Very nice county RV park with paved roads and wide, long and level paved back in sites. Many towering trees for good shade canopy and lots of grass. Some sites can get satellite signals. No cable tv, good antenna TV, OK open wi-fi, good cell signal. Pool only open on weekends. OK for big rigs. Sites arranged in circular pods with inner and outer sties. Each pod has RR, shower and laundry facility. Cannot request specific site, if you can't get sat signal they charge $15 to change sites. Park clean and staff helpful. Close to Miami Zoo on south side of town. Will stay there again. We camped at Larry & Penny Thompson Park & Campground in a Fifth Wheel.

Just the best of experiences! Our site was level asphalt with plenty of room between us and our neighbors. Grass and trees made you feel like you were far away form Miami, but in fact you were right in the middle of the city. There were great, I mean really GREAT walking and hiking trails. A big plus was the laundry facilities that were right on site, clean and reasonably priced. We did not use/participate, but there is a pool and planned activities. The park also had obvious summer activities around the small lake, including a water slide and "beach". This campground is a best kept secret as far as I am concerned. We would definitely come back to this park. We camped at Larry & Penny Thompson Park & Campground in a Fifth Wheel.

We paid a weekly rate plus an extra day rate with no discounts. Did not get to use a lot of the facilities because of weather conditions. Creative use of RV sites which worked very well. The campground and park are in 2 different areas which keeps traffic out of the RV sites. Fairly large wooded sites. Heated swimming pool, two large laundry facilities, several garbage collection bins and a friendly staff. We would return to this campground. We camped at Larry & Penny Thompson Park & Campground in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

You can find many grocery stores on SW 184 Street and the entrance to the Turnpike is only a few miles away as is US Hwy 1. Visit Coral Castle, Monkey Jungle and Fruit and Spice Park which are all located in the Homestead area. There are fruit stands galore where you can get fruit milkshakes (try it in fresh strawberry season) and produce stands where you can get veggies and fruits for your dinner. Easy day trip down to the Upper Keys.

This park is laid out differently then all the other parks we have stayed at. They had circular drives that they call pods, and each pod has several sites, inside and on the outside. If you want a better description, I suggest using a satellite view of the park. Anyway, it looks like it might be kind of tight for some of the larger rigs to back into a site. We have a 39 footer, and we were on one of the outside sites, and while it was a little different backing in, it was not impossible. The hookups were on the side and easy to get to. The staff was friendly and helpful. When they saw the size of our rig, they moved us from a site on the inside of the pod, to one on the outside. One of the staff came out made sure we found the site and moved the picnic table, as we were backing in. The wi-fi worked well with our cell phones and tablets, but not so good with the laptops. The sites were close together, with nothing but a pad to park on and a picnic table. Unlike most parks, you have to park your towed vehicle on the grass. The road inside the park is a little wider than a city street, but the roads in the pods and the pads are narrow. We camped at Larry & Penny Thompson Park & Campground in a Motorhome.

For inexpensive lodging near Miami it's hard to beat this place. The sites are large and level with full hook ups. The staff is super efficient. You can have mail delivered here. The WiFi is great in the cabana (across from office) where there are many tables, AC and bathrooms. The pool looks nice but we didn't utilize it. There are several laundry and shower facilities spread throughout the park. Clotheslines are behind the laundry buildings but not allowed on site. They will provide you with a nice map of the nearest grocery stores and Walmart. We camped at Larry & Penny Thompson Park & Campground in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

There are many feral cats in the park next door and some in the campground. You will know it's a "community cat" by the notched left ear. This indicates it has been captured, neutered, given a rabies shot and treated for parasites and released back in their area. We had the pleasure of fostering a little guy I named Will Feral for the month we stayed.

My husband really enjoyed biking in the area along the canals.

Miami-Dade County Park. Very quiet, well kept/neat & pleasant park w/a pleasant staff. Older park so the sites are short and don't have patios (except handicap sites). I had to "overhang" our 39' 5er off the rear of the pad & still had to park the truck sideways in front. Nice pool (11-5 only) w/lifeguard. No cable but free WiFi. Heavy traffic once outside the park. Adjacent to the Miami Zoo. Abundant/variety of shopping is close. Great place to start for day trips to the Keys (45 min. to Key Largo) if you don't want to stay in the expensive resorts on the keys. We stayed a month for $565 including taxes. We camped at Larry & Penny Thompson Park & Campground in a Fifth Wheel.

