in a Motorhome.

2 blocks from US-50, 20 min from Black Canyon of the Gunnison NP, 30 miles from The Million Dollar Highway in Ouray. There is one very abrupt speed bump right at the entry to the CG. The roads and sites are gravel. Sites are level with good utilities, shade, and nice spacing (unusually nice for a KOA). They have a store, pool & more. They recycle plastic, glass & aluminum. Staff is very nice. We camped at Montrose / Black Canyon Nat'l Park KOA in a Fifth Wheel.

Tips for other Campers:

Don't miss the breathtaking Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park. It is so much more dramatic than it's siblings in Arizona and Utah.

Signage coming in here is terrible, one small dirty sign on the main road. Once you make the turn off Route 50, there is no signage at all to direct you. We had to stop midway down the street to ask someone where the park is. She said she has given directions lots of times. The park itself is clean, roads are gravel, and sites are reasonably level and spaced well. There are trees to offer some shade. There is a speed bump coming into the park that is jarring, even when you go over it at 2mph. Wifi is, as others have said, down more than up, and very slow when its up. Cable is great. We camped at Montrose / Black Canyon Nat'l Park KOA in a Motorhome.

We only stayed one night because it was the week of July 4th and we did not have reservations. Had to move to a different camp ground in Montrose for a few more days. This is a KOA campground and is acceptably nice. However, the sites are very tight. We camped at Montrose / Black Canyon Nat'l Park KOA in a Motorhome.

Okay park. Tight turns and short pull throughs except for "superior" sites which seemed okay. Mostly permanents stay here. Sites are level, full hookup 30/50 amp with cable. Wifi is useless. Has a dog park and walk but it seems that the permanents don't pick up after their animals. Poop everywhere including inside the dog park. Management either needs to enforce this or pick it up themselves. Will stay somewhere else next time. We camped at Montrose / Black Canyon Nat'l Park KOA in a Motorhome.

Overall Rating:

This KOA is small-to-moderate sized, nicely laid out, easy to navigate and all new-looking gravel. Office management was pleasant and efficient. Our site (#13) was a pull-through, big enough for our small RV and tow car, and had good hookups including cable (which we didn't use). They have a pool (but it was closed for the season), nice bathrooms and laundry room. The free WiFi was down more than up, and slow when it was up. Verizon was 2 bars of 4G, so, adequate. We would stay here if we came to Montrose again. We camped at Montrose / Black Canyon Nat'l Park KOA in a Motorhome.

Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park is really nice and if you don't do any hiking, can be seen in one day. We ate at Horsefly Brewery (excellent) and Ted's Steak House (also excellent). Good variety of services in Montrose.

Pull through shady gravel site. KOA had pool and hot tub and games. We stayed here and drove over to Ouray and Silverton (30 minutes to Ouray). Roads were a little tight. Very nice park in a nice little town. Would stay here again. We camped at Montrose / Black Canyon Nat'l Park KOA in a Fifth Wheel.

Ouray Hot Springs has been recently remodeled and the water is not very hot. However there is another one near Ridgeway (Orbis Hot Springs) which has nice warm/hot spring water.

My husband and I stayed here 5 nights. We chose Montrose because we were on our way to Durango. This Koa is one of the cleanest we've been to! We got 32 stations on our tv. The grass and all the trees were great especially if you have dogs! The host and workers are great! Bathrooms pool and laundry room are exceptional. Downtown is very close to the park. Mi Mexico restaurant was Great and nearby. A lot of shopping here. Telluride is over an hour away. A must see! We camped at Montrose / Black Canyon Nat'l Park KOA in a Travel Trailer.

Overall Rating:

Very clean & tidy park; the grass between sites was well-tended (we saw perhaps one dandelion!) and well-irrigated. Lots of shade trees, which we appreciated. Bathrooms somewhat older, but very clean and nice. We felt we had a good amount of space in our site, both lengthwise and side-to-side, and were able to enjoy spending some time outside at our picnic table. (We often don't in most private campgrounds.) Staff were helpful for the most part and always in sight. Yes, there are a lot of seasonals, but most of them are in a separate part of the campground from those of us staying temporarily. The campground was nearly full when we were there, unusual for this late in the season, but was nice & quiet. Great base camp for the Black Canyon and other sights nearby. We camped at Montrose / Black Canyon Nat'l Park KOA in a Travel Trailer.

Overall Rating:

Based on the prior reviews and overall ratings, we were excited to stay here. We didn't see what the hype is all about, unfortunately. We did like being very close to the Black Canyon of the Gunnison NP, which was our main reason for being in Montrose. We stayed in Ouray a few years ago and had an entirely different (better) experience.

Pros:

*In town, 20 min from NP

*Grass, nice spot, easy in and out

*Quick check in

*Talked to the manager, Debbie at one point about a rude/difficult full timer and she was understanding and apologetic

Cons:

*Not a great part of town, we were yelled at rudely when our nav app "Waze" sent us down the wrong street behind the KOA, and we actually felt unsafe

*About 50% of the park are residents; left early on weekdays, not very friendly, and didn't seem to have a lot of pride in their spots

*No dog run at all - need it!

*Lots of mosquitos = lots of bites, and of course realized it the next day after lots of itching

*No fire rings

*Hot tub was small, above ground. Was hoping for a nice, big, in-ground jacuzzi, so we didn't use it, but had hoped to. We camped at Montrose / Black Canyon Nat'l Park KOA in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

Dog kennel/day care place close, would use again. Pricey for 2 dogs at $4.50 an hour, ($55 our total) but safe, clean, and they were tired-a big plus. http://ironwilldoglodge.com 970/596-8709

Drive to the North Rim too! Bought fresh corn, homemade cherry pie filling, etc on the way in Hotchkiss. Lookouts amazing, not crowded.

Definitely drive to the bottom via Portal Road on the So side. We also did the National forest boat tour and it was great, well worth $16 and the time.

This is a very nice park and we had a great site. The only downside we saw was the large percentage of long term residents in the park who do not maintain their site well - and no enforcement by the owners to make them do so. We camped at Montrose / Black Canyon Nat'l Park KOA in a Fifth Wheel.

Tips for other Campers:

We were there solely for Black Canyon Of The Gunnison. Make sure you drive down to the river (turn right at the entrance station) -- curvy and a 16% grade - yes, you read that right! - but paved and good road. Our third visit and love it - did lots of photo work!
