In the middle of the Big Cypress Preserve just off Hwy 41. 36 sites around a small lake. All sites paved, but entry can be a bit challenging for big rigs as all are perpendicular to the road and flanked by trees. Electric only. Hosts are no longer present. Close to all of Big Cypress along with Shark Valley (Everglades National Park). We camped at Big Cypress National Preserve - Midway Campground in a Motorhome.

Date of Stay: April, 2017 - $15.00
Overall Rating:

If you arrive in early April (beginning of off season) don't expect to find a camp host, as they apparently leave at the end of March. If you don't have reservations, you can apparently pay by cash (or check?) at the information kiosk. Sites that have been reserved will have a reservation sheet hanging from the electric box showing the person's name and occupancy dates; all other sites are available on a first-come basis. There were always some empty sites throughout our 8-day stay, so reservations in early April are probably not necessary. Be sure to fill up with potable water (near the dump station) before parking your rig. The roads and RV pads are paved and sites are level with fair separation but virtually no shade (more on the east side) or screening between sites. RV pads (all back-ins) are perpendicular to the road, but there's plenty of room (and firm ground) on the opposite side of the road to maneuver big rigs. All sites have 30 and 50 amp service, a picnic table and a fire pit. Tent sites also have a shelter over their tables. Thirty dollars per night seems high for sites that lack water or sewer connections. Restrooms are provided but they lack showers and were not being thoroughly cleaned throughout our stay. We also had no AT&T service but did have it several miles to the east along Highway 41. We encountered virtually no biting insects during first half of April-perhaps because it's been very dry for months. Containers to recycle aluminum and plastic are provided and the potable water tasted fine. Bring plenty of groceries as this is a fairly remote site. Camping sites surround a large barrow pit, but don't plan on swimming there as it contains several gators. We camped at Big Cypress National Preserve - Midway Campground in a Fifth Wheel.

This was a very nice National Preserve campground in the Everglades. We stayed for 3 nights and filled the days with great trips. Everglades City is a must and continue to Chokoloskee Island to the Smallwood Store. If you like to bike, the 15 mile Shark Valley bike trail is concrete and the nicest in any national park. The wildlife is incredible and we saw at least 50 alligators many not 5 feet from us. We camped at Big Cypress National Preserve - Midway Campground in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

Everglades City is a must and City Seafood crab cake sandwich was delicious. The museum was also very interesting, but the Smallwood Store Trading Post in Chokoloskee was, for $5/person, the coolest museum I have ever seen.

What a surprise. Out of the way, little noise even though it is right off of the Tamiami trail (Hwy 41). We used this as a stop-over on the way to the keys.

Electric only on each site, so you either need to travel with fresh water or fill up at the campground. Their fresh water spigot is near the dump station (but separated). Still not sure how many folks dump their tanks and then go to fill up with fresh water without hand washing.

Sites are spacious and wide open (few trees). Our site was the end of the right side as driving in and it was like we had a huge lawn for our front yard. Could only see one camper on the other side of the lake. The other sites would not have the same view.

Did not see any gators in the lake, but am sure they are there. However, a few miles down the road is the Nat'l Park observation area and there were dozens of them sunning on the beach below the observations decks. Lots of birds too. No need to take an airboat if you only want to see wildlife, just go to an observation deck.

We would stay again if in the area. We camped at Big Cypress National Preserve - Midway Campground in a Travel Trailer.

Midway is a small, but very clean and neat park. The hosts and work campers do a great job of keeping everything in good order. Despite the heavy rains prior to and during our stay, our site was well drained once the rain stopped. The sites are electric only, but water and a dump station are conveniently located near the front of the park. The restrooms are cleaned regularly, and are in excellent condition. There are no showers though. A resident gator and some babies live in the center pond, and more can be seen across US41 in the adjacent canal. Fish and birds are also abundant, as well as some turtles. The nearby visitors center is well worth a visit, to see even more gators and related exhibits. There is some road noise from the nearby highway, but it's not overly intrusive. We will most certainly be visiting here again. Tips for other Campers:

Everglades City, about 30 minutes away, is the closest place to find restaurants and a small grocery store. Larger stores require a trip west to Naples or east towards Miami.

Campground was very clean and well maintained. Bathroom facilities were very clean. All sites were level and open, with minimum privacy between sites. Campground is right off busy US 41, but quiets down at night. Cell reception was poor, but my antenna/amplifier system provided satisfactory ATT service. "Awesome!"

