My needs are simple: power, shower and running water and this site delivers. I stayed three nights. Some people might not like the slow 25 mph drive for miles along this barrier island to get to the campgrounds but for me it was part of the charm - by the time you arrive you feel like you're farther from civilization than you really are. About half the sites are shaded and I was in the other half, but with a steady breeze and temperatures in the 70's and low 80's the climate was ideal. I'll be back. We camped at Fort Pickens Campground in a Motorhome.

We enjoyed 5 nights here in loop E in a back in site. Parked our truck in overflow parking since space at most sites is limited. Really liked the campground and facilities were clean. Interior roads were tight with people and/or trees in the way trying to park and navigate. The campgrounds 50 amp at our site didn't work when we arrived and with it being a holiday weekend it took a few days to get working (we used 30 amp). We are planning to return shortly. Verizon service worked well and we got several OTA tv channels. $20 fee to get in the National Seashore unless you have the Federal pass. We camped at Fort Pickens Campground in a Travel Trailer.

This did not look like our kind of place, it looked crowded and it was. But it was fun people watching, the beach is close by, and the Blue Angels practiced right overhead. Our site was very level but a bit difficult to get into because it was very crowded right at that point. Crowded because the people across from us sprawled their stuff out onto the road. If your rig is ginormous, that doesn't entitle you to exceed your campsite space! The only drawback was that the campground store and laundry were closed. We camped at Fort Pickens Campground in a Travel Trailer.

Date of Stay: December, 2016 - $13.00
Overall Rating:

This is the closest campground to our house in Pensacola, so we visit perhaps once or twice a year. First thing for visitors to understand is that this campground is operated by Gulf Islands National Seashore, and it is located west of Pensacola Beach. It is NOT in Pensacola. There is a $1.00 toll to go to the beach (SunPass accepted), and a $15 per vehicle entrance fee to enter the Fort Pickens part of the National Seashore (good for seven days). Interagency passes will get you through for free if you have one. Of course, campground fees are 50% discount with these cards. The CG is on the bay side, so the beaches are Gulf side, a relatively short boardwalk away. Hurricanes from years gone by decimated the trees and native vegetation that once visually separated campsites. For the most part, there is little privacy, but there is space between sites.. The asphalt pads often have a good 6 inch drop to the shell/sand area where your awning will stretch, a good ankle twister and tripping point. Bath houses are brand new as of 2016. A-Loop is isolated. B-E Loops are intertwined. OTA DTV has 27 strong channels, all networks available. Beach is second to none, white, sugar texture sand. Bicycle and hiking trails take you to the fort, or you can drive. There are water moccasins in the marshes, so stay alert. Dumbest thing about this campground is the 12 Noon check-out and 1 PM check-in times. You cannot have lunch on your last day because you are busy packing up. Campers should be prepared for cold, hot, wind, thunderstorms, lightning, salt spray, dead still conditions, mosquitoes, etc. Nearest major grocery store is in Gulf Breeze about ten miles away, so come prepared. The campground is not that special, but the location is simply heaven for the person who loves to beach, surf fish, bicycle, and explore military forts. We camped at Fort Pickens Campground in a Travel Trailer.

Tips for other Campers:

Beachgoers should fully understand rip currents. Serious sunburn possible in white sand. Most people who drown are from inland states. If you cannot swim, just wade. Many good restaurants, bars, recreation areas at nearby Pensacola Beach. Sales taxes are higher on the Beach than in Gulf Breeze or Pensacola. Downtown Pensacola (Palafox Place) is tops with regards to fine dining, sidewalk cafes, nightlife, festivals, year round sports.

Had a great stay here. Nice park and easy access to the gulf beach. Site had some trees, but they were too small to provide shade. Make sure you make reservations, as it fills up quick and the standby line does not give many people the ending they wanted. We would definitely stay here again. Tips for other Campers:

We got to watch the Blue Angels practice right from our beach chairs on the Gulf Beach. It was one of the coolest experiences we have had. Pegleg Pete's on the road in was a great place to eat. Their crab claws were excellent.

As others have said the locale is unbeatable, especially in the Fall and early Spring, when the temps are nice. Primitive beaches on both the Gulf and Bay sides of the island. Ospreys in the tree tops. Great Blue Herons and Brown Pelicans fishing on the bay side. It's easy to be kicked off by weather is the one down side. We've been evacuated twice - once in Fall and once in Spring. Still one of my favorite places. We camped at Fort Pickens Campground in a Fifth Wheel.

