I stayed here the first week of October 2017. In addition to the nightly fee, Colorado requires a $7 a day entrance fee...........or one can purchase a yearly fee for $70. I opted for the latter because I thought I was going to stay longer than 10 days. Rain chased me out in 6 days, but the pass is good for any Colorado State Park for a year from purchase date. I plan on staying in the park in the future. We camped at Ridgway State Park in a Travel Trailer.

This is the third year we have stayed two weeks at Pa Co Chu Puk where they have the full hookups. Camp hosts were very friendly and helpful. Nice trails to hike and it's off the beaten path where we can relax and enjoy nature and all the beautiful scenery. It's also a great base camp to go visit Silverton, Telluride, Ouray and many other nice attractions in the San Juan Mountains. We camped at Ridgway State Park in a Travel Trailer.

We spent two weeks at this park and enjoyed it more the longer we were there. Very large park with multiple campgrounds and multiple loops within those campgrounds. We stayed in the Pa-Co-Chu-Pu campground, so this review is specific to that one.

Mostly pull through sites and many had vegetation between the road and pad for an extra element of privacy. The pads are not overly long or wide for big rigs. We had to wedge our 43' RV in with some back and forth adjustments. We still couldn't fit all tires on the concrete, but not to worry since the rest of the parking area is blacktop. Sites vary a lot and ours was long and narrow, but with a really nice concrete sidewalk between the door area and the outdoor space situated at the rear of the RV.

You do get pretty consistent road noise from the highway, but depending on site, it's not horrible. When picking a site, the ones closest to the river are quietest and most of those offer more afternoon shade which is nice. This was our first time to this area and we loved it.

A couple of dings. There were dog bag stations, but no waste bags anywhere. A few plastic shopping bags crammed in them though. Sites are 30 amp only which wasn't enough to run more than one AC. It did cool off nicely at night though. Good AT&T signal, ok Verizon signal. We had clear sky for satellite. We will stay here again. We camped at Ridgway State Park in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

Ouray, Silverton, and Telluride areas are incredibly beautiful with amazing Jeep/ATV trails. Gorgeous hiking trails nearby as well.

Except for the Friday Farmers market (which is very nice) in Ridgeway, skip shopping there and instead drive to Montrose for better grocery stores and a nice selection of big chain stores.

Ridgway State Park is 20 miles south of Montrose in western Colorado on Ridgway Reservior. We spent 4 nights in the Dutch Charlie campground site 186 (30A electric site) in the Elk Ridge section. Spacious campsite with beautiful views. Pa-Co-Chu-Puk campground north of the lake on the Uncompahgre River has full hookup sites. Ridgway is 4 miles south with a few restaurants and basic groceries. Montrose is 20 miles north with Walmart and City Market grocery stores. We took the scenic drive over Owl Creek Pass (good dirt roads) and also visited Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park. Beautiful campground and area. We would stay at Ridgway State Park again. We camped at Ridgway State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

I stayed two days in Dakota Terraces and six days in Elk Ridge, so I can make some comparisons. First, this is an overall excellent state park and both sections are nice, but in the lower area (Dakota Terrace) sites are a little closer together and the lack of a lot of trees makes it seem slightly less private. Verizon coverage there is adequate. In the higher Elk Ridge, there are a lot of trees, but most of them are less than 10-15' tall and some parts of the area are thinner, so satellite was not a problem at all. Sites seem to be a bit more spread out and more private. I chose a site that was a little more open, so I even had a view of snow-capped mountains. I also got better Verizon data at Elk Ridge--4-5 bars on my jetpack. One nice thing is that both areas have a camper services building with three washers and three dryers, which means not so much waiting in line to get laundry done. Also, both areas have paved roads and paved camping sites with most also having paved patios, which keeps things nice and clean. Hosts did a good job of patrolling sites and making sure campers followed rules. I also noticed that a lot of trees had been trimmed so as not to overhang camp sites. We camped at Ridgway State Park in a Motorhome.

.We camped here for 5 days while exploring the area. As with most Colorado state parks this one is top notch. Our site 113 in the Elk Ridge section was quite secluded with picnic table and fire ring, but did need some serious leveling on our part. Hard to see your neighbors. The restrooms (pay $ 1.00 showers), showers and laundry were all clean and well maintained. The location is perfect for exploring the area with Ouray only a 15 min ride away. If in the area we would stay here in a heartbeat. momdoc. We camped at Ridgway State Park in a Motorhome.

