I hiked from Key Largo to Key West. I arrived just at dark. I entered the park by walking under the nearby highway bridge. The park looks like a big construction zone. They have repaired all the hurricane damage and are working on greatly expanding the facility. I attempted to call the KOA but got no answer. I set up my tent in the freshly mowed grass near the edge of the park. Little Key deer came out and grazed after dark. Very quiet except the noise from the highway. We camped at Sugarloaf Key / Key West KOA (Closed temporarily) in a Tent.

You would have to see it to believe it, the sites were so close that we could not even put our awning out, the people on one side let theirs out and hit the side of our coach and had to retract it some, on the other side we could not let ours out. The people on the drivers side of our coach had a tv outside and had it blasting as loud as it would go day and night, Office was closed at night so we could not get anything done about the noise, we cancelled our stay after calling another park on Key West and it was 1/3 the price of this one and 100 times better, nicer, roomer and I will never again go to this KOA! We camped at Sugarloaf Key / Key West KOA (Closed temporarily) in a Motorhome.

Date of Stay: April, 2017 - $66.00
Overall Rating:

The office building is under construction, so the sign at the entrance needs to be temporarily corrected. The "blue awning" is not currently the mark of the office. The staff are very friendly and helpful. The RV sites are completely unshaded, which is a drawback. The pool, pool area and pool bar are quite attractive and open generous hours, although during the day the pool is, naturally, dominated by loud children. The beach areas are minimal and not very attractive. The "restaurant" is a counter with a few snacks that aren't very good. The grounds are quite large with the resulting disadvantage that both the bathhouse and the dog park are quite far from the RV site area. A great plus for us is that we had our car in tow, and Key West was only a half hour away. We camped at Sugarloaf Key / Key West KOA (Closed temporarily) in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

As noted above, go to Key West. Particularly worth visiting are the Tennessee Williams exhibit, the Ernest Hemingway house, and the Truman southern White House.

Nice enough place - very busy & kinda loud. Spaces in our area are tight & it takes a village of people to get you in so you don't hit another rig. People don't care about quiet time. Its open to the public - so anyone can drive in at any time - so a certain lack of security. Lots of staff - nice enough & helpful with restaurant recommendations. Great location to do the variety of things the Keys offer. We camped at Sugarloaf Key / Key West KOA (Closed temporarily) in a Travel Trailer.

Far too expensive for the size of the site. Only had power and water but it was close to the bus service to key west. I do not have a toad. The site is small. We camped at Sugarloaf Key / Key West KOA (Closed temporarily) in a Motorhome.

Basically a big gravel lot with pedestals and some trees. No pull-through sites. Some sites are double wide. All sites are full hookup/30/50 but utilities are at rear of sites. Better bring extra "stinky tubes" and 1 long or multiple water hoses. Nice pool with a hot tub. Well-stocked store with food, hardware, and trinkets. An open air pub with pizza and wings as their restaurant is only open during the winter, tourist season. Staff seems friendly enough. Laundry is $1.75 wash, $1.00 dry. Propane available at $7.29 per gallon. Showers/bathrooms updated and clean. They have Wi-Fi repeaters all over the place but connecting to the Internet is a challenge. There are primitive tent sites in a treed, shady area. No weekly or monthly rates, only Value Kard (KOA membership) discounts. We camped at Sugarloaf Key / Key West KOA (Closed temporarily) in a Fifth Wheel.

This was our first trip to this campground. We chose a waterfront site with full hook-up. The site was excellent and we shared it with several iguanas. The dog park was clean and there was no "stuff" left behind from previous dogs. The staff were friendly and helpful supplying information about Key West. We will be bringing our boat the next trip and there is separate boat parking close to campsites; launching is free if you are staying there. We will definitely come again! Large parking lot of crushed shells. Forget your GPS as it did not work on either RV or Tow. Good WiFi and Cable. Very small beach area, there picture does not really show it. There are other things like a Tiki bar and small marina. We will pay a little more to get a better place. If you are 40 feet or over you may be sticking out into the street. Great location. Own beach, pub and pool. Mooring and rentals. Sites are back-in but ours was wide, so plenty of room. They allowed us to move when we explained my mother's mobility issues and we were very near the beach/pub/pool. Genuinely one of the best KOAs. This KOA is no exception. You are a sardine in a tin can. They pack them in tight to maximize the number of sites that they can rent. The grounds are kept clean and the ever present staff on golf carts are very friendly and helpful.

What is not so nice about this park is that you are essentially parking your RV on a huge parking lot covered with crushed Limestone (Limestone = very dusty!). If it were not for the power pedestals, you would not know where your site begins and ends.