It was so nice to walk across the street every day to enjoy the beautiful white sandy beach and gorgeous sunsets. The bike ride to visit the fort was really nice, and visiting the fort was educational for my kids. We love to earn junior ranger badges at every national park, monument and seashore that we visit. It was really neat to stay right at a historic site and be able to ride our bikes there to do the activities for the junior rangers.

We have a 41 foot 5th wheel and our rig fit in site A4, but there was barely enough room for the truck. We made it work though by parking the truck under the hitch. Otherwise you have to park in overflow parking. The site was really nice though with a semi-private yard.

Verizon and AT&T worked well here. We camped at Fort Pickens Campground in a Fifth Wheel.

The setting for this campground is fantastic. You are a 5-10 minute walk to the beach and there are miles of white sand everywhere. The restrooms are clean and nice. The sites are nice but many of them are close together and none of them have much, if any privacy. We were in a 33 ft camper and had to be very careful about the site we choose. If you have a senior pass, this is by far the most economical and pretty campsite you will get by the ocean. There is one drawback. They will evacuate the campground if it is windy or rainy enough to cause the ocean to come over the road. This happened while we here, and it had happened a few weeks before we got here. There were no other options open in the area so we only had about 40% of our time we could be here. Be prepared for a back up option if you go, because this happens somewhat routinely. Lot spacing was nearby with some shade. Site surface was sand and featured a fire ring and picnic table. We camped at Fort Pickens Campground in a Fifth Wheel.

Tips for other Campers:

The very best key lime pie can be had at Flounders Chowder House. The price is $8 for what ends up being the equivalent of 3 pieces. We went back and carried out three different time. It was heavenly. Put a piece in the freezer and it is even better.

New restrooms and showers were due to open the week after we visited. Great biking/walking trails. Some campsites have issues with overhanging branches, and backing into the site was pretty tight. Beach is a short walk from group A campsite group, and it's wonderful. Plenty to do around Pensacola (Naval Air Museum, Blue Angels practice, Joe Patti Seafood, McGuires Pub). We'll be back next year. We were in the A loop were many sites are not level. Our rear tires needed six blocks under them and we needed to stay forward in the site to avoid the worst part of the slope. The site, 37, was right where the dump station exits. Also, in order to dump we needed to loop back around, that turn is very tight. But we had good beach access, Verizon cell and broadband both excellent and good TV via batwing. We camped at Fort Pickens Campground in a Motorhome.

Absolutely beautiful area with lots to do in park. Beaches are lovely and some are quite secluded. Lots of birds and wildlife. Blue Angels practice over Fort. Wonderful! This is not a resort so don't expect perfect. Its old with narrow roads, older bathhouses and sand every where. The staff was friendly and the facilities were pretty clean considering usage. Its a great value. We had to park our truck in overflow due to shorter site. Thats okay. We'll be back! We camped at Fort Pickens Campground in a Fifth Wheel.

Bring a tote for grey water and avoid shower house if possible. They're pretty clean but crowded. Look for the beach parking by Fort batteries. Beaches there are almost empty.

We stayed in the A loop, but did not tour the other loops. You must park all vehicles on the pavement, so pay attention if you are making a reservation as longer units might not fit. The paved sites are single wide. There was overflow parking at restrooms, but it was full all the time. At our site, #10, the power tower has the 50 amp plug installed upside down, so we could not use our voltage regulator. Brand new restrooms are being worked on, but were not available during our visit. The bathroom sidewalk was blocked & you had to walk in the sand to get to the very dated bathrooms. The long road in can flood (salt water) during severe storms and access to the park will be denied. If a strong storm comes, you make be asked to evacuate immediately. You can walk across the road to the beach and gulf. The white sand and dunes are very beautiful. There is some space between sites, but no vegetation. A few sites have some shade, including site #10. We only stayed one night and did not get to the fort, but were told it is interesting with a nice museum. We camped at Fort Pickens Campground in a Travel Trailer.

Staff, including Hosts, were friendly. Sites were kept clean, but the Loop C rest room/shower is old (dare I say dilapidated), but kept reasonably clean. The Loop D restroom/shower is new, but the shower was closed during our stay. Site access is good, with paving for the RVs, but no pavement for patio (the reverse of what you might expect). Shade is sparse, but typical of the barrier island location. A long, decked walkway goes from the access road through the dunes to the Gulf beach. For actually spending time on the beach, a swimming area with a pavilion having toilets & showers is located a short drive back towards the entrance gate. In summer, a lifeguard station is also there. We toured the fort, and on the mainland, the Naval Aviation Museum is not to be missed! We camped at Fort Pickens Campground in a Fifth Wheel.
