Overall Rating:

This popular campground was full over the long Martin Luther King, Jr., weekend, and there was a 25 minute line to get into the park through the single entrance gate. There are 5 camping loops, and most (possibly all) have water and electric service. Sites are fairly close together, with sites on the outside of the loop a little more spacious. Location of campground is outstanding for nature or history lovers. The trails and beaches and the fort give a variety of things to do without leaving the park. There were plenty of over-the-air TV stations and our Verizon network worked well. The fee shown reflects a 50% senior pass discount. A dump station is provided in Loop A and likely other loops. We enjoy this park and will stay again when traveling in the area. We camped at Fort Pickens Campground in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

The Florida National Scenic Trail passes by or through all campground loops and goes out to Fort Pickens and to southern Florida in the other direction. Bike friendly. Fort Pickens is interesting for history buffs, and the beaches and woods are excellent. Take whatever food and libations you like as there little in Pensacola Beach.

Great Park, sand lots, miles of pristine beach and ocean. Sites can be hard to negotiate so make sure you review the park map before choosing a site. Hint: the corners of the loops are easier to get into with a motorhome. We camped at Fort Pickens Campground in a Motorhome.

It is eight miles into the island stores and 12 miles with a one dollar toll into Pensacola for decent grocery shopping. Hint: buy booze before arriving as it is very expensive there.

Overall Rating:

This is the closest campground to our house in Pensacola, so we visit perhaps once or twice a year. First thing for visitors to understand is that this campground is operated by Gulf Islands National Seashore, and it is located west of Pensacola Beach. It is NOT in Pensacola. There is a $1.00 toll to go to the beach (SunPass accepted), and a $15 per vehicle entrance fee to enter the Fort Pickens part of the National Seashore (good for seven days). Interagency passes will get you through for free if you have one. Of course, campground fees are 50% discount with these cards. The CG is on the bay side, so the beaches are Gulf side, a relatively short boardwalk away. Hurricanes from years gone by decimated the trees and native vegetation that once visually separated campsites. For the most part, there is little privacy, but there is space between sites.. The asphalt pads often have a good 6 inch drop to the shell/sand area where your awning will stretch, a good ankle twister and tripping point. Bath houses are brand new as of 2016. A-Loop is isolated. B-E Loops are intertwined. OTA DTV has 27 strong channels, all networks available. Beach is second to none, white, sugar texture sand. Bicycle and hiking trails take you to the fort, or you can drive. There are water moccasins in the marshes, so stay alert. Dumbest thing about this campground is the 12 Noon check-out and 1 PM check-in times. You cannot have lunch on your last day because you are busy packing up. Campers should be prepared for cold, hot, wind, thunderstorms, lightning, salt spray, dead still conditions, mosquitoes, etc. Nearest major grocery store is in Gulf Breeze about ten miles away, so come prepared. The campground is not that special, but the location is simply heaven for the person who loves to beach, surf fish, bicycle, and explore military forts. We camped at Fort Pickens Campground in a Travel Trailer.

Tips for other Campers:

Beachgoers should fully understand rip currents. Serious sunburn possible in white sand. Most people who drown are from inland states. If you cannot swim, just wade. Many good restaurants, bars, recreation areas at nearby Pensacola Beach. Sales taxes are higher on the Beach than in Gulf Breeze or Pensacola. Downtown Pensacola (Palafox Place) is tops with regards to fine dining, sidewalk cafes, nightlife, festivals, year round sports.

I rated this a 9 because on one side of the campground you have the Pensacola Bay and across the street you have the pristine beach and ocean which is relatively free of people. Bring your bikes, kayaks and fishing gear. We preferred loop E as had more open space than loop A. We camped at Fort Pickens Campground in a Motorhome.

Nice campground with great access to beaches, nature trails, and of course Fort Pickens. Biking and hiking opportunities are abundant. The beaches are fantastic. There are numerous birds to see; such as, pelicans, egrets, herons, gulls, etc.

Be careful when selecting your site, because some sites are tight to get into from the access roads within the campground. We camped at Fort Pickens Campground in a Travel Trailer.

Tips for other Campers:

Located at the entrance to Pensacola's harbor, you will see many boats of all shapes and sizes. Across from the fort, you have a great view of the Pensacola Lighthouse.

If you are into military aircraft, this is the place to be. Across the harbor is Pensacola Naval Air Station, which provides an excellent vantage point to watch the Blue Angels (this is their home base) on the days they're flying. Also, you will see Navy trainers and other military aircraft flying.

The location is absolutely beautiful. Even though it was very crowded, it wasn't overly loud. Nice bike ride to Fort Pickens but quite a distance (about 5 miles) to Pensacola Beach and about 40 minutes (by car) to the mainland. We camped at Fort Pickens Campground in a Motorhome.