This was our second time to stay here and we will be returning next year. It is great camping area in a county park next to the zoo. The sites are large in a circle formation, so you get good views of the trees and grass and not your neighbor. There is a nice pool, clean showers and restrooms, and adequate laundry facilities. The free wifi is supplied by the county and they block Netflix, but in general we got good reception. We camped at Larry & Penny Thompson Park & Campground in a Fifth Wheel.

This is one of those hidden gems you hear about on the road. We chose to stay here since we couldn't find a reasonably priced campground in the Keys with availability and are glad we did. The sites are arranged in a cul-de-sac layout with sites in the middle as well. Everything about the park was great. Power, water, wifi and laundry. Its about an hour drive to Key Largo from the campground so day trips were frequent. Its on the south side of Miami so getting to the beach area or downtown made for quite a trip. Lots of traffic around the city, but a little less near the campground. At the time we were there, it was full of mostly snowbird residents and was very quiet with lots of nice people to chat with. Many were amazed we got our reservation on such short notice, only about a week prior. You just can't beat the price for the location and time of year, the rate is based on a weekly rate. If we return to Miami, we will definitely stay at Larry & Penny Thompson Park again! We camped at Larry & Penny Thompson Park & Campground in a Fifth Wheel.

WiFi is provided by the county of Miami-Dade and worked extremely well for me. It worked as reliably as my Verizon MiFi LTE, which was also strong here. I have a regular TV antennae and I could get most channels except for NBC for some reason. The bathhouses were clean, but 2 out of 4 of the women's shower stalls were out of order the whole time I was there. The water pressure was pretty dismal, actually worse than my RV. It was also cold, but when I informed the office about the temperature, it was fixed immediately. We camped at Larry & Penny Thompson Park & Campground in a Fifth Wheel.

Tips for other Campers:

Burr's Berry Farm, just 5 minutes down the road. You pick your own strawberries and enjoy their concession stand including items like strawberry shortcake, soft serve ice cream, strawberry milkshake, nachos, hot dogs, etc.

This is overpriced for a county park or any other campground for what they do and do not provide. There is no WiFi, no cable, antenna will only get you Spanish channels, the sewer system needs work as it drains very slow, and our site was not very level. Being close to the highway, it was quiet and the connected park is very pretty. There is no RV class A or 5th wheel friendly fuel nearby and getting out of the park can be hard due to heavy traffic. We camped at Larry & Penny Thompson Park & Campground in a Motorhome.

Well maintained, quiet, county-run park with paved roads, level, widely spaced sites. Park-like setting with acres of dog walking areas behind sites. Adjacent park has walking/biking trails. Large pool could use better daily maintenance, but adequate to use. Pool hours only 11 to 5, so not convenient. Good Wi-Fi, but we were next to repeater pole. Good antenna TV. Will stay again on our return from the Keys. We camped at Larry & Penny Thompson Park & Campground in a Fifth Wheel.

Decent but dated municipal park in SW Miami. Very convenient to sights like the Everglades. Campground has W/S/ and 50 Amp Electric but no cable and Wi-Fi is iffy. Staff is very friendly. Pretty park with all the trees. Some sites can be tough for longer rigs. Laundry rooms need dollar changers for convenience. Some pods have good picnic tables but not all. We would stay her again if we could not get into John Pennekamp State Park in Largo. We camped at Larry & Penny Thompson Park & Campground in a Motorhome.

The unique design of this county park - sites are arranged like spokes on a wheel - makes it intriguing and delightful. Adjacent to several peach orchards, lots of trees and grass, gives it a rural park setting in an urban area. Friendly staff, pleasant setting, and convenient location to tour the area make it easy to recommend. However, it lacks Wi-Fi - except in the clubhouse, and no cable TV. Still, would stay here again. We camped here in late May for 4 nights in our 30' travel trailer. It is a beautiful park set in a mango grove (lots of ripe mangoes). Since we were there out of season, half of the park was closed down. The pool was only open on Sat. and Sun. It was peaceful and quiet with lots of space and privacy between sites. The bathrooms were clean, and the park was well taken care of. From this location, it is an easy 30 minute ride to downtown Miami, South Beach, Key Biscayne, and Miami Beach. The park has a freshwater lake, water slide, and beach. We really enjoyed our stay and would come back again. We camped at Larry & Penny Thompson Park & Campground in a Travel Trailer.
