Pros: Staff was very friendly, helpful and enthusiastic. 3 pavilions which were large with one that was huge and screened in. Nice small lake with very nice fishing dock and canoes to rent. There were alligators in the lake. Very nice walking trails. Wide roads including within the campgrounds and easy entry and exit at park entrance. Sites are brand new, huge, level with hard packed pea gravel. Lots of trees surrounding the campground with only a few at some campsites but no real shade trees to speak of at the sites so you'll have no problem getting satellite. Sites are not close to each other. Plenty of space and room between sites. Nice roads for bicycling. Grocery, shopping and fuel just 15 minutes away. The park has been there since 2006 but the campground just completed February 2018. Two dump stations right at entrance/exit to campgrounds. There are 3 full hookup/sewer sites that have accessibility with one belonging to the camp host. Cons: road is only paved to just past lake/pavilions. After that it is dirt and gravel including the campgrounds. Lots of dust! Water pressure was adequate but low. No playground for children. We are in the dry season but there was high levels of standing water just off the gravel sites. They will have some serious flooding problems during rainy season. The 3 pavilions are the only picnic areas but there are nice picnic tables at each site. Great place to just go and relax at a very beautiful park. We camped at Colt Creek State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Overall Rating:

This is a new campground and a relatively new State Park. Our check in went smoothly, even though the staff is still getting used to the system and our site had been reserved the day before, but the person never checked in/out. Caused a little confusion, but they figured it out and we made our way to our site. The drive to the campground is a bit long, but is mostly paved, only the very last bit is hard packed dirt. The campground road is not paved, but the sites are all gravel with a patio area to the side that has a picnic table, fire pit and charcoal grill. We had no trouble backing into our site and more than enough room for our 39' fifth wheel and truck. Our site was level and we had no problems with the hookups. Not all sites are as spacious, but in general the sites are roomy. There is ample space between sites, you don't feel crowded at all, but the lack of trees makes for little to no privacy or shade. There are a couple of pull throughs on the inside of the loop that would feel more private. The park itself is large with a lot of hiking opportunities, equestrian trails and a lake for kayaking or fishing. We really appreciated how quiet it was at night and I've heard the star gazing is nice, but we had cloudy weather our two nights there. My only real complaint was the dust, we were near the main road and people don't seem to obey the speed limit, even some people driving in the campground loop went a little too fast. I've been told that paving the road and campground loop are in the plans. While we were there the campground host drove around offering firewood and ice, which was nice, we didn't have to drive up to the gate for our wood. Our AT&T phones would work outside, but not very well in the RV. We used our Verizon Mifi, with a booster, and that worked just fine. We really enjoyed our stay and are looking forward to returning. We camped at Colt Creek State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

We really wanted to like this park since it just opened and since we've enjoyed several other Florida state parks. Unfortunately, reality did not live up to expectations. As with every other Florida state park we have visited, the staff is friendly and helpful. The campground itself is about two miles from the main gate. The paving on the main park road ends shortly before reaching the campground. The rest of the road and the campground loop road are dirt. The main campground (dirt) road continues on to an equestrian area and campground at the back end of the park. Apparently almost no one visiting this park is aware of common courtesy when driving down a dirt road: drive slowly so as not to kick-up a cloud of dust. Instead, vehicles (mostly trucks pulling horse trailers longer than many fifth wheels) fly down the main road well above the posted speed limit kicking up immense clouds of dust which then float over into the campground. If you're in one of the sites backing the main road (sites 27, 29, 31) be prepared to eat dust your entire stay! The rangers unfortunately seem to do nothing about the speeding. While individual sites are gravel, clouds of dust also billow off the campground loop road from cars and the wind. All the dirt will be a muddy quagmire when it rains. Along with a lack of paving, there is no grassy area or play ground for kids. We wish they would have spent a little extra money to at least pave the main road to the campground entrance. This park could have been so much more. Perhaps the state will eventually invest a little more to help this campground achieve its potential. We camped at Colt Creek State Park in a Motorhome.

Overall Rating:

Camped with my young grandsons in a 45 foot motor home. They enjoyed hiking in the woods and riding their bikes. There were many families with children camping during our stay. We camped during the dry season plus it was very windy during our stay. Conditions were very dusty. The last mile or so of the park road leading to the campground as well as interior roads were gravel. Since this was a new campground, shade is a premium. Satellite TV was no problem. Verizon cell was spotty. The restroom was very new. A clothes washer and dryer were installed, but both were inoperable. Disappointed the "family/handicapped" restroom had no bench or seat. It made undressing, showering, and dressing two wiggly grandsons a challenge. Also the design of the picnic tables was odd. The benches were very high and the distance from the table long. Eating for kids without spilling was difficult. Also, there is no playground. Plenty of miles of trails and 3 ponds helped provide an enjoyable experience. Approximately 18 miles to services and stores in Lakeland. We camped at Colt Creek State Park in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

Hiking, biking, star-gazing, wildlife viewing, and fishing led the list of activities. Bike riding with a mountain bike equipped with wider tires for the campground roads and park trails would be necessary. I imagine bug repellent for camping during the wet season would be a must! Also canopies for shade would be helpful.

We stayed in one of the drive thru sites at this new campground! Lots of trails good for hiking or biking. There was a separate equestrian campground. Staff was great, willing to help in any way to make your visit more enjoyable. We parked so we had the curbside of the RV to shade us in the afternoon, as there was little natural shade. I would give it a 10 if it had sewer hookups! We camped at Colt Creek State Park in a Motorhome.

Brand new state park. Big level sites but very limited shade. We camped during March so weather was cool but would expect it to be hot during the summer with so few trees. Roads are all dirt so lots of dust. Sites are gravel. Very clean bath house. Campground is quite a drive from the entrance. Looking forward to this becoming a nice weekend getaway. Stayed in site #30 and it was big enough for our 40ft fifth wheel. We camped at Colt Creek State Park in a Fifth Wheel.