Excellent campground! You can walk to the beautiful beach plus many hiking trails. The actual Fort Pickens is about 2 miles from the campground, but highly recommend you check it out. Very cool!! Only negative was the National Parks fee is not included in the camping fee. $15 extra if you don't have a National Park pass. We camped at Fort Pickens Campground in a Motorhome.

Had a great stay here. Nice park and easy access to the gulf beach. Site had some trees, but they were too small to provide shade. Make sure you make reservations, as it fills up quick and the standby line does not give many people the ending they wanted. We would definitely stay here again. We got to watch the Blue Angels practice right from our beach chairs on the Gulf Beach. It was one of the coolest experiences we have had. Pegleg Pete's on the road in was a great place to eat. Their crab claws were excellent.

As others have said the locale is unbeatable, especially in the Fall and early Spring, when the temps are nice. Primitive beaches on both the Gulf and Bay sides of the island. Ospreys in the tree tops. Great Blue Herons and Brown Pelicans fishing on the bay side. It's easy to be kicked off by weather is the one down side. We've been evacuated twice - once in Fall and once in Spring. Still one of my favorite places. We camped at Fort Pickens Campground in a Fifth Wheel.

Good Verizon, and good over the air TV. Restrooms and showers were spotless. Plenty of room between sites and campground kept clean.
Road in can flood during heavy rain and is about 20 minute drive back into town for groceries so best to stock up before you go to campground although there is a small store near campground it is a bit pricey. We camped at Fort Pickens Campground in a Motorhome.

The setting for this campground is fantastic. You are a 5-10 minute walk to the beach and there are miles of white sand everywhere. The restrooms are clean and nice. The sites are nice but many of them are close together and none of them have much, if any privacy. We were in a 33 ft camper and had to be very careful about the site we choose. If you have a senior pass, this is by far the most economical and pretty campsite you will get by the ocean. There is one drawback. They will evacuate the campground if it is windy or rainy enough to cause the ocean to come over the road. This happened while we here, and it had happened a few weeks before we got here. There were no other options open in the area so we only had about 40% of our time we could be here. Be prepared for a back up option if you go, because this happens somewhat routinely. Lot spacing was nearby with some shade. Site surface was sand and featured a fire ring and picnic table. We camped at Fort Pickens Campground in a Fifth Wheel.

Tips for other Campers:

The very best key lime pie can be had at Flounders Chowder House. The price is $8 for what ends up being the equivalent of 3 pieces. We went back and carried out three different time. It was heavenly. Put a piece in the freezer and it is even better.

It was so nice to walk across the street every day to enjoy the beautiful white sandy beach and gorgeous sunsets. The bike ride to visit the fort was really nice, and visiting the fort was educational for my kids. We love to earn junior ranger badges at every national park, monument and seashore that we visit. It was really neat to stay right at a historic site and be able to ride our bikes there to do the activities for the junior rangers.

We have a 41 foot 5th wheel and our rig fit in site A4, but there was barely enough room for the truck. We made it work though by parking the truck under the hitch. Otherwise you have to park in overflow parking. The site was really nice though with a semi-private yard.

Verizon and AT&T worked well here. We camped at Fort Pickens Campground in a Fifth Wheel.

This campground, part of the Fort Pickens area in the Gulf Islands National Seashore, is large with 5 loops. Our site in Loop A was paved and level, and partially shaded. The barrier island that is the national seashore in this area is very narrow and low, so it's common to see water in the road and parking lots from rain, plus white sand blowing across the road. We stopped here to visit the National Naval Aviation Museum at Pensacola NAS. There is no wi-fi but our Verizon card worked well and there were plenty of over-the-air TV stations. Sites had electric and water. The campground is reached by crossing two bridges from the mainland through Gulf Breeze and then to Pensacola Beach. This is the second time we've come here and would likely return in the future. We camped at Fort Pickens Campground in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

The Naval Aviation Museum on Pensacola NAS is simply outstanding, and is a must-see. The 150+ aircraft on display are all in museum-quality condition. Allow a full day to visit this museum; admission is free.

The National Cemetery on Pensacola NAS is also worth a visit to reflect on the many service people who have served our country.

Fort Pickens has an interesting history over the centuries and is definitely worth a visit.

Others have talked about the facilities, which are fine. What I will always love about this campsite is access to pristine beaches on both the Gulf side and the Santa Rosa Sound side. 10 minute walk to gulf and 5 minute walk to sound from our site. Wonderful birds - more ospreys and great blue herons than anywhere else I've ever been. Lots of shore birds, brown pelicans, and others in heron family. You can stay 14 days and then must be out for 2, I think. We stayed here 3 2 week times in fall of 2o15, alternating with Big Lagoon State Park. Amazing deal for seniors with the pass.
