Beautiful campground!! Can't believe they had availability. The beaches, the views... breathtaking. Love the whole campground. You are in nature. There is a dump station right in the park so very convenient to dump before you leave, but not a hookup at your site. We camped at Fort Pickens Campground in a Fifth Wheel.

There is an offleash dog beach just outside of the park which was great since you couldn't take your dog on any of the beaches in the park. Loved the Fort... amazing

Nice park, reasonably large sites, bathhouses were modern and immaculate. Electric and water are a treat in a national park. Loved the sites to see inside the park. We had a couple of issues which keep this from being s 10. First, distance to other area attractions off the peninsula is longer than we'd like. More importantly, the site lengths are challenging. We saw only a couple sites that could accommodate a 40' RV. Tree heights are not trimmed well for taller rigs. We managed to avoid tree damage because we have a lot of experience towing, but we saw several RVs with damage from the overhead trees. Loops B through E are better in this regard, but the sites are shorter and harder to back into. We camped at Fort Pickens Campground in a Fifth Wheel.

As others have said the locale is unbeatable, especially in the Fall and early Spring, when the temps are nice. Primitive beaches on both the Gulf and Bay sides of the island. Ospreys in the tree tops. Great Blue Herons and Brown Pelicans fishing on the bay side. It's easy to be kicked off by weather is the one down side. We've been evacuated twice - once in Fall and once in Spring. Still one of my favorite places. We camped at Fort Pickens Campground in a Fifth Wheel.

It was so nice to walk across the street every day to enjoy the beautiful white sandy beach and gorgeous sunsets. The bike ride to visit the fort was really nice, and visiting the fort was educational for my kids. We love to earn junior ranger badges at every national park, monument and seashore that we visit. It was really neat to stay right at a historic site and be able to ride our bikes there to do the activities for the junior rangers.

We have a 41 foot 5th wheel and our rig fit in site A4, but there was barely enough room for the truck. We made it work though by parking the truck under the hitch. Otherwise you have to park in overflow parking. The site was really nice though with a semi-private yard.

Verizon and AT&T worked well here. We camped at Fort Pickens Campground in a Fifth Wheel.

Overall Rating:

The setting for this campground is fantastic. You are a 5-10 minute walk to the beach and there are miles of white sand everywhere. The restrooms are clean and nice. The sites are nice but many of them are close together and none of them have much, if any privacy. We were in a 33 ft camper and had to be very careful about the site we choose. If you have a senior pass, this is by far the most economical and pretty campsite you will get by the ocean. There is one drawback. They will evacuate the campground if it is windy or rainy enough to cause the ocean to come over the road. This happened while we here, and it had happened a few weeks before we got here. There were no other options open in the area so we only had about 40% of our time we could be here. Be prepared for a back up option if you go, because this happens somewhat routinely. Lot spacing was nearby with some shade. Site surface was sand and featured a fire ring and picnic table. We camped at Fort Pickens Campground in a Fifth Wheel.

Tips for other Campers:

The very best key lime pie can be had at Flounders Chowder House. The price is $8 for what ends up being the equivalent of 3 pieces. We went back and carried out three different time. It was heavenly. Put a piece in the freezer and it is even better.

Others have talked about the facilities, which are fine. What I will always love about this campsite is access to pristine beaches on both the Gulf side and the Santa Rosa Sound side. 10 minute walk to gulf and 5 minute walk to sound from our site. Wonderful birds - more ospreys and great blue herons than anywhere else I've ever been. Lots of shore birds, brown pelicans, and others in heron family. You can stay 14 days and then must be out for 2, I think. We stayed here 3 2 week times in fall of 2o15, alternating with Big Lagoon State Park. Amazing deal for seniors with the pass. We camped at Fort Pickens Campground in a Fifth Wheel.

Absolutely beautiful area with lots to do in park. Beaches are lovely and some are quite secluded. Lots of birds and wildlife. Blue Angels practice over Fort. Wonderful! This is not a resort so don't expect perfect. Its old with narrow roads, older bathhouses and sand every where. The staff was friendly and the facilities were pretty clean considering usage. Its a great value. We had to park our truck in overflow due to shorter site. Thats okay. We'll be back! We camped at Fort Pickens Campground in a Fifth Wheel.

