This is a gem of a park. It is so far out on a peninsula that it has applied to be designated a "dark sky" site. On a clear night, you can see the milky way! A ranger came by one night, with advance notice, and set up a telescope so we could watch a "blue moon" rise. He stayed to point out constellations to anyone who was interested enough to stay and listen. We camped at Dr. Julian G. Bruce St. George Island State Park in a Motorhome.

Park was very clean but does not have sewage hookups. They do have a dump site. The restrooms and showers were nice but since it was very cold and they are not heated we did not use them. We camped at Dr. Julian G. Bruce St. George Island State Park in a Travel Trailer.

Tips for other Campers:

Park is 4 miles in from the park gate and the gate is 4 miles from the island entrance/bridge. their is a small store on the island which does have quite a bit of groceries. Their is a Dollar Store off the Island which also has groceries. It was about 10-15 miles to an actual grocery store. Don't look for a Walmart/Target, closest one was Panama City, 45 miles away. It was a great place to get away, just need to be ready for the away part.

One of our favorite hang outs so it's the perfect place to camp as well. Excellent birding. Great during plover nesting season. No pesticides as you find in the privately owned campgrounds. Bugs, yes. That's nature. Better than pesticides. One of the best beaches in Florida. We've been to all 176 of Fl state parks and this one is still a regular return for us. Reserve early. They fill quickly. Lighthouse, birds, sand and surf. All protected. Absolutely wonderful! We camped at Dr. Julian G. Bruce St. George Island State Park in a Travel Trailer.

Beautiful park, excellent beach. Campsite easily accommodated our camper and tow vehicle, plus our flats boat and tow vehicle. Sand/gravel, fairly level, but with enough slope to rear for drainage (had rain every day). Enough foliage between sites to be private. Use bug spray...lots of mosquitos. Campground hosts have firewood and ice available. We camped at Dr. Julian G. Bruce St. George Island State Park in a Travel Trailer.

What can I say, I love St. George Island state Park. I was raised coming here since I was a little girl. This was the first time that I ever stayed at the campground over night and camped. It was very relaxing and enjoyable. A very nice getaway from everyday life. Bathrooms were nice. Showers could use a deep cleaning, but good water temperature and flow. Ice and firewood sold up until dark. Ice $3.00 and firewood $5.00. I thought that mosquitos didn't come out until night time, but holy mackerel, was I wrong! They are there to greet you when you pull in We camped at Dr. Julian G. Bruce St. George Island State Park in a Tent.

Overall Rating:

If you took this campground out of it's location, it would be a nice, clean campground with a slightly better than average rating. Put it back on St. George Island and it's a real winner, especially for a winter camping location. The Island is 1/4 to 1/2 mile wide, with the Gulf on one side and the Bay on the other. Lots of hiking trails. The State Park itself occupies the whole Eastern end of the Island, so you are well separated from any commercial development. There are a couple of small grocery stores out of the park for necessities, but the prices are high. There is fuel (gas and diesel) available on the Island. Great long, isolated beaches are available for the State Park campers and visitors on the Gulf side, about 1/4 mile from the CG. Sites are generally flat, but not necessarily level. Fairly good privacy between sites, and most sites are long enough for a long rig. My favorite sites are 46, 45, 42, 40, 38, 30-34, 50, 1-3, 55 (not in order of preference). Verizon coverage = 2/5, OTA TV=3 major nets, satellite reception is easy. Park staff was very accommodating and friendly. Saw a small (24") alligator in the pond next to the dump station! Good dump station with a threaded hose for black tank inlet. This is a great location for a winter trip, but I suspect it may be more of a challenge in hot weather because of the mosquitoes; also, there are no air conditioners in the bathrooms (hot, humid showers). Firewood and ice are sold at the campground in the afternoon - convenient. There are several seafood restaurants/bars in the developed area of the Island, prices run a little high. We camped at Dr. Julian G. Bruce St. George Island State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Tips for other Campers:

We ate at Harry-As, restaurant/bar just off the main road as you come in, beside the small grocery store. It's as close to a "locals" place as you can get on the Island. Pretty good, fresh seafood. Prices were fair.

This is our favorite park in Florida. Sites are well spaced among large pine trees. Easy walking access to the bay and to the gulf where there are miles if pristine sand beaches. Facilities were clean. Plenty of hot water for showers. Limited recycling. Lots of birds singing and calling in morning and at dusk. We camped at Dr. Julian G. Bike path from the park goes into "town". Doug's yellow seafood truck had excellent choices. We enjoyed the Blue Parrott restaurant. Our friends really liked Paddys for lunch. We love Up the Creek RW Bar in Apalachicola.

