Overall Rating:

Spent the week of April 2nd at Big Lagoon State Park located just west of Pensacola Florida. The good was the park itself, for the most part was very nice. Clean showers and restrooms, generally quite, but the big issue for us, is the lack of large level sites for class A motorhomes. Luckily, I did my research, so we had one of only three spaces that would actually fit a 40 foot motorhome. There are a lot of tent campers, which is OK, but we found them to be generally noisier than the other campers. Lots of dogs, some well behaved, others not so well behaved. Would go back, but will be selective about site choice. If it rains, the water puddles in the sites, but does soak in pretty fast. Lots of campfire smoke, so be prepared. I guess the tent campers think that the smoke will keep the bugs away. We camped at Big Lagoon State Park in a Motorhome.

Trigger's seafood just outside the park is pretty good. There is a Winn Dixie just down the road.

Overall Rating:

The park was full because it was a weekend, so we got one of the last 2 sites for a 30-ft RV. The site was difficult to get into due to the truck across the one-way road sticking out too far. But we had a wide, concrete-paved, W/E site right next to the modern, clean restroom-shower building and it was screened by bushes on one side and by the boardwalk to the restroom on the other. There was obviously a lot of pedestrian traffic on the boardwalk, but we still were able to open our rear picture-window shades in our relatively private space. Big Lagoon SP is a great location for visiting the spectacular National Naval Aviation Museum, Ft. Barrancas, and the historic lighthouse, all at Pensacola Naval Air Station. We also enjoyed visiting the wildlife viewing areas within the state park. And the park was very convenient to US 98 without having to go back through Pensacola when we headed west toward Mobile. The price includes the reservation fee averaged over the price of a 2-night stay. We camped at Big Lagoon State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

The park is very nice but little to no money has been invested in the campground section. Most sites are dirt/gravel/sand, many are not level, and several sites flood when it rains more than an inch (common for FL). There are some good sites available with concrete pads and patio space, and the sites were not too close together. We camped at Big Lagoon State Park in a Motorhome.

Overall Rating:

We stayed here for two nights. I was expecting to see surf but the park is literally in a big lagoon behind a key so no surf. It's a short drive to the gulf shores national preserves over a big bridge you can see from the campground. The beaches are kind of pathetic for the area, being just thin strips of sand on marshland. There were alligator signs everywhere so I don't think I would have done much swimming anyway. Even so we had a really nice stay in this park. The trails are a rare treat, over dunes, and there were little informational signs everywhere so we learned the names of trees and plants. I find staff at state parks are usually stuffy and bureaucratic but everyone here was exceptional nice and friendly. Our site was a spacious back in. Everything was clean and well maintained. This would be a really great place to stay with anyone who loves military jets because we were treated to an almost constant airshow all day long including several flybys with the pilots doing really close flying formations and stunts. We also saw big military helicopters. Not so great if you aren't into the sound of freedom though. Traffic from the nearby bridge to Gulf Island beaches was a bit much even at night. We would stay again. We camped at Big Lagoon State Park in a Travel Trailer.

Location near the Outstanding Aviation Museum makes this park a winner. It can be a bit buggy, like any park near water, and next time I would try to reserve a site with a pad rather than track sand into the RV. Rate was the total Florida senior resident half price plus other fees. We camped at Big Lagoon State Park in a Motorhome.

The park is on a quiet barrier island but very close to Pensacola NAS and the Air Museum. There are a lot of trails for walking and biking out to the Intracoastal waterway and the Gulf beaches. I would have graded it higher but during the whole time we stayed there the bathroom had no soap in the dispenser and no paper towels. We camped at Big Lagoon State Park in a Motorhome.

Do not miss the Naval Air Museum. It's huge, packed with exhibits and planes, and free. If the Blue Angels are practicing (usually Tuesday and Wednesday) you can watch them from the Museum grounds free.