This is a real pearl of a campground. 36 big back-in sites with electricity around a central pond where alligators are living. Friendly and efficient camp host on site, and only a 2 mile drive to the Big Cypress Visitor Center. Beautiful situated with big, level grass sites. Very clean restroom (flush toilets) and showers. Will stay there again if our travels takes us this way, and we will then stay for more than one night. We camped at Big Cypress National Preserve - Midway Campground in a Travel Trailer.

Other reviewers said there was not a camp host in the park, but when we got here, there was. So I believe the host arrives in early November staying through the winter season. Beautiful park with flat even sites; 50 amps and water is available in the park, just not at your site. The idea is to reserve ahead of time but we were able to come and pick a spot and pay for it with cash or check. There are envelopes available but you can also stop at the Big Cypress Visitors Center and reserve a spot with a credit card. We used a Federal Senior Pass for the $15 rate per night. Agree with the earlier reviews. A very nice park. Paved roads and parking. Cement patio with table and grill. Beautiful views of the lake. Sites can be difficult to back into without getting on the grass, since they are 90 degrees to the road. There was no one here when we arrived and only 1 other rig showed up. Never saw any Park Rangers or security of any kind, and nothing happened. Placed the form and a check in the tube by the entrance. Note to the management: it is hard to find this CG on this site. It doesn't show up on the map and is really no where near Everglades City. I came by here years ago and knew it was here but struggled to find it. GPS says it is at 52388-54004 Tamiami Trail, Ochopee Fl, 34141. 25.85089, -80.99015. We camped at Big Cypress National Preserve - Midway Campground in a Motorhome.

The rate reflects a 50% senior discount with a Federal Senior card. This is a very pleasant and convenient campground that is well kept. The electrical is a strong 50 amp. There is a dump station and fresh water available. It is right along highway 41, but in our site as far back away from the highway as possible, the road noise was not objectionable. When we arrived there were only two other campers, and only two more came in for the night. As noted there were no camp hosts. The sign at the entrance is a bit confusing, it indicates that reservations are required, but that is not correct. There did not seem to be any reserved sites when we were there, but they can be reserved on the recreation.gov. We felt safe, but we probably would not leave the RV there alone because the campground is so close to the highway and there is really no security. It would be nice to have hosts. We did not use them, but the restrooms seemed modern and clean. There are no showers. We did not get a Verizon signal. Satellite is not a problem as the trees are short. We would certainly stay at this campground again. We camped at Big Cypress National Preserve - Midway Campground in a Motorhome.

Our rate is the Federal Senior Pass rate. We arrived with a reservation, well after dark and it was very, very dark. There are no camp hosts, but we had a reservation so we had prepaid. The campground was pretty empty for the one night we stayed. The restrooms were clean enough, but there are no showers. There is no water hookup, but there is a dump station. You come up on the entrance pretty fast, so come in slow. A camp host would be a big plus. The sites were level and paved, as was the campground road. We would stay overnight again. As the name suggests, this campground is midway between Naples and Miami. No commercial amenities nearby, but plenty of wildlife. The campground surrounds a small lake which is visible from each site. The loop roadway is paved as are the individual sites and a large greenbelt sits between the road and the lake. Neither the roadway nor the paved sites are very wide so backing in my 28 footer necessitated steering onto the lawn area. Not a problem in Dec., but may be an issue in the soggy season. No water at the sites, but there is a potable water station to fill up if necessary. Dump station on site. Surprisingly little noise from Hwy 41. Nice place to spend a day or two. This is a great stopover when traveling to/from the Florida Keys. Just 3 or 4 miles from the Oasis Visitors Center operated by the Park Service. Sites are large and have 50 amp service. Potable water, restrooms, and dump station are available. The campsites encircle a lake. Be careful of alligators if you have pets. When we arrived in the afternoon, we were the only campers here, which made it a little scary since we were in the middle of the Everglades. And, all host sites were empty. However another camper did come in during the night. As we said, this is a great stopover to visit a day or so and explore the Everglades. Be sure to visit the Visitors Center and observe the ‘gators from boardwalk along the canal, and to purchase local goodies from the gift shop. We will visit again on our way south. We camped at Big Cypress National Preserve - Midway Campground in a Motorhome.
