Positives are incredible views of snow-capped mountains on all sides, and well-spread out sites. Also, close to paved bike paths and nearby towns, although far away enough for quiet and privacy. Elevation of 9,100 feet also means it was cool here when the rest of the Southwest was sweltering in a heat wave. Negatives are dirt roads with clouds of dust being kicked up by vehicles driving past. Luckily wind blew most dust away from me. I do not mind dirt campsites, but dirt roads are a problem when you must keep your windows open for ventilation. Another negative is that many sites are intended for tenters or small RVs, so are not very large. I fit my 32' motorhome in nicely because I could hang the rear over the back curb, but it would be hard to fit a larger RV or one with a toad into most spaces. Also, there is no dump station, so need to drive a couple of miles and pay $5. We camped at Prospector Campground - USFS in a Motorhome.

Date of Stay: June, 2017 - $23.00
Overall Rating:

We spent a night at Prospector and enjoyed the fairly level pull-through site. The pit toilets were scrupulously clean and had no unpleasant odor at all. The road in is dirt, and a little rough from frost damage. There is a great view of the lake from some sites, others are in meadows with small conifers. The pine beetle damage a number of years ago meant most of the trees had been cut down, but they are growing back. The stars were spectacular! We camped at Prospector Campground - USFS in a Travel Trailer.

There is a trail from Prospector down to the lake. Look for Wagon Wheel trail online to find a map.

Tips for other Campers:

Only 7 miles from Dillon & Silver throne. Not much further to Frisco. Huge amount of hiking and biking tracks in the area. Kayaking, SUPing on lake.

This campground in the White River National Forest near Dillon, Co. look over Lake Dillon and is surrounded my mountains. It's just beautiful. This is a dry camping area which has water near the entrance, spacious gravel sites with fire ring but there isn't a dump site on the campgrounds. We camped at Prospector Campground - USFS in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

This campground is near Frisco, Dillon, and several other high Rocky Mountain towns that are fun to visit. In fact, it's just a few miles from Vail, Keystone, and other ski towns. The mountains still had snow late in June.