This is a beautiful campground with access to the beaches, boat ramp, lagoons, and hiking trails. We love many aspects of this campground. The real negative is how noisy it can be. With weekend partying groups of dozens of drinkers, and/or incessant barking of dogs, it can be difficult to feel relaxed. Since two of the three campground hosts had the barking dogs, complaining to them had no effect. Calls to the campground number didn't get returned until the next day. We camped at Big Lagoon State Park in a Motorhome.

$24 a night when all the various taxes and fees are added. Good 30 amp service with water at sites. Some are paved, some are packed sand. Some are open, some are shaded. Interior roads are easily accessible and paved. Verizon worked well here. All back in sites. This is a very nice, quiet campground close enough to the beach and attractions the area has to offer but far enough away to be peaceful and dark at night. Yes, NAS Pensacola is close by and the planes to tend to fly over but I find it patriotic rather than noisy! We camped at Big Lagoon State Park in a Motorhome.

The Naval Aviation Museum on NAS Pensacola is worth a visit - its free. The Blue Angels are based here and practice on Tuesday's & Wednesday's from March-November, they are open to the public. We enjoy the all you can eat shrimp on Wed & Sun at the Shrimp Shack in Pedido Key.

Tips for other Campers:

The only tip I can offer is enjoy your stay but if you are going to stay longer than you initially anticipate and you book on the website; for each transaction they add $6.70. We originally booked 3 nights and the transaction fee was added. We decided to stay additional nights and each time we had to pay the extra transaction fee.

Overall Rating:

I'm surprised at the overall average rating given for this park. I rate it higher than that. Sites are flat, most are just a little out of level, but not enough to really cause a problem with leveling. Most sites are hard packed sand/shells/rocks, but there are a few soft sand areas in some sites. No sewer at the sites, but a good dump station. Power and water are good. The bath houses are new and exceptionally clean, and the showers have good hot water and a "real" mix valve - no push buttons. The sites are generally fairly well separated, but small trees and scrub brush between the sites provide for good privacy. Lots of board walks and trails. Canoe and kayak rentals are available for paddling around in the salt marsh or along beach. Swimming areas are separated from the campground. There is constant sound during the daylight hours from training flights from the naval air station nearby, but not loud enough to be objectionable. Good TV reception, no heavy tree canopy so satellite reception is easy, Verizon cell coverage is 5/5. All kinds of shopping and supplies are close by. We camped here many years ago, before hurricane Ivan severely damaged this park. It has rebounded very well. It won't be that long again before we return. We camped at Big Lagoon State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Tips for other Campers:

Excellent seafood in an unpretentious "locals" place at Trigger's restaurant. Turn left out of the CG gate, go about 1/2 mile, Trigger's is on the right. They have an "early bird" menu with discounted prices from 4PM-7PM. The seafood au-gratin is excellent.

This is a state park so you have a lot of services that are available in RV Resorts. The site was level, we didn't even put our levelers down. We stayed two nights, came in late, visited the Naval Air Museum and left early the next morning so didn't do a lot of exploring in the park. On top of that it was rainy both days. We would stay here again. We camped at Big Lagoon State Park in a Motorhome.

Good water and 50 amp electric and acceptable TV channels however no WiFi and no sewer, just dump station. We stayed for 3 days to visit the Naval Aviation Museum and Perdido Key and both were very close by. Gave it a Good rating because it was inexpensive and close to what we wanted to do however, bathrooms were not easily handicap accessible, nor were they very clean. We did notice a few portapottys on the roadside in the campgrounds, but none were large enough to accommodate a wheelchair.

The main road on the way into the park was riddled with a minefield of unavoidable pot holes and huge puddles hiding some of them. At the very least we thought they could have filled the holes with gravel to make the path a bit more accessible for big rigs. We would stay there again because it was very affordable and we do not need or use their bathroom facilities. We camped at Big Lagoon State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

We enjoyed the Aviation Museum so much, we returned for a second day. And if timing allows, don't miss the Tuesday and Wednesday Blue Angel practice sessions.

Also, try the "Shrimp Basket" for lunch or dinner. They have all-you-can-eat specials most days of the week and we took advantage of their all-you-can-eat steamed shrimp for a late lunch and certainly got our money's worth.
