We reserved through Reserve America. We have stayed here before. It is a great place to hike, take pictures, ride your bike. We stayed the last week in October. The campground had about 10% occupancy. The washers and dryers needed repair but a couple still worked. The new shower house is very nice and clean. Very good hot water with great pressure. We found the other campers pleasant and quiet at night. Mostly retired couples until the weekend when the campground was busier. We were not happy that the shower house closest to our site was closed until the weekend. Another camper told us they were low on staff and work campers to get the maintenance done. We camped at Highlands Hammock State Park in a Motorhome.

Sites are too close- no boundaries, ground cover. Bath house a distance from site. Closest you have to walk thru others site to get to. Roads are right for large RV. Outer loop is pull through and nicer sites. Bathhouse with laundry is nicest. Weekends are busier. Unable to sit outside due to smoke from other campfires. Have to run a/c - unable to keep windows open. We camped at Highlands Hammock State Park in a Motorhome.

Pros: Great bike trail & ranger-led tram tour. Beautiful oaks. Cool CCC museum. Cons: The campsites have no privacy, hook-ups are shared with neighbor so yours may be on wrong side. Narrow interior roads. No sewer. Only 30 amp. We camped at Highlands Hammock State Park in a Motorhome.

Camp sites are very, very close together. Didn't see any concrete pads, it appeared everything was dirt. Placement of electric & water in many sites was very bad. In our site (004, a back-in site), the fire ring was by the services making it unusable. There were two power outages during our three day visit. We camped at Highlands Hammock State Park in a Motorhome.

The campground is not crowded in summer & the tram was not working while we were there due to road damage. There was a camp host who was very friendly and we always find that to be a positive. Our site was a handicap, wide, nicely paved, pull through near the newer bathhouse. All 3 accessible sites are paved but have only 30 amp service. Picnic tables are very old & need work. The sites in our area were mostly dirt with lots of shade trees & significant tree roots. The sites are fairly level and our water/electric worked well. We received a few OTA TV stations. We also saw some deer and beautiful hawks. Dogs are not allowed on some trails due to alligator threats. As previously mentioned, one dumpsite with a difficult angle is a negative when lots of campers are checking out. We camped at Highlands Hammock State Park in a Travel Trailer.

Another great Florida State Park camping experience for our family. We really liked this campground. We stayed here for the Heartland Triathlon. The race start was a short drive from here. In the park there is great biking, hiking, and a kids playground. The sites are nice and fairly well shaded. Pulling in with a big rig is a little tight, but doable. Try to get a pull through site if available and there are some nicer ones with concrete pads as well. We camped at Highlands Hammock State Park in a Motorhome.

We had a pull-through site that backed up to pine/palmetto scrub, and we watched the sun rise from our rear dinette in the morning. We were in Site 121, which had nice shade from an oak tree (but also big roots). Our site was level but rather narrow with little or no privacy. We did have enough room to extend our awning, and it was long enough for our 27' trailer and pickup truck. Picnic table was in terrible shape, fortunately we didn't need it. There was a fire ring (also old, typical state park) but we only used it one night as a fire ban went into effect the next day. We mainly used the newer bath house, which was clean and well lit with decent water pressure. The park itself is large and great for bicycles, we didn't bring ours and I regretted it. Campers were well behaved and quiet after 10, as there were mostly families and older couples there. Our biggest complaint was the single dump station for well over 100 campsites. Sunday morning we got in line with quite a few campers behind us; we are now researching personal honey wagons. The trails are really lovely and easy to walk, and the CCC museum was informative. We camped at Highlands Hammock State Park in a Travel Trailer.

A previous review perfectly summed up this campground: The campground itself is average, but the park itself is excellent. While it's certainly not horrible, compared to other Florida state parks, Highland Hammock is not up to par. This is an older campground showing its age and in major need of updating. Very narrow, sometimes difficult to navigate roads in the campground -- also, there is no clear signage to help direct traffic flow down these small, one-lane roads. Our site was very sandy and both the picnic table and fire ring were so old as to be completely unusable. On the other hand, the park itself is great to explore. The Civilian Conservation Corps originally constructed the park in the 1930s and there is a small CCC museum on site that's worth a visit. Daily tram tours take visitors on a guided tour of the park. There are also hiking paths to explore. We camped at Highlands Hammock State Park in a Motorhome.