Bring a tote for grey water and avoid shower house if possible. They're pretty clean but crowded. Look for the beach parking by Fort batteries. Beaches there are almost empty.

I Love it here. I wish they had black water and sewer hook ups, but other than that it is perfect!!! Right next to the beach, wonderful long hiking trail, fishing, snorkeling, scuba diving, kayaking. you name it. I just 100% loved my stay here. We camped at Fort Pickens Campground in a Fifth Wheel.

Staff, including Hosts, were friendly. Sites were kept clean, but the Loop C rest room/shower is old (dare I say dilapidated), but kept reasonably clean. The Loop D restroom/shower is new, but the shower was closed during our stay. Site access is good, with paving for the RVs, but no pavement for patio (the reverse of what you might expect). Shade is sparse, but typical of the barrier island location. A long, decked walkway goes from the access road through the dunes to the Gulf beach. For actually spending time on the beach, a swimming area with a pavilion having toilets & showers is located a short drive back towards the entrance gate. In summer, a lifeguard station is also there. We toured the fort, and on the mainland, the Naval Aviation Museum is not to be missed! We camped at Fort Pickens Campground in a Fifth Wheel.

I love this campground. Once you enter the park you are in a different world. the campground is nice with big sites but small and tight pads. Once you are in your site it is great but the roads are narrow and it makes backing in very difficult without going off on the grass and that might be OK but it had rained and we made very big ruts. We have a 33 ft fifth wheel and got a site that was for 40 feet . But the way the trees and the road was set up it took my husband about 20 minutes to finally get the camper in the way we wanted it to. We barely were able to fit our truck in without it being on grass which is not allowed. There are sites where this would not be as much of a problem but it is hard to see which ones are OK and which ones would be an issue. In general if there are trees around your site, it will be difficult with anything over 30 feet. The bathrooms were great except on Saturday when there were many kids at the camp. The reason I rate this camp so high is that it has a vast area to walk and ride a bike that is flat and beautiful. It is very easy to drive to the beach and set up for the day. They do not allow pets on the beach but they do on the nature trails. The sunsets were beautiful. Lots of birds and armadillos. We were out in nature and quiet, but only 10-15 minutes away from a number of restaurants and shopping areas. It was great. We will be back again for even longer. We camped at Fort Pickens Campground in a Fifth Wheel.

This is a great campground if you like a remote location. Loop A is the best for us. Its smaller and quieter. There are sites for big rigs but not all of them. Some sites have tree limbs which are a little low so care must be taken. There are good biking and walking trails. Beach is a short walk. We camped at Fort Pickens Campground in a Fifth Wheel.

Overall a good campground; some of the sites are not very long so when you book a site pick a site that is long enough. Access roads are narrow. Sites can be hard to get into and some sites the tow vehicle or auto barely fit. They do have several areas for overflow parking. Nice beaches and interesting historic forts and gun batteries. It was very wet when we were there; some sites were poorly drained. We were not sorry we went, but probably will not return. It would be a great place to camp in the summer to access the beach. We camped at Fort Pickens Campground in a Fifth Wheel.

Very nice facility on the gulf. We stayed two weeks, and would stay again. Price reflects the Senior Pass discount. Two factors make this a "7", instead of higher. First, there are no sewer hookups. Secondly, if you have a very large coach or fiver, try to get something in Loop "A". We stayed in loop "C" with a 36' fiver. Got away with it OK because we managed to reserve one of the longer sites. Roads are very narrow, so back-ins can be challenging. Verizon signal was good. We camped at Fort Pickens Campground in a Fifth Wheel.

Walking distance to the beach makes staying here great. We stayed in loop A site 35, it was about 4 inches off level on passenger side. There is more space between campsites in loop A. Hosts were friendly and easy going. The bathhouses need updating. You have to pay $8.00 fee at main entrance to national park to get to campground unless you have Golden Access or similar then it doesn't cost anything. We will return next vacation.
