This park recently had a controlled burn which makes the grounds look desolate. The sites were well spaced. Most sites have 30 amps only. There are two campgrounds. The front campground has fairly good access, but the back campground has several overhanging limbs that present a challenge for taller rigs. The dump station is located near the back campground, so we elected to wait until we got to the next park to dump. We saw deer every day. The bath house is nice, but hard to get to. There is no direct path and no parking. This would make it very hard for a handicapped person. There were also no lights which would make going at night scary. The sites were very spacious. The park was quiet, I think you could star gaze on a clear night. It is a long way to any shopping or gas, better have what you need before entering the park. The ranger was very helpful. We camped at Mike Roess Gold Head Branch State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

We stayed in Sandhill camping loop that has a paved road and is more "big rig" friendly than the other two loops. Our packed sand site was very large and we had good satellite tv reception as well as good Verizon. The large park has a nice hiking path with a staircase down into the cool ravine as well as a swimming beach and kids playground with picnic pavillions. The dump station is near the end of the road next to the lakeside (no lake view) camping area. We camped at Mike Roess Gold Head Branch State Park in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

Drove 13 miles south on RT.21 to Blue Water Bay Restaurant i n Melrose for an excellent meal. Hitchcocks grocery on RT. 100 in Keystone Heights is the closest fully stocked grocery in the area.

I stayed in the Sandhill Caming Area over three days. The sites in this section are large and generally level. The access road is paved, the sites are hard-packed sand. The sites are private and quiet. There are several hiking opportunities although the rainy weather prevented me from doing much hiking. There were several OTA TV stations available and Verizon worked well most of the time. I look forward to a return visit to take advantage of hiking through this very large state park. We camped at Mike Roess Gold Head Branch State Park in a Motorhome.

The bathrooms were in good condition and clean but were closed most of the time we were there for painting. The sites were large and spacious but the sand was tracked everywhere in RV and car. We found very poor Verizon service and made trips into town to make calls. We camped at Mike Roess Gold Head Branch State Park in a Motorhome.

Overall Rating:

The previous reviews give excellent descriptions of the park conditions, and I have little to add to them. Our site was #1, and it was very spacious with a hiking trail on one side and a well spaced site on the other. Our water and 20/30 amp electric were well placed for our coach, and the packed sand was quite level giving our jacks little to do. The drive into the Sandhill camping area where we were is long, but pleasant. There are two loops in this section, with sites #1-19 along a paved road, and the rest of the sites on a packed sand road. The second loop is more suited to tents and smaller pop-ups than it is to motor homes or 5th wheels. The park was very quiet while we were there, and our site had a good satellite view and good AT&T and Verizon cell signals. We camped at Mike Roess Gold Head Branch State Park in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

There's very little in the way of stores and restaurants in nearby Keystone Heights, but there are many more choices 20-30 minutes away in Middleburg. We particularly liked the Cedar River Seafood Restaurant in Middleburg.

The previous review gave a good outline of the park. Be aware that some of the sites in Lakeview and Turkey Oak CG's have loops that you probably don't want to go down into in a tall Class A due to rough dirt/sand roads and low hanging branches. So do your research with a phone call to be sure. The sites are compact sand and grass that look pretty flat but some are sloped. The showers and bathrooms were clean with good hot water and good pressure. No Wifi but Virizon phone and Mifi work well. We were in site 39 and the water spigot is about 60-70' away from your rig with only 20/30 amp power at the sites. Dump station is down the road if you have to fill your fresh water tanks do it at the camp site. We will stay here again if we're in the area and there's room. We were in site #48 Lake View Loop . . No sewer at sites. There is one dump station on exit road on the way out.. The dump station is not within walking distance of the Lake View camping area. We would have to drag our portable grey water containers about a mile. Some of the Handicap sites have concrete pads. The park had very few campers when we were there so it was very quiet. Lake View Loop. 54, 55, 56 are pull through sites but have limited or no shade. 42-49 are tucked away on a small loop off the main road and are all shaded back-in sites. Sites 68-74 are mostly shaded and closer to the lake but no view from those sites either. I would be cautious of 68-71 as I noticed they were prone to flooding during the heavy rain. Some are a bit tough to back into because of the trees and overhanging branches but manageable with a helper to help you back in. The bathrooms were very clean and had at least two shower stalls each for men and women. I think all the sites have fire rings and picnic tables. It is a typical Florida state park set up. The sites are hard pack sand with leaf debris on the ground. Our outdoor mats kept the majority of the dirt from getting in the camper.

The park is over 2,000 acres so it is a big park and built back in the 30's by the CCC. There are plenty of paved roadway to ride bikes or walk on and plenty of back wood trails to hike as well. Several lakes on the property one of which is designated for swimming (but watch for alligators). We did not swim in it. That lake is a mile or more from the Lake View campground section. They do have an amazing picnic area near the swimming lake and a large activity building but we did not go into it. They have a set of nice cabins for people to rent who don't have RVs. You need to make reservation through Reserve America and there is a discount for our National Park Senior passes so the two nights cost us under $30. All-in-all we liked it and plan to go back in the winter months. We camped at Mike Roess Gold Head Branch State Park in a Motorhome.

Local maiden voyage of our new (to us) RV. Well maintained park with a few miles of local trails and the Florida National Scenic Trail passes through about 5.5 miles of the park. There's a lot of wildlife around such as deer, turkeys and tortoises. A bike trail heads from the park into Keystone Heights where it meets up with the Palatka-Lake Butler Rail Trail, 22 miles of which is currently available. We camped at Mike Roess Gold Head Branch State Park in a Motorhome.

Had not been to this park in five or more years. It seems to be in better shape than it was my last stay. Staff and volunteers were nice. The park it self is very clean and in good repair. Lots of trails and a deep gorge, deep for Florida anyway. We will be back. We camped at Mike Roess Gold Head Branch State Park in a Travel Trailer.

Stayed here a couple of nights. We were on a new ADA site that was concrete, otherwise sites are a packed sand/rock/coral. OTA tv was good with about 20 channels; however, Verizon was spotty 2 bars Max 3G with occasional 4G. Area is somewhat remote, but that is part of the charm. Very well kept and clean. We would stay here again. We camped at Mike Roess Gold Head Branch State Park in a Travel Trailer.

We try to camp here once a year. The lake is back open after years of being closed due to low water levels. There is a sandy beach area for swimming and canoe rentals are very reasonable. This is a park where the bathrooms and showers are always clean enough that we all shower in them instead of in the camper. Staff is continuously riding around so the park is VERY clean. On our last trip we had our Girl Scouts out and it was very challenging for them to find ANY litter to pick up, LOL! The trails are a highlight here. There are large ravines and streams with heavy shade. Very cool and scenic hike. We camped at Mike Roess Gold Head Branch State Park in a Travel Trailer.

Very interesting geological features. Located in a remote area among ancient sink holes that have filled with clear blue water. Park has several lakes with white sand beaches. A ravine is a feature in this park with a hiking trail that travels through the ravine along a creek that bubbles out of the ground and flows into one of the lakes. Park is set in pine flats and is busy in winter so book ahead. We would stay here again. We camped at Mike Roess Gold Head Branch State Park in a Travel Trailer.

Nice park. Well designed. Well kept facilities and friendly staff. Most sites are shady and level, dirt/sand. Hiking and biking is good. Interesting ravine to hike.