We normally stay the winter about an hour drive from this park and often came here on day trips. This time we checked reservations we were delighted to find one space. So we stayed one night on your way to our winter stop. This is a gorgeous spot. Sand beaches that run for miles are a reasonable walk away. There is a lovely long trail you can walk your dogs on. The sand dunes are spectacular, some as tall as a three story building. (You aren't allowed on them.) And there was an abundance of wildlife. The showers and other facilities were spotless and it was the first place that was entirely wheelchair friendly I have ever seen, including the ramp down to the beach. I wish we could have stayed on longer! The only downer is it is a wild place and there are lots of biting bugs so bring spray. We camped at Dr. Julian G. Bruce St. George Island State Park in a Travel Trailer.

Tips for other Campers:

The island is a tourist trap and the local stores charge a huge premium so stock up before you arrive. Also this place is very busy, immensely popular, and often fills up so a reservation is a must!

Check the mosquito situation first! A week after a storm there was still standing water and, while it is posted that the county sprays weekly, you could NOT step out of your camper without being swarmed by ravenous mosquitoes. Even with heavy bug spray, it was inhabitable. After checking in the attendant said, "Hope you have bug spray because the mosquitoes are bad". A total understatement--so much that they should have given the option to adjust the stay. We planned a few nights but barely made until the next day. Even walking the dog was a nightmare for us...and our dog. We camped at Dr. Julian G. Bruce St. George Island State Park in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

While the mosquitoes might be less in winter months, even in September the grounds were swarmed. Call first to check on the condition. And, I would encourage the State of Florida to put a warning on their website too.

We stayed here for a total of 11 nights. Our campsite was #42 and it was great. Semi- private site with shade. This park offers a beautiful get-a-way with great beach access without the crowds of more public beaches. The shower houses were clean, but hot! Bring plenty of bug spray. We HIGHLY recommend this campground if you are looking for a vacation without all the congestion of other campgrounds. We had water and electric but no sewer hookups. We camped at Dr. Julian G. Tips for other Campers:

Campground hosts sell ice for $3 a bag. That is a great price compared to other places on the island. Get your food before you come to the park on the mainland. It will be much cheaper. Next time we will buy our food in Dothan, AL.

We stayed for 10 days in this park and will return. The shower room was extremely clean, the playground well maintained, staff was helpful and the beach was awesome! The only negatives are b/c it's a state park there's no internet, cable TV (we brought our DISH) and cell phone coverage (we have AT&T) was spotty. For the most part we had the beach to ourselves most of the time; the water was clear, the surf mild enough for our 2 yr old grandson to enjoy, we saw dolphins and I found some cool shells. There's plenty of foliage between sites so it feels private. We did encounter some biting flies and mosquitos so if you have a screen room it'll be a godsend in the evenings. On Gulf barrier island near Eastpoint, FL. Isolated. No nearby gas or groceries. Campground hosts sell ice and firewood. Verizon cell signal was adequate. Water & electric only. No pets on beaches, but okay on hiking trails. Plenty of hiking and biking trails. Sites separated by vegetation offer some privacy. Sites are concrete for disabled or gravel or sand. Picnic tables and fire ring. Gate locked sunset to 8am. We camped at Dr. Julian G. Bruce St. George Island State Park in a Motorhome.

We were lucky to get any spot here at all even with 4 months in advance reservations. Let me SCREAM that you will have no cell service at all here let alone Wi-Fi! No phone calls in or out are going to happen. Our host in our section was a bit on the rude side but he was leaving in July. $3 for a bag of ice and $5 for firewood. Not too bad but you can get ice in town for cheaper and bigger bag too! It rained the entire time we were here so that was a bummer for us! Tons and tons water activities but not much else. Before you cross the bridge over check out the estuary it was awesome. Pets are welcomed at most restaurants they have water dishes everywhere! Roads in camping section are narrow but enough to get through. HUGE issue we had was that bathhouses are not air conditioned (lights on timers so some showers were in the dark a bit) once you are done you need another shower! Recycling sections were awesome! Beaches were awesome and not crowded multiple access points. Campground is at far end of the park, nearly 5 miles from the front gate. No sewers at sites; must use dump stations. Park was exceptionally clean too. There is a Piggly Wiggly Express on the island just after you cross the bridge. Get groceries before you cross the bridge! We ate the Peach Pit and the pizza place (sorry can't remember the name). It was pretty yummy. We are not really big beach people and probably would not go back to this location but highly recommend it to those who do lots of water craft activities. Gorgeous area! Water was always perfect and white sandy beaches as well. We camped at Dr. Julian G. Bruce St. George Island State Park in a Travel Trailer.