Except, for and along the park perimeter, there are hardly any trees. Therefore, no shade.

We stayed here in a 45ft motorhome on a site with 50A service near to the entrance. This was good because you definitely want to stay far away from the opposite end near the marina and the on-site pub, sites 118 / 117 / 116 etc. as well as the opposite row sites 119 / 120 / 121 etc. Reason being, those sites are pretty much adjacent to the on-site sewage plant and, to put it mildly, the area smells like you know what.

I pity the people who rent one of the KOA Rental "Kabins" consisting of actual Airstream trailers. The trailers look very nice and well kept, but they are immediately across from the sewage plant.

This KOA has an on-site pub with live band entertainment. We spent one Wednesday evening in the pub, having a couple of beers, listening to the music and watching the people.

However, given the location of this KOA being quite a distance from Key West (about a 15-20 minutes drive), I would look for alternatives. One of them is on Stock Island, which is right outside KW about 4-5 miles away. We camped at Sugarloaf Key / Key West KOA (Closed temporarily) in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

Whether it is this KOA or any other campground in the Florida Keys, you must book your stay as early as possible. Preferably, several months ahead of time. Especially, during the winter when you should book 6 months ahead of your planned stay or even sooner.

Absolute and total "rip off". Sites are literally inches apart, we could not even let our awning out or it would hit the coach next to us. The ones on our drivers side were so close their TV bothered us constantly and their awning was so close I had to tell them to move it in or it would scrape our coach when the wind blew. For what they charge it should not be considered a KOA because it is a rip off, not worth $35.00 a night! They charged us $115.00 a night and we got a $10.00 KOA Members discount and still it was $105.00 a night plus taxes. I was fed up the second day and went in and told them that we had to leave and cancelled our week there and we went to another RV park in Key West for half the price of Sugarloaf KOA and found big roomy sites. I would never book another stay at this KOA! There was not even a picnic table, but then there was no room to have one either! You cannot get into your site without their guy helping you because you have to pull in and out 20 times or more moving inches at a time to avoid hitting another coach. We camped at Sugarloaf Key / Key West KOA (Closed temporarily) in a Motorhome.

Date of Stay: August, 2014 - $110.00
Overall Rating:

We stayed here in Late January of 2015. Staff is excellent and very friendly. Access for big rigs is about as unfriendly as can be. There are many big rigs here but nothing about the place makes it easy to maneuver. So much so the staff are adamant and insist on helping to get you parked. The sites are so tight they want to ensure there are no mistakes backing into the site. Visually the place is clean and well kept. There is forever traffic and staff golf carts running around. They go by so frequently the trash policy is to simply put it out front between dawn and dusk and it is typically picked up in a few minutes which was nice. Pool and spa are beautiful and excellent. Pool was wonderfully heated. WIFI is evident everywhere but not enough bandwidth for much more that emails. Cable is limited to a handful of channels and over the air TV Reception is non existent. Both Sprint and Verizon cell phone service were fair. We came here because like nearly everyone else it is 20 min from Key West. There is an Open Air Pub and a Marina and a beach and a cafe all of which lend a nice convenience to the stay. The pub had live music on Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays from 7PM till 10PM, which is heard pretty much throughout the park however the 10PM shutdown is reasonable to us. The most disagreeable thing to us was the tightness of the sites. It is not like camping but more like a small city. After a couple weeks I could not wait to get out of the claustrophobic site. Also all sewer connections are at the very back of the site. Bring a long hose to reach the back of your unit plus a few feet. This RV Park, like most of the others in the area knows that it is all about location during the winter snowbird months and like the other RV parks in the area the prices are high and cramming sites in helps them do what they are in the business of doing....make money. We would stay here again, but only after exhausting most other parks in the area, which is how we ended up here this time. Finally, Google Maps insists on bringing up an erroneous address for this place which leads you wrong if using the Google maps address. The CORRECT address is: 251 State Road 939 Sugarloaf Key, FL 33042. We camped at Sugarloaf Key / Key West KOA (Closed temporarily) in a Motorhome.

We find this KOA to be run by a good managerial staff. There were people in golf carts buzzing around everywhere. Previous person wrote that security is bad. We see it as KOA staff eyes seemed to be available if needed. We were camped across from the pub. I thought it might be loud/bothersome there, it wasn't though. We found this KOA to be clean/well run/up to date/ (were doing bathroom renovations at main bathhouse) and just seemed to capture the 'laidback nature' of the Keys.