Beware of chipmunks (I will get to that later)! We stayed in the Pa-Co-Chu-Puk section of the park, the most southern camping area at Ridgway. This is a great state park, especially if you are a fly fisherman. Most of our fellow campers were up early and on the Uncompagrhe River. It was centrally located for day trips to Black Canyon of Gunnison, Ouray, Silverton, and Telluride. Now, let's talk about the chipmunks. It seems that many of the folks who have camped at this park in the past have fed the chipmunks. On three separate occasions, I saw chipmunks jumping into my truck chassis and fifth wheel chassis. Luckily, I did not have any problems with them chewing but I assume there are some who have had problems. I know there is not much you can do but maybe not feeding them will help others in the future. We camped at Ridgway State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Nightly rate does not include daily use fee of $7. We ended up buying the annual state park pass for $70. We camped in Dakota Terrace above the reservoir. Elk Ridge area is higher up on the hill. Our site was a fairly level, pull through with 30amp. Some sites are back-in and some have covered picnic tables. There are plenty of water spigots; they allowed us to fill our tanks. A dump station is available. The campground hosts were friendly and helpful and sell firewood $5 and ice$2 There is a laundromat in the park. The visitor center is nice with lots of info about hiking/biking trails in the park and things to do in the area. This park is a good base for Ouray, Ridgway, Telluride and Montrose. We would camp here again. We camped at Ridgway State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

We stayed in Pacochupuk Loop H, 232. Some spots had metal shelters which were nice. As others have mentioned, grass (and cactus) isn't mowed, but we did not find this to be an issue with lots of paved sidewalks through camp. Nice well-designed campground. Great trout fishing at river nearby. We found the nearby town of Ridgway to be utterly charming--perfect town park for kids, great food, groceries. From here we also drove to Ouray, Telluride and Black Canyon of the Gunnison. There is laundry in this loop and a vending machine but that's about it. Flip side of lack of services was that it was really nice and quiet. Would definitely stay here again. This loop had water, sewer, and 30 amp electric. We camped at Ridgway State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Price does not include park access fee of $7 per day.
I stayed here for a week and had to move a few times due to unavailability of a site for the entire stay. Sites are roomy and some are situated so that you have a feeling of privacy. Sites were fairly level. Camp hosts were friendly and helpful.
There is some noise from 550 but it quiets down at night.

Cell phone coverage is poor but it works. My Jetpack worked occasionally. Satellite reception was okay but receiving HD was iffy. We camped at Ridgway State Park in a Travel Trailer.

There are three sections at Ridgway, each quite different. Elk Ridge is quite high up and heavily wooded. Dakota Terraces is at lower elevation and mostly grass and small shrubs. Pa-Co-Chu-Puk is a few miles away and is very close to the highway, but has full hookups (the others only have 30A electric). We stayed at both Elk Ridge and Dakota Terraces in our motorhome. Both areas have great views and spacious sites, however we found Elk Ridge to be much more attractive than Dakota Terraces. Unfortunately both these areas had the most un-level sites we've encountered in the more than 100 campgrounds and RV parks we've visited, making it impossible to get level even with many blocks under our wheels. We were also disappointed in the shower facilities. Most electric-only public campgrounds we've visited offer very good free showers, but Ridgway charges $1 per four minutes. We knew this going in, but were surprised how poorly the showers worked, considering we had to pay for them. There was very low water pressure, with several of the showers we tried just drizzling water out of the shower head. To top things off the campground was full of mice during our visit and quite a few made it into our motorhome. We checked with two difference camp hosts and they each said they'd caught more than 30 in their RV so far this season. At Elk Ridge we had very good AT&T data but poor Verizon. At Dakota Terrace both were poor and we needed our booster to get Verizon data to work (we never got AT&T data to work at Dakota Terrace). We found the campground to be beautiful and enjoyed walking the trails and lake with our dog, but the disappointing showers, un-level sites, and mice mean we likely won't return. We camped at Ridgway State Park in a Motorhome.

Another fantastic Colorado State Park. Plenty of room for the largest rigs and easily navigable roads throughout the park. Easy hook ups, and everything is clean. Our reserved site unfortunately had the table and fire ring on the wrong side for our trailer, but that did not stop us from enjoying our site. This park is a great deal, and a great park with a beautiful lake, river, hiking, biking. . .and lots more. Very close to other amazing sights and attractions as well. This is my third time to stay here at Pa Co Chu Puk, the only section with full hookups. Each time I enjoy it more and more. The $30 per night reflects having the annual Colorado State Park pass, otherwise there is a $7 a day entrance fee as well. I bought the annual pass for $75. It's well worth it and paid for itself the two weeks there, as well as the many other state parks we stay at in Colorado. We had a spot next to the river and it was absolutely beautiful. There is plenty of spacious area between campsites and trees for privacy. There are beautiful nature trails right in the park being in the foothills area of the San Juan mountains. The camp hosts do an outstanding job keeping things neat and orderly. Proximity to Ouray and Telluride is another great feature. I wish Colorado State Parks would let you stay more than two weeks at a stretch, I would stay here all summer I'd they would allow it. Make your reservation well in advance (up to 6 months ahead) as it stays full during the summer months. There usually is no camping available here without reservations, and it stays full all the time. We camped at Ridgway State Park in a Travel Trailer.