Campground is average, but the park is great. Most sites were packed in close, with minimal privacy. Weekends fill up, so hope for quiet neighbors. The new bathhouse near site 130 is new, bright, and clean with 3 sets of washers and dryers. The other bathhouses are clean, but older. The park has an 1 mile 1-way loop canopy road with many trailheads (almost all loops) and is excellent for driving, walking or biking. We camped at Highlands Hammock State Park in a Travel Trailer.

Tips for other Campers:

Our favorite hike was the Cypress Swamp Trail. We would walk this short loop boardwalk trail at least once a day (usually twice). The sky and cypress trees cast their reflections on the smooth, dark surface of the water and always left us with a deep feeling of peace.

Oldest campground in Florida. Campground is very popular, difficult to get a reservation however probably necessary. The sites are clean but close together, most are level although ours needed leveling. Plenty of trails for walking, biking and geocaching. Our stay was during several days of rain, limiting our ability to fully utilize the area. We camped at Highlands Hammock State Park in a Motorhome.

Lovely hikes. Great bike trails. Nice museum and picnic area. The Campground was very full and crowded. A lot of snowbirds this time of year. The sites were very close but as it thinned out enjoyable. But I don't think we will go again during snowbird and holiday season. We camped at Highlands Hammock State Park in a Motorhome.

Crowded state park. Sites are quite close together and the layout makes it difficult to walk around (between restrooms) without going through camp sites. There were some sites with pads but mostly it was grass and not very level. Utilities were located in odd places and no sewer connections.

Check in was easy and the rangers we interacted with were pleasant. The camp hosts kept the place neat & tidy.

You camp here for the park, not the campground. This is a park where it is nice to have a bike. There is a bike path along the loop road & bike racks at the trail heads. Most trails are approx 1/2 mile long. If you only have time for a couple of trails, I recommend the ones with boardwalks like the Cypress Swamp & Fern.

All sites are not created equal and it is hard to choose from the photos on ReserveAmerica. As others have said, there is no privacy between sites. Most are partially shaded under pines, but there are some sites in full sun.

There is a new modern shower house across from sites 129-130. The sites across from this bathhouse are large, paved, ADA accessible but not limited to handicapped, but most of the RV parking area is in full sun. Many sites are pull thru, as you have to watch for all the trees. Some hookups are right next to site, others are a distance - check the notes on ReserveAmerica before booking.

This park is best in the dry cooler seasons. There were no bugs in the campground, but deer flies on the Wild Orange Grove trail where it was damp. I can see where in rainy season, there may be mosquitoes & flies. We camped at Highlands Hammock State Park in a Motorhome.

We pulled into HH on a Saturday afternoon and were immediately greeted by a fully booked campground - every single one of the 143 spots was taken, and the roads were swarming with people. We slowly crawled to our site (#107), hooked up, and hunkered down for the night. All around us, into the wee hours, people were laughing and yelling, and I was prepared for a rough 12 nights ahead.

The next morning, we watched in amazement as 90% of the campground packed up and cleared out by 1pm. We saw this occur again the next weekend, where the park filled to capacity on Friday night and cleared out by Sunday midday. We've been to other SPs and have never seen this pattern before. On Fri/Sat nights, be warned - it gets loud and rowdy. People were blasting dance music, kids were running up and down the roads, people were shouting across sites to each other. Invest in earplugs if you're a light sleeper. If you prefer a tranquil scene, reserve Sunday-Thursday, as you'll have your pick of sites and a much more relaxed crowd.

Observations on the campground:

- The grounds are open and the sites are close (especially when people spread out with their stuff) and do not have extensive foliage division between spots. You'll get to know your neighbors very well :)

- Laundry is $1/load to wash (35 minutes) and between $0.75-$1/load to dry (45 minutes), depending on the machine. Used them twice, found them to work very well.

Observations on the park:

- Down the road from the campground is a loop that has a fitness track and a number of interconnected trails. Do these if you can, they're varied and not too long. Also, bring bug spray - It's a swamp out there!

- They seem to have live music once a month, mid-month during the summer - there may be more frequent shows during peak season.

Overall, we might come here again for a night or two if we were in the area, but would not go out of our way to stop here (definitely not on the weekends anyhow!!) We camped at Highlands Hammock State Park in a Motorhome.

The campground is close to the main strip on US 27, a 10-15 min drive from any store or restaurant you might need.

If you can only do one trail, do the Cypress Swamp trail - it's along a boardwalk and is simply amazing.
