The sites are very cramped, but the beach made up for that inconvenience. 30 amp kicked off when air conditioner was used. 50 amp had 117 volts on line 1, and 79 volts on line 2 so could not use due to low voltage. Told office of elec problem when checked in on 1 April 2017 on 3 April went back to office and new person called it in on 4 April. Went to office and same rude person that checked me in told me that electrician was just there and said I didn't turn breakers on. I assured him that I had turned breakers on several times and that the current was not sufficient to power anything. He said nothing he could do he had to go with what the electrician told him. This individual was rude and unprofessional to the people that were checking in before us also. I am a work camper and worked in civil service for 40 years and have. Never met a more uncaring person in my life. Long story short we plugged into sites around us that were vacant for the two weeks we were there. We camped at Raccoon Creek Recreation Area (Military FamCamp) in a Fifth Wheel.

Went in on a Sunday so had to go dry for one night. Monday was put in hookup a lot of construction going on so was hard to get around. I guess the only complaint would be to many full timers staying long term which makes it hard for ones that want to stay a couple of weeks and go one. People working here were great . We camped at Raccoon Creek Recreation Area (Military FamCamp) in a Motorhome.

Called in advance, couldn't get answer. Emailed & told to check back. Emailed again & told dry camping only though 5 spaces near us stayed empty our entire 2day stay. Don't put a mat down on their nonexistent grass to cover the decaying dog poo left by others. Staff condescending and don't even begin to believe the posted office times. Horrible directions- sent us to a closed gate and we had to unhook toad to turn around. Poor signage to let you know you are heading to the right place. Great place to stay. Nice facilities and great options for beach, gym, golf and other on base activities. We stayed one night in overflow, dry camping and then got right into a regular site. Upgrades on many of the 30 amp sites are underway. We'd stay there again in our 40' motorhome. We camped at Raccoon Creek Recreation Area (Military FamCamp) in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

15 minutes to get off base but there are plenty of things to do. Great spot to walk. We stayed there and attended the Tampa RV show and it was less than 45 minutes away.

As dilbert says: not too good!! This is my first & hopefully last time at Macdill Famcamp. Macdill Famcamp is a USAF managed Camp for Active Duty & Retirees. If you do not book a site here for at least a few months stay during winter months, the site you get seems to be of lesser quality. This RV Park caters to snowbirds with multiple month stays. If you are not a long-termer, you get a site in the section nicknamed the "Sand Pit". It's sand flea and sand spur city. Nice beach on the bay but water is stagnant when there's no wind and the bottom is very sticky! Beach Club and Beach Club Staff are nice. There is no pool open on base until after Memorial Day. Restrooms had same crap stains, the next day. Famcamp Office Staff is seems to be overworked and underpaid. You can tell by the attitude. The 1 male office staff member is best suited as a cafeteria monitor in an elementary school. He thinks Famcampers are of the same aptitude. He's very condescending. He is clearly a miserable/cocky/impatient person. The clientele here are mostly 70 and older from the North and Mid-West. There is no printed S.O.P. or printed Protocol to let you know how things work. It is a clickish cluster! I talked with folks that have stayed here over the years & nothing has really changed for the better! The Air Force Base is average looking with all base amenities including a veterinarian. Its almost 5 miles from the front gate to the Famcamp. No Food at the Beach Club after 2030. No pizza delivery after 2100. Supposedly, no outside food delivery is authorized. There's the typical run-down city area outside the Main gate. Tampa is not the prettiest. Famcamp sites are $20 bucks/night. I know its cheap, but if you can afford to go west to St Pete or Clearwater Beaches you'll probably have a much better experience. I know I will NOT stay again unless its absolutely necessary. Easter Sunrise Service was very well done! Kudos! Good luck from a Retired Mustang. We camped at Raccoon Creek Recreation Area (Military FamCamp) in a Fifth Wheel.

Tips for other Campers:

PX and Class Six are good. Commissary is great to have. Veterinarians on base were also great. ITT office is understaffed; waited in line for 45 mins for Busch Garden Tickets and left. Time for BRAC to take a look at this base.

Demerits? Seriously? A management style of treating campers like school children assigns 3 points for various infractions. Exceed 12 and you're ejected. Office staff lets those who come to the office wait, while they take phone calls immediately. With only 34 first-come first-serve sites, this park certainly discourages spontaneity. It really just provides subsidized Winter housing and RV storage for snowbirds. Be prepared for days of dry-camping and hearing generators from dawn to almost midnight. It would be considerate to set aside a no-generator area for those of us who can function without one. FHU sites vary from spacious to cramped. Partial sites are next to the dry-camp field and their generators. We watched seven partial sites sit empty for three nights (maybe more after we left), but we couldn't get out of dry-camping. Neither could we make a reservation. If they don't reserve them and they don't move people to them, then what? The location is beautiful, the base has every amenity. We appreciated the library, commissary, and exchange. Gas was convenient. Easy to get to highways and tourist attractions. This is the 23rd FAMCAMP we have stayed in and the first to require vaccination records for my Cat for a 4 day visit! Bathrooms were tidied-up, but have had years of hard use. Every stall had a functional shower-head and shower-curtain and lots of hot water. Huge laundry, as is fitting for 400 campsites. Dump station is located for departing campers, not convenient for those needing to dump before dry-camping. WiFi? Forget it. Never got on it in the campground, indicating it's way overloaded. We camped at Raccoon Creek Recreation Area (Military FamCamp) in a Motorhome.

There are two CGs on this base. One is the annex and the other is the main park. Registration for both is done at the MWR office near the main CG. That is convenient because you can rent recreational equipment. Since policy allows up to a six months stay, and by looking at all of the permanent personal fixtures in and around the RVs, it appears that both CGs are heavily occupied by long term residents. Check-in is only during normal daylight hours. For these two reasons, I would not count on getting a site without an advanced reservation. Access roads are paved. Sites are all back-in with a couple parallel concrete tire strips for the pads. Space between rigs is just adequate. Utilities worked fine. The pay-for-use laundry has lots of machines and the shower/restroom facilities, in that same building, are numerous. There are three Wi-Fi hotspots in the main campground. I found none in the annex. They said that there was 4G cell data coverage, but I did not receive it at the time of my visit. There is a marina at the CG (boat rentals available), a golf course just down the road, and other normal base facilities. There are some date/time security gate restrictions. Check that out before you show up at one only to find it closed. Despite the rating, I probably won’t be back. As an over nighter, I found everything to be less friendly and user convenient than I would have liked. We camped at Raccoon Creek Recreation Area (Military FamCamp) in a Motorhome.

Raccoon Creek (MacDill AFB family campground): advantages include relatively low monthly campsite rate that includes W/E/S, close to the commissary/bx, close to golfing and the beach. Security and once in the camp reservation system you can stay for up to 6 months. These advantages are offset by serious weak points that prevent it from being the top rated military campground that it should be. The first one is a lazy, don’t care office staff with a take it or leave it attitude that campers often talk about. If this was a private campground without the base to lessen some of their operating expenses and their stay 6 months policy, they’d go out of business. They rely on volunteers to do the work that incentivized paid camp workers should be doing. Their office doesn’t open until 10:00AM (every campground that we have worked at opened their office doors NLT 0800). Free WiFi is not available throughout the campground. Their activities are centered around making money for the MWR rather than providing services to the campers (propane at $5.10 per gallon and at the in-town CampingWorld @ $3.25 per gal). Base or camp personnel only come around to spruce up the campground when they hear that the base commander might be coming around to inspect. They actually expect the campers to drive over to the office area to borrow the camp mower and keep the grass around their sites neat and mowed. If a space becomes available due to a departure, it might be 1-2 days before someone in W/E or no services overflow section hears that there is a full hookup space they can move into. Their idea of publicizing a campground event (ie., yard sale, park picnic, crafts show ) is a one time mention in their monthly newspaper. We experienced several power outages this season and more than a few power surges, the kind that fry your TV, microwave etc. If you want internet, you subscribe to Brighthouse (extra monthly charge ) for your internet needs as the Mi-Fi card will work but only intermittently. Their mail distribution system is totally unreliable and if you let them handle your incoming packages, you do so at your peril. They frequently misplace or lose the parcels including letters and medications. We camped at Raccoon Creek Recreation Area (Military FamCamp) in a Motorhome.

We like the FamCamp at MacDill AFB. The price is right and there are a lot of things to do on base. The camp sites are nothing special; they are adequate. The laundry room, showers and post office facility were good. It is a decent place to stay for the Tampa RV show. The campground had free tickets to the show which was nice. The Sunday church service at the FamCamp was great. We will come back. We camped at Raccoon Creek Recreation Area (Military FamCamp) in a Motorhome.

This is our 4th stay here and we always enjoy it. We stay in the annex campground where the sites have a little more room between them. Each site has a concrete pad and full hookups. For the Famcamp and the annex, there are 3 dog parks, access to the beach, and a golf course. The people in the office are friendly and helpful. We will return.
